    An algebraic characterization of some principal regulated rational cones

    AbstractThe aim of this paper is to deal with formal power series over a commutative semiring A. Generalizing Wechler's pushdown automata and pushdown transition matrices yields a characterization of the A-semi-algebraic power series in terms of acceptance by pushdown automata. Principal regulated rational cones generated by cone generators of a certain form are characterized by algebraic systems given in certain matrix form. This yields a characterization of some principal full semi-AFL's in terms of context-free grammars. As an application of the theory, the principal regulated rational cone of one-counter “languages” is considered

    An infinite word is S-automatic if, for all n>=0, its (n + 1)st letter is the output of a deterministic automaton fed with the representation of n in the considered numeration system S. In this extended abstract, we consider an analogous definition in a multidimensional setting and present the connection to the shape-symmetric infinite words introduced by Arnaud Maes. More precisely, for d>=2, we state that a multidimensional infinite word x : N^d \to \Sigma over a finite alphabet \Sigma is S-automatic for some abstract numeration system S built on a regular language containing the empty word if and only if x is the image by a coding of a shape-symmetric infinite word

    The Simplest Non-Regular Deterministic Context-Free Language

    We introduce a new notion of ?-simple problems for a class ? of decision problems (i.e. languages), w.r.t. a particular reduction. A problem is ?-simple if it can be reduced to each problem in ?. This can be viewed as a conceptual counterpart to ?-hard problems to which all problems in ? reduce. Our concrete example is the class of non-regular deterministic context-free languages (DCFL\u27), with a truth-table reduction by Mealy machines. The main technical result is a proof that the DCFL\u27 language L_# = {0^n1^n ? n ? 1} is DCFL\u27-simple, and can be thus viewed as one of the simplest languages in the class DCFL\u27, in a precise sense. The notion of DCFL\u27-simple languages is nontrivial: e.g., the language L_R = {wcw^R? w ? {a,b}^*} is not DCFL\u27-simple. By describing an application in the area of neural networks (elaborated in another paper), we demonstrate that ?-simple problems under suitable reductions can provide a tool for expanding the lower-bound results known for single problems to the whole classes of problems

    The main goal is to prepare the space station technical and managerial structure for likely changes in the creation, capture, transfer, and utilization of knowledge. By anticipating advances, the design of Space Station Project (SSP) information systems can be tailored to facilitate a progression of increasingly sophisticated strategies as the space station evolves. Future generations of advanced information systems will use increases in power to deliver environmentally meaningful, contextually targeted, interconnected data (knowledge). The concept of a Knowledge Base Management System is emerging when the problem is focused on how information systems can perform such a conversion of raw data. Such a system would include traditional management functions for large space databases. Added artificial intelligence features might encompass co-existing knowledge representation schemes; effective control structures for deductive, plausible, and inductive reasoning; means for knowledge acquisition, refinement, and validation; explanation facilities; and dynamic human intervention. The major areas covered include: alternative knowledge representation approaches; advanced user interface capabilities; computer-supported cooperative work; the evolution of information system hardware; standardization, compatibility, and connectivity; and organizational impacts of information intensive environments

    Is Impredicativity Implicitly Implicit?

    Of all the threats to the consistency of a type system, such as side effects and recursion, impredicativity is arguably the least understood. In this paper, we try to investigate it using a kind of blackbox reverse-engineering approach to map the landscape. We look at it with a particular focus on its interaction with the notion of implicit arguments, also known as erasable arguments. More specifically, we revisit several famous type systems believed to be consistent and which do include some form of impredicativity, and show that they can be refined to equivalent systems where impredicative quantification can be marked as erasable, in a stricter sense than the kind of proof irrelevance notion used for example for Prop terms in systems like Coq. We hope these observations will lead to a better understanding of why and when impredicativity can be sound. As a first step in this direction, we discuss how these results suggest some extensions of existing systems where constraining impredicativity to erasable quantifications might help preserve consistency
