    A DMAIC integrated fuzzy FMEA model: A case study in the automotive industry

    The growing competitiveness in the automotive industry and the strict standards to which it is subject, require high quality standards. For this, quality tools such as the failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA) are applied to quantify the risk of potential failure modes. However, for qualitative defects with subjectivity and associated uncertainty, and the lack of specialized technicians, it revealed the inefficiency of the visual inspection process, as well as the limitations of the FMEA that is applied to it. The fuzzy set theory allows dealing with the uncertainty and subjectivity of linguistic terms and, together with the expert systems, allows modeling of the knowledge involved in tasks that require human expertise. In response to the limitations of FMEA, a fuzzy FMEA system was proposed. Integrated in the design, measure, analyze, improve and control (DMAIC) cycle, the proposed system allows the representation of expert knowledge and improves the analysis of subjective failures, hardly detected by visual inspection, compared to FMEA. The fuzzy FMEA system was tested in a real case study at an industrial manufacturing unit. The identified potential failure modes were analyzed and a fuzzy risk priority number (RPN) resulted, which was compared with the classic RPN. The main results revealed several differences between both. The main differences between fuzzy FMEA and classical FMEA come from the non-linear relationship between the variables and in the attribution of an RPN classification that assigns linguistic terms to the results, thus allowing a strengthening of the decision-making regarding the mitigation actions of the most “important” failure modes.publishersversionpublishe

    Alternative sweetener from curculigo fruits

    This study gives an overview on the advantages of Curculigo Latifolia as an alternative sweetener and a health product. The purpose of this research is to provide another option to the people who suffer from diabetes. In this research, Curculigo Latifolia was chosen, due to its unique properties and widely known species in Malaysia. In order to obtain the sweet protein from the fruit, it must go through a couple of procedures. First we harvested the fruits from the Curculigo trees that grow wildly in the garden. Next, the Curculigo fruits were dried in the oven at 50 0C for 3 days. Finally, the dried fruits were blended in order to get a fine powder. Curculin is a sweet protein with a taste-modifying activity of converting sourness to sweetness. The curculin content from the sample shown are directly proportional to the mass of the Curculigo fine powder. While the FTIR result shows that the sample spectrum at peak 1634 cm–1 contains secondary amines. At peak 3307 cm–1 contains alkynes

    Dynamic Risk Analysis of Construction Delays Using Fuzzy-Failure Mode Effects Analysis

    Considering the tremendous losses in the worldwide economy caused by construction delays, it is essential to invest in minimizing the risks of delays. In order to make this happen, two measures should be taken: 1) The roots and fundamental causes of delay should be identified and strategies to mitigate their risks be developed (General remedy). 2) The most significant potential causes of delay in each project should be identified and these causes should be given priority to control (Project-Specific Remedy). The current research invests in both of the measures. To provide the general remedy, causes of delay in the construction industry of the United States is investigated through a national survey responded by the 224 construction experts with an average experience of over 27 years. The results of this study rank the criticality of the thirty main causes of construction delay in the U.S construction industry. The focus of the research is on the project-specific remedy. The research aims at designing a tool, which can prioritize different causes based on their criticality. This is crucial as there is often a large number of potential causes and investing in prevention of all of them is not practical. The designed tool is capable of identifying the most critical causes by assessing its status of the potential causes of delay in three elements of criticality which are: 1) The likelihood of occurrence of the cause, 2) the severity of the cause in creating delays (in case it happens), and 3) the resolvability or likelihood of handling the potential cause before it creates a delay, in case it happens. The three elements of assessment are inserted in a designed tool in Matlab®, which uses a fuzzy logic system to generate a “risk priority number’. This number is a representative of the riskiness of each potential cause. The next contribution of the research is a model that is capable of predicting the percentage of delay based on the “fuzzy risk priority number”. This model uses the output of the aforementioned fuzzy inference system to make a prediction about the percentage of delay. The model was tested by comparing its predictions with actual data (the delay that has actually happened) and has been able to predict the amount of delay with an error of less than 20%

    Optimization of maintenance performance for offshore production facilities

    Master's thesis in Offshore technologyNew technologies are becoming advanced and complex for offshore production facilities. However this advancement and complexity in technology creates a more complicated and time consuming forensic processes for finding causes of failure, or diagnostic processes to identify events that reduce performance. As a result, micro-sensors, efficient signaling and communication technologies for collecting data efficiently, advanced software tools (such as fuzzy logic, neural networks, and simulation based optimization) have been developed, in parallel, to manage such complex assets. Given the nature and scale of ongoing changes on complexities, there are emerging concerns that increasing complexities, ill-defined interfaces, unforeseen events can easily lead to serious performance failures and major risks. To avoid such undesirable circumstances, „just-in-time‟ measures of performance to ensure fully functional is absolutely necessary. The increasing trend in complexity creates a motivation to develop an integrated maintenance management framework to get real-time information to solve problems quickly and hence to increase functional performance (help the asset to perform its required function effectively and efficiently while safeguarding life and the environment). Establishing “just-in-time” maintenance and repairs based on true machine condition maximizes critical asset useful life and eliminates premature replacement of functional components. This thesis focuses on developing an integrated maintenance management framework to establish „just-in-time‟ maintenance and to ensure continuous improvements based on maintenance domain experts as well as operational and historic data. To do this, true degradation of components must be identified. True level of degradation often cannot be inferred by the mere trending of condition indicator‟s level (CBM), because condition indicator levels are modulated under the influence of the diverse operating context. Besides, the maintenance domain expert does not have a precise knowledge about the correlation of the diverse operating context and level of degradation for a given level of condition indicator on specific equipment. Efforts have been made in here to identify the true degradation pattern of a component by analyzing these vagueness and imprecise knowledge.     An advanced risk analysis approach for container port safety evaluation

    Risk analysis in seaports plays an increasingly important role in ensuring port operation reliability, maritime transportation safety and supply chain distribution resilience. However, the task is not straightforward given the challenges, including that port safety is affected by multiple factors related to design, installation, operation and maintenance and that traditional risk assessment methods such as quantitative risk analysis cannot sufficiently address uncertainty in failure data. This paper develops an advanced Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (FMEA) approach through incorporating Fuzzy Rule-Based Bayesian Networks (FRBN) to evaluate the criticality of the hazardous events (HEs) in a container terminal. The rational use of the Degrees of Belief (DoB) in a fuzzy rule base (FRB) facilitates the implementation of the new method in Container Terminal Risk Evaluation (CTRE) in practice. Compared to conventional FMEA methods, the new approach integrates FRB and BN in a complementary manner, in which the former provides a realistic and flexible way to describe input failure information while the latter allows easy updating of risk estimation results and facilitates real-time safety evaluation and dynamic risk-based decision support in container terminals. The proposed approach can also be tailored for wider application in other engineering and management systems, especially when instant risk ranking is required by the stakeholders to measure, predict and improve their system safety and reliability performance

    Continuous Improvement Through Knowledge-Guided Analysis in Experience Feedback

    Continuous improvement in industrial processes is increasingly a key element of competitiveness for industrial systems. The management of experience feedback in this framework is designed to build, analyze and facilitate the knowledge sharing among problem solving practitioners of an organization in order to improve processes and products achievement. During Problem Solving Processes, the intellectual investment of experts is often considerable and the opportunities for expert knowledge exploitation are numerous: decision making, problem solving under uncertainty, and expert configuration. In this paper, our contribution relates to the structuring of a cognitive experience feedback framework, which allows a flexible exploitation of expert knowledge during Problem Solving Processes and a reuse such collected experience. To that purpose, the proposed approach uses the general principles of root cause analysis for identifying the root causes of problems or events, the conceptual graphs formalism for the semantic conceptualization of the domain vocabulary and the Transferable Belief Model for the fusion of information from different sources. The underlying formal reasoning mechanisms (logic-based semantics) in conceptual graphs enable intelligent information retrieval for the effective exploitation of lessons learned from past projects.     Ingenious Method for Conducive Handoff Appliance in Cognitive Radio Networks

    Wireless communications deployed in the current epoch claims ceaseless connection among its users thereby leading to the investigation of Cognitive Radio Networks (CRN) which enables to make use of unallocated spectrum optimally and provides uninterrupted connection. Establishing interminable connectivity during the handoff process in spectrum mobility of CRN is a challenging task. This paper elucidates the optimization of handoff process carried out in CRN by incorporating an intelligent method. This includes fuzzy logic wherein the handoff parameters are processed thereby indicating the need of handoff. The proffered method also comprises of a part of genetic algorithm which yields fitness value for reducing the handoff occurrences and enhancing the overall performance of the system is promoted using cuckoo search which decides the mobile node from which the handoff process has to initiate based on the priority generated. This technique ensures that decision is taken ahead of link failure rather than range failure which are the key point in comparison to the existing system. Results obtained through the simulation are satisfactory in terms of delay, throughput, number of failed handoff and handoffs performed in comparison to the existing fuzzy based handoff process in CRN
