    FPGA based remote code integrity verification of programs in distributed embedded systems

    The explosive growth of networked embedded systems has made ubiquitous and pervasive computing a reality. However, there are still a number of new challenges to its widespread adoption that include scalability, availability, and, especially, security of software. Among the different challenges in software security, the problem of remote-code integrity verification is still waiting for efficient solutions. This paper proposes the use of reconfigurable computing to build a consistent architecture for generation of attestations (proofs) of code integrity for an executing program as well as to deliver them to the designated verification entity. Remote dynamic update of reconfigurable devices is also exploited to increase the complexity of mounting attacks in a real-word environment. The proposed solution perfectly fits embedded devices that are nowadays commonly equipped with reconfigurable hardware components that are exploited to solve different computational problems

    High-speed, in-band performance measurement instrumentation for next generation IP networks

    Facilitating always-on instrumentation of Internet traffic for the purposes of performance measurement is crucial in order to enable accountability of resource usage and automated network control, management and optimisation. This has proven infeasible to date due to the lack of native measurement mechanisms that can form an integral part of the network‟s main forwarding operation. However, Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6) specification enables the efficient encoding and processing of optional per-packet information as a native part of the network layer, and this constitutes a strong reason for IPv6 to be adopted as the ubiquitous next generation Internet transport. In this paper we present a very high-speed hardware implementation of in-line measurement, a truly native traffic instrumentation mechanism for the next generation Internet, which facilitates performance measurement of the actual data-carrying traffic at small timescales between two points in the network. This system is designed to operate as part of the routers' fast path and to incur an absolutely minimal impact on the network operation even while instrumenting traffic between the edges of very high capacity links. Our results show that the implementation can be easily accommodated by current FPGA technology, and real Internet traffic traces verify that the overhead incurred by instrumenting every packet over a 10 Gb/s operational backbone link carrying a typical workload is indeed negligible

Complete lexical distribution of grammatical knowledge is achieved building upon the head-oriented notions of valency and dependency, while inheritance mechanisms are used to capture lexical generalizations. The underlying concurrent computation model relies upon the actor paradigm.     Characterization of robotics parallel algorithms and mapping onto a reconfigurable SIMD machine

    The kinematics, dynamics, Jacobian, and their corresponding inverse computations are six essential problems in the control of robot manipulators. Efficient parallel algorithms for these computations are discussed and analyzed. Their characteristics are identified and a scheme on the mapping of these algorithms to a reconfigurable parallel architecture is presented. Based on the characteristics including type of parallelism, degree of parallelism, uniformity of the operations, fundamental operations, data dependencies, and communication requirement, it is shown that most of the algorithms for robotic computations possess highly regular properties and some common structures, especially the linear recursive structure. Moreover, they are well-suited to be implemented on a single-instruction-stream multiple-data-stream (SIMD) computer with reconfigurable interconnection network. The model of a reconfigurable dual network SIMD machine with internal direct feedback is introduced. A systematic procedure internal direct feedback is introduced. A new scheduling problem for SIMD machines is investigated and a heuristic algorithm, called neighborhood scheduling, that reorders the processing sequence of subtasks to reduce the communication time is described.     Implementation and Evaluation of an NoC Architecture for FPGAs

    The Networks-on-Chip (NoC) approach for designing Systems-on-Chip (SoC) is currently emerging as an advanced concept for overcoming the scalability and efficiency problems of traditional bus-based systems. A great deal of theoretical research has been done in this area that provides good insight and shows promising results. There is a great need for research in hardware implementation of NoC-based systems to determine the feasibility of implementing various topologies and protocols, and also to accurately determine what design tradeoffs are involved in NoC implementation. This thesis addresses the challenges of implementing an NoC-based system on FPGAs for running real benchmark applications. The NoC used a mesh topology and circuit-switched communication protocol. An experimental framework was developed that allowed implementation of NoC-based system from a high level specification, using the Celoxica Handel-C hardware description language. Two test applications: charged couple device (CCD) and JPEG were developed in Handel-C to be used as our benchmark applications. Both benchmarks are computational expensive and require large quantities of data transfer that will test the NoC system. Implementation results show that the NoC-based system gives superior area utilization and speed performance compared to the bus-based system, running the same benchmarks

    Achieving High Speed CFD simulations: Optimization, Parallelization, and FPGA Acceleration for the unstructured DLR TAU Code

    Today, large scale parallel simulations are fundamental tools to handle complex problems. The number of processors in current computation platforms has been recently increased and therefore it is necessary to optimize the application performance and to enhance the scalability of massively-parallel systems. In addition, new heterogeneous architectures, combining conventional processors with specific hardware, like FPGAs, to accelerate the most time consuming functions are considered as a strong alternative to boost the performance. In this paper, the performance of the DLR TAU code is analyzed and optimized. The improvement of the code efficiency is addressed through three key activities: Optimization, parallelization and hardware acceleration. At first, a profiling analysis of the most time-consuming processes of the Reynolds Averaged Navier Stokes flow solver on a three-dimensional unstructured mesh is performed. Then, a study of the code scalability with new partitioning algorithms are tested to show the most suitable partitioning algorithms for the selected applications. Finally, a feasibility study on the application of FPGAs and GPUs for the hardware acceleration of CFD simulations is presented

    Design, Application and Evaluation of a Multi Agent System in the Logistics Domain

    The increasing demand for flexibility of automated production systems also affects the automated material flow systems (aMFS) they contain and demands reconfigurable systems. However, the centralized control concept usually applied in aMFS hinders an easy adaptation, as the entire control software has to be re-tested, when manually changing sub-parts of the control. As adaption and subsequent testing are a time-consuming task, concepts for splitting the control from one centralized to multiple, decentralized control nodes are required. Therefore, this paper presents a holistic agent-based control concept for aMFS, whereby the system is divided into so-called automated material flow modules (aMFM), each being controlled by a dedicated module agent. The concept allows the reconfiguration of aMFS, consisting of heterogeneous, stationary aMFM, during runtime. Furthermore, it includes aspects such as uniform agent knowledge bases through metamodel-based development, a communication ontology considering different information types and properties, strategic route optimization in decentralized control architecture and a visualization concept to make decisions of the module agents comprehensible to operators and maintenance staff.     The Case for Reconfigurable Components with Logic Scrubbing: Regular Hygiene Keeps Logic FIT (low)

    As we approach atomic-scale logic, we must accommodate an increased rate of manufacturing defects, transient upsets, and in-field persistent failures. High defect rates demand reconfiguration to avoid defective components, and transient upsets demand online error detection to catch failures. Combining these techniques we can detect in-field persistent failures when they occur and reconfigure around them. However, since failures may be logically masked for long periods of time, persistent failures may accumulate silently; this integration of errors over time means the effective failure rate for persistent errors can exceed transient upset rates. As a result, logic scrubbing is necessary to prevent the silent accumulation of an undetectable number of persistent errors. We provide simple analysis to illustrate quantitatively how this phenomena can be a concern
