The essence of P2P: A reference architecture for overlay networks
The success of the P2P idea has created a huge diversity
of approaches, among which overlay networks, for example,
Gnutella, Kazaa, Chord, Pastry, Tapestry, P-Grid, or DKS,
have received specific attention from both developers and
researchers. A wide variety of algorithms, data structures,
and architectures have been proposed. The terminologies
and abstractions used, however, have become quite inconsistent since the P2P paradigm has attracted people from many different communities, e.g., networking, databases, distributed systems, graph theory, complexity theory, biology, etc. In this paper we propose a reference model for overlay networks which is capable of modeling different approaches in this domain in a generic manner. It is intended to allow researchers and users to assess the properties of concrete systems, to establish a common vocabulary for scientific discussion, to facilitate the qualitative comparison of the systems, and to serve as the basis for defining a standardized API to make overlay networks interoperable
Predicting link directions via a recursive subgraph-based ranking
Link directions are essential to the functionality of networks and their
prediction is helpful towards a better knowledge of directed networks from
incomplete real-world data. We study the problem of predicting the directions
of some links by using the existence and directions of the rest of links. We
propose a solution by first ranking nodes in a specific order and then
predicting each link as stemming from a lower-ranked node towards a
higher-ranked one. The proposed ranking method works recursively by utilizing
local indicators on multiple scales, each corresponding to a subgraph extracted
from the original network. Experiments on real networks show that the
directions of a substantial fraction of links can be correctly recovered by our
method, which outperforms either purely local or global methods.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures; revised arguments for methods section; figures

Content-access QoS in peer-to-peer networks using a fast MDS erasure code
This paper describes an enhancement of content access Quality of Service in peer to peer (P2P) networks. The main idea is to use an erasure code to distribute the information over the peers. This distribution increases the usersâ choice on disseminated encoded data and therefore statistically enhances the overall throughput of the transfer. A performance evaluation based on an original model using the results of a measurement campaign of sequential and parallel downloads in a real P2P network over Internet is presented. Based on a bandwidth distribution, statistical content-access QoS are guaranteed in function of both the content replication level in the network and the file dissemination strategies. A simple application in the context of media streaming is proposed. Finally, the constraints on the erasure code related to the proposed system are analysed and a new fast MDS erasure code is proposed, implemented and evaluated
Reducing Routing Overhead in Random Walk Protocol under MP2P Network
Due to network dynamics in self-organizing networks the resource discovery effort increases. To discover objects in unstructured peer-to-peer network, peers rely on traditional methods like flooding, random walk and probabilistic forwarding methods. With inadequate knowledge of paths, the peers have to flood the query message which creates incredible network traffic and overhead. Many of the previous works based on random walk were done in wired network. In this context random walk was better than flooding. But under MANETs random walk approach behaved differently increasing the overhead, due to frequent link failures incurred by mobility. Decentralized applications based on peer-to-peer computing are best candidates to run over such dynamic network. Issues of P2P service discovery in wired networks have been well addressed in several earlier works. This article evaluates the performance of random walk based resource discovery protocol over P2P Mobile Adhoc Network (MP2P) and suggests an improved scheme to suit MANET. Our version reduces the network overhead, lowers the battery power consumption, minimizes the query delay while providing equally good success rate. The protocol is validated through extensive NS-2 simulations. It is clear from the results that our proposed scheme is an alternative to the existing ones for such highly dynamic mobile network scenario
