    The Research Space: using the career paths of scholars to predict the evolution of the research output of individuals, institutions, and nations

    In recent years scholars have built maps of science by connecting the academic fields that cite each other, are cited together, or that cite a similar literature. But since scholars cannot always publish in the fields they cite, or that cite them, these science maps are only rough proxies for the potential of a scholar, organization, or country, to enter a new academic field. Here we use a large dataset of scholarly publications disambiguated at the individual level to create a map of science-or research space-where links connect pairs of fields based on the probability that an individual has published in both of them. We find that the research space is a significantly more accurate predictor of the fields that individuals and organizations will enter in the future than citation based science maps. At the country level, however, the research space and citations based science maps are equally accurate. These findings show that data on career trajectories-the set of fields that individuals have previously published in-provide more accurate predictors of future research output for more focalized units-such as individuals or organizations-than citation based science maps

    Energy resource management under the influence of the weekend transition considering an intensive use of electric vehicles

    Energy resource scheduling is becoming increasingly important, as the use of distributed resources is intensified and of massive electric vehicle is envisaged. The present paper proposes a methodology for day-ahead energy resource scheduling for smart grids considering the intensive use of distributed generation and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G). This method considers that the energy resources are managed by a Virtual Power Player (VPP) which established contracts with their owners. It takes into account these contracts, the users' requirements subjected to the VPP, and several discharge price steps. The full AC power flow calculation included in the model takes into account network constraints. The influence of the successive day requirements on the day-ahead optimal solution is discussed and considered in the proposed model. A case study with a 33-bus distribution network and V2G is used to illustrate the good performance of the proposed method

    En este artículo se analiza mediante indicadores bibliométricos la producción científica argentina del período 2001-2010 recogida en el SCImago Journal & Country Rank en cinco áreas prioritarias de I+D establecidas en el Plan Estratégico Nacional en Ciencia, Tecnología e Innovación "Bicentenario" (2006-2010). Se emplean indicadores cuantitativos y cualitativos relativos para dar cuenta del desempeño científico de la producción doméstica con respecto a América Latina y el Caribe y el resto del mundo. De las áreas temáticas seleccionadas, se detecta que el campo disciplinar Agricultural and Biological Sciences es el que muestra mayor crecimiento, actividad y visibilidad a nivel regional y mundial.This paper analyses the Argentine scientific production of period 2001-2010 collected from SCImago Journal & Country Rank in five priority areas for R&D set in the National Strategic Plan on Science, Technology and Innovation "Bicentennial" (2006-2010).     Dataset on broadband electrochemical impedance spectroscopy of Lithium-Ion batteries for different values of the state-of-charge

    This dataset consists of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy measurements on commonly-used batteries, namely Samsung ICR18650-26J cylindrical Lithium-Ion cells. The complex impedance of the batteries was measured at a set of fourteen different frequencies from 0.05 Hz to 1000 Hz, using a random-phase multi-sine excitation signal. For each excited frequency, the current amplitude was 50 mA, resulting in a measurement uncertainty of approximately 0.1 mΩ. Six measurement repetitions are provided at ten different states-of-charge of four different brand-new batteries. Repeated EIS measurement results were obtained, for each individual battery cell, from six separate discharge cycles. All measurements were performed with the battery placed in a temperature-controlled chamber at 25 ± 1 °C. Batteries were allowed to thermalize before each measurement

    A machine learning taxonomic classifier for science publications

    Dissertação de mestrado integrado em Engineering and Management of Information SystemsThe evolution in scientific production, associated with the growing interdomain collaboration of knowledge and the increasing co-authorship of scientific works remains supported by processes of manual, highly subjective classification, subject to misinterpretation. The very taxonomy on which this same classification process is based is not consensual, with governmental organizations resorting to taxonomies that do not keep up with changes in scientific areas, and indexers / repositories that seek to keep up with those changes. We find a reality distinct from what is expected and that the domains where scientific work is recorded can easily be misrepresentative of the work itself. The taxonomy applied today by governmental bodies, such as the one that regulates scientific production in Portugal, is not enough, is limiting, and promotes classification in areas close to the desired, therefore with great potential for error. An automatic classification process based on machine learning algorithms presents itself as a possible solution to the subjectivity problem in classification, and while it does not solve the issue of taxonomy mismatch this work shows this possibility with proved results. In this work, we propose a classification taxonomy, as well as we develop a process based on machine learning algorithms to solve the classification problem. We also present a set of directions for future work for an increasingly representative classification of evolution in science, which is not intended as airtight, but flexible and perhaps increasingly based on phenomena and not just disciplines.A evolução na produção de ciência, associada à crescente colaboração interdomínios do conhecimento e à também crescente coautoria de trabalhos permanece suportada por processos de classificação manual, subjetiva e sujeita a interpretações erradas. A própria taxonomia na qual assenta esse mesmo processo de classificação não é consensual, com organismos estatais a recorrerem a taxonomias que não acompanham as alterações nas áreas científicas, e indexadores/repositórios que procuram acompanhar essas mesmas alterações. Verificamos uma realidade distinta do espectável e que os domínios onde são registados os trabalhos científicos podem facilmente estar desenquadrados. A taxonomia hoje aplicada pelos organismos governamentais, como o caso do organismo que regulamenta a produção científica em Portugal, não é suficiente, é limitadora, e promove a classificação em domínios aproximados do desejado, logo com grande potencial para erro. Um processo de classificação automática com base em algoritmos de machine learning apresenta-se como uma possível solução para o problema da subjetividade na classificação, e embora não resolva a questão do desenquadramento da taxonomia utilizada, é apresentada neste trabalho como uma possibilidade comprovada. Neste trabalho propomos uma taxonomia de classificação, bem como nós desenvolvemos um processo baseado em machine learning algoritmos para resolver o problema de classificação. Apresentamos ainda um conjunto de direções para trabalhos futuros para uma classificação cada vez mais representativa da evolução nas ciências, que não pretende ser hermética, mas flexível e talvez cada vez mais baseada em fenómenos e não apenas em disciplinas

    The data to construct the missing wind-speed value in the weather station record at “Collado de Yuste”, between the years 2002 to 2012, was calculated using wind speed data recorded in two other nearby weather stations, those in “Solana del Zapatero” and “Calar Alto”. The three mentioned stations are located in the mountain range of the province of Almeria, Autonomous Community of Andalusia, Spain. After calculating the degree of association using the correlation coefficient and Wavelet Transform Scalogram, the data was successfully constructed.     Differences between journals and years in the proportions of students, researchers and faculty registering Mendeley articles

    This article contains two investigations into Mendeley reader counts with the same dataset. Mendeley reader counts provide evidence of early scholarly impact for journal articles, but reflect the reading of a relatively young subset of all researchers. To investigate whether this age bias is constant or varies by narrow field and publication year, this article compares the proportions of student, researcher and faculty readers for articles published 1996-2016 in 36 large monodisciplinary journals. In these journals, undergraduates recorded the newest research and faculty the oldest, with large differences between journals. The existence of substantial differences in the composition of readers between related fields points to the need for caution when using Mendeley readers as substitutes for citations for broad fields. The second investigation shows, with the same data, that there are substantial differences between narrow fields in the time taken for Scopus citations to be as numerous as Mendeley readers. Thus, even narrow field differences can impact on the relative value of Mendeley compared to citation counts

    Os efeitos da pandemia do Covid-19 no desempenho das revistas acadêmicas: o caso da Turquia

    Since the beginning of 2020, “Covid-19” has affected the whole world in an unprecedented way in modern times. It is inevitable that this pandemic, which has negatively affected many fields, will also have an impact on academic journals. The aim of this study is to determine the effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the performance of academic journals. In our study, a “Data Envelopment Analysis” methodology with 3 inputs and 3 outputs was used to determine the relative “performance of the journals”. Within the scope of the study, 109 journals published in “Turkey” and scanned in “Web of Science” indexes were examined. Results show that eleven journals were efficient in 2019, while in 2020 this number decreased to seven. Four fields have been positively affected by the pandemic and journals publishing in these fields have increased their efficiencies. Eighteen fields were adversely affected by the pandemic and the efficiency of journal publishing in these fields decreased. Eleven fields and journals publishing in these fields maintained their efficiency both before and during the pandemic. As the Covid-19 pandemic is not over yet, our data is limited. In the coming years, more detailed and comprehensive studies can be carried out with more extensive data and a further number of journals from different countries

    The present report is the second volume of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) excellence mapping. While the first volume concentrates on the productivity and the impact of the JRC scientific work, in terms of publications and citations, in general, the present volume analyses a particular subset of publications that have been jointly produced with scientists from other organisations. In particular, it analyses the co-authored publications between the JRC and the world academic institutions, which are highly ranked in different world university rankings. In the context of this analysis, three different rankings have been used (Times higher education ranking, QS world university ranking and Academic ranking of world universities) and the Top-100 academic institutions in each of them have been analysed in order to investigate: 1) the existence of formal agreements with the JRC; 2) number of co-authored publications with the JRC and 3) the scientific areas where the collaborations occur.JRC.A.2-Planning, Evaluation and Knowledge Managemen
