    Improving data driven decision making through integration of environmental sensing technologies

    Coastal and estuarine zones contain vital and increasingly exploited resources. Traditional uses in these areas (transport, fishing, tourism) now sit alongside more recent activities (mineral extraction, wind farms). However, protecting the resource base upon which these marine-related economic and social activities depend requires access to reliable and timely data. This requires both acquisition of background (baseline) data and monitoring impacts of resource exploitation on aquatic processes and the environment. Management decisions must be based on analysis of collected data to reduce negative impacts while supporting resource-efficient, environmentally sustainable uses. Multi-modal sensing and data fusion offer attractive possibilities for providing such data in a resource efficient and robust manner. In this paper, we report the results of integrating multiple sensing technologies, including autonomous multi-parameter aquatic sensors with visual sensing systems. By focussing on salinity measurements, water level and freshwater influx into an estuarine system; we demonstrate the potential of modelling and data mining techniques in allowing deployment of fewer sensors, with greater network robustness. Using the estuary of the River Liffey in Dublin, Ireland, as an example, we present the outputs and benefits resulting from fusion of multi-modal sensing technologies to predict and understand freshwater input into estuarine systems and discuss the potential of multi-modal datasets for informed management decisions

    Selected Topics in Bayesian Image/Video Processing

    In this dissertation, three problems in image deblurring, inpainting and virtual content insertion are solved in a Bayesian framework.;Camera shake, motion or defocus during exposure leads to image blur. Single image deblurring has achieved remarkable results by solving a MAP problem, but there is no perfect solution due to inaccurate image prior and estimator. In the first part, a new non-blind deconvolution algorithm is proposed. The image prior is represented by a Gaussian Scale Mixture(GSM) model, which is estimated from non-blurry images as training data. Our experimental results on a total twelve natural images have shown that more details are restored than previous deblurring algorithms.;In augmented reality, it is a challenging problem to insert virtual content in video streams by blending it with spatial and temporal information. A generic virtual content insertion (VCI) system is introduced in the second part. To the best of my knowledge, it is the first successful system to insert content on the building facades from street view video streams. Without knowing camera positions, the geometry model of a building facade is established by using a detection and tracking combined strategy. Moreover, motion stabilization, dynamic registration and color harmonization contribute to the excellent augmented performance in this automatic VCI system.;Coding efficiency is an important objective in video coding. In recent years, video coding standards have been developing by adding new tools. However, it costs numerous modifications in the complex coding systems. Therefore, it is desirable to consider alternative standard-compliant approaches without modifying the codec structures. In the third part, an exemplar-based data pruning video compression scheme for intra frame is introduced. Data pruning is used as a pre-processing tool to remove part of video data before they are encoded. At the decoder, missing data is reconstructed by a sparse linear combination of similar patches. The novelty is to create a patch library to exploit similarity of patches. The scheme achieves an average 4% bit rate reduction on some high definition videos

    Exploiting flow dynamics for super-resolution in contrast-enhanced ultrasound

    Ultrasound localization microscopy offers new radiation-free diagnostic tools for vascular imaging deep within the tissue. Sequential localization of echoes returned from inert microbubbles with low-concentration within the bloodstream reveal the vasculature with capillary resolution. Despite its high spatial resolution, low microbubble concentrations dictate the acquisition of tens of thousands of images, over the course of several seconds to tens of seconds, to produce a single super-resolved image. %since each echo is required to be well separated from adjacent microbubbles. Such long acquisition times and stringent constraints on microbubble concentration are undesirable in many clinical scenarios. To address these restrictions, sparsity-based approaches have recently been developed. These methods reduce the total acquisition time dramatically, while maintaining good spatial resolution in settings with considerable microbubble overlap. %Yet, non of the reported methods exploit the fact that microbubbles actually flow within the bloodstream. % to improve recovery. Here, we further improve sparsity-based super-resolution ultrasound imaging by exploiting the inherent flow of microbubbles and utilize their motion kinematics. While doing so, we also provide quantitative measurements of microbubble velocities. Our method relies on simultaneous tracking and super-localization of individual microbubbles in a frame-by-frame manner, and as such, may be suitable for real-time implementation. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach on both simulations and {\it in-vivo} contrast enhanced human prostate scans, acquired with a clinically approved scanner.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

    MinoanER: Schema-Agnostic, Non-Iterative, Massively Parallel Resolution of Web Entities

    Entity Resolution (ER) aims to identify different descriptions in various Knowledge Bases (KBs) that refer to the same entity. ER is challenged by the Variety, Volume and Veracity of entity descriptions published in the Web of Data. To address them, we propose the MinoanER framework that simultaneously fulfills full automation, support of highly heterogeneous entities, and massive parallelization of the ER process. MinoanER leverages a token-based similarity of entities to define a new metric that derives the similarity of neighboring entities from the most important relations, as they are indicated only by statistics. A composite blocking method is employed to capture different sources of matching evidence from the content, neighbors, or names of entities. The search space of candidate pairs for comparison is compactly abstracted by a novel disjunctive blocking graph and processed by a non-iterative, massively parallel matching algorithm that consists of four generic, schema-agnostic matching rules that are quite robust with respect to their internal configuration. We demonstrate that the effectiveness of MinoanER is comparable to existing ER tools over real KBs exhibiting low Variety, but it outperforms them significantly when matching KBs with high Variety.Comment: Presented at EDBT 2001

    Object Detection in 20 Years: A Survey

    Object detection, as of one the most fundamental and challenging problems in computer vision, has received great attention in recent years. Its development in the past two decades can be regarded as an epitome of computer vision history. If we think of today's object detection as a technical aesthetics under the power of deep learning, then turning back the clock 20 years we would witness the wisdom of cold weapon era. This paper extensively reviews 400+ papers of object detection in the light of its technical evolution, spanning over a quarter-century's time (from the 1990s to 2019). A number of topics have been covered in this paper, including the milestone detectors in history, detection datasets, metrics, fundamental building blocks of the detection system, speed up techniques, and the recent state of the art detection methods.     Towards Learning Representations in Visual Computing Tasks

    abstract: The performance of most of the visual computing tasks depends on the quality of the features extracted from the raw data. Insightful feature representation increases the performance of many learning algorithms by exposing the underlying explanatory factors of the output for the unobserved input. A good representation should also handle anomalies in the data such as missing samples and noisy input caused by the undesired, external factors of variation. It should also reduce the data redundancy. Over the years, many feature extraction processes have been invented to produce good representations of raw images and videos. The feature extraction processes can be categorized into three groups. The first group contains processes that are hand-crafted for a specific task. Hand-engineering features requires the knowledge of domain experts and manual labor. However, the feature extraction process is interpretable and explainable. Next group contains the latent-feature extraction processes. While the original feature lies in a high-dimensional space, the relevant factors for a task often lie on a lower dimensional manifold. The latent-feature extraction employs hidden variables to expose the underlying data properties that cannot be directly measured from the input. Latent features seek a specific structure such as sparsity or low-rank into the derived representation through sophisticated optimization techniques. The last category is that of deep features. These are obtained by passing raw input data with minimal pre-processing through a deep network. Its parameters are computed by iteratively minimizing a task-based loss. In this dissertation, I present four pieces of work where I create and learn suitable data representations. The first task employs hand-crafted features to perform clinically-relevant retrieval of diabetic retinopathy images. The second task uses latent features to perform content-adaptive image enhancement. The third task ranks a pair of images based on their aestheticism. The goal of the last task is to capture localized image artifacts in small datasets with patch-level labels. For both these tasks, I propose novel deep architectures and show significant improvement over the previous state-of-art approaches.     Fast and robust 3D feature extraction from sparse point clouds

    Matching 3D point clouds, a critical operation in map building and localization, is difficult with Velodyne-type sensors due to the sparse and non-uniform point clouds that they produce. Standard methods from dense 3D point clouds are generally not effective. In this paper, we describe a featurebased approach using Principal Components Analysis (PCA) of neighborhoods of points, which results in mathematically principled line and plane features. The key contribution in this work is to show how this type of feature extraction can be done efficiently and robustly even on non-uniformly sampled point clouds. The resulting detector runs in real-time and can be easily tuned to have a low false positive rate, simplifying data association. We evaluate the performance of our algorithm on an autonomous car at the MCity Test Facility using a Velodyne HDL-32E, and we compare our results against the state-of-theart NARF keypoint detector. © 2016 IEEE
