poster abstractWe introduce a new mobile instant messaging application, which specifically support users’ emotional communication. The invention relates to a novel method in instant messaging to input interactive emoticons through multi-touch gestures. We add additional mode of gesture to instant messaging keyboard and also send text in different colors to present the emotion

Non-verbal communication in instant messaging: conveying emotion through voice interfaces

Instant Messaging has become a keystone of human personal communication, where the biggest application WhatsApp is currently serving over 2 billion people. Plenty of research confirms people use non-verbal communication in computer mediated communication, allowing for emotional communication at distance. At the same time, Virtual Personal Assistants, such as the Google Assistant and Apple Siri, are continuously expanding their market share. Recently, they have included support for voice-based instant messaging, which includes reading aloud instant messages. As instant messages are synthesised, included digital non-verbal communication traits may be lost or omitted. This study aims to explore the impact of text-to-speech conversion of instant messages by virtual personal assistants on recognition of non-verbal cues by the receiving party. Secondly, the research aims to explore and test methods to include non-verbal communication traits in instant messages to speech synthesis, by the inclusion of spatial arrays (emojis) and modification of synthetic voice prosody. Sentiment analysis and emotion detection are explored and applied to extract emotional data from instant messages, which can be used to modify speech synthesis characteristics, such as pitch and speech rate, to mimic human paralanguage and vocal non-verbal communication to convey emotion

EXPRESSION OF EMOTION IN INSTANT MESSAGING

poster abstractEmotion expression in text-based instant messaging (IM) has received little empirical scrutiny. The emotional cues people use to express their dif-ferent emotions in IM communication and how their personality traits affect those cues are the main focus of this study. Results of a preliminary study in IM suggest that in stressful situations people apply significantly fewer vocal spelling emotional cues than in non-stressful situations. There is also a sig-nificant relationship between conscientiousness as a personality trait and use of lexical surrogate emotional cues in this type of communication. Our pro-posed study expands upon preliminary data to uncover more significant dif-ferences among the emotional cues people use to express different emotions in IM, including the role of relevant personality traits. Identifying how users express emotions in IM assists researchers and designers in focusing on the users’ emotional needs and results in the improvement of emotional com-munication strategies in IM

The F@ Framework of Designing Awareness Mechanisms in Instant Messaging

This paper presents our research on awareness support in Instant Messaging (IM). The paper starts with a brief overview of empirical study of IM, using an online survey and face-to-face interviews to identify user needs for awareness support. The study identified a need for supporting four aspects of awareness, awareness of multiple concurrent conversations, conversational awareness, presence awareness of a group conversation, and visibility of moment-to-moment listeners and viewers. Based on the empirical study and existing research on awareness, we have developed the F@ (read as fat) framework of awareness. F@ comprises of the abstract level and the concrete level. The former includes an in-depth description of various awareness aspects in IM, whilst the latter utilises temporal logic to formalise fundamental time-related awareness aspects. F@ helps developers gain a better understanding of awareness and thereby design usable mechanisms to support awareness. Applying F@, we have designed several mechanisms to support various aspect of awareness in IM

The modern workplace is inherently collaborative, and this collaboration relies on effective communication among coworkers. Instant messaging is the multitasking tools of choice most people chatting over IM do other things at the same time. The use of IM in workplace is less intrusive than the use of phone, more immediate than email and has added advantage due to the ability to detect presence. In order for institution to maximize increased business productivity using instant messaging its imperative that organizations define and publish ICT policies, guidelines and regulations.Overall IM boosts business performance by making operations faster, more agile, and more efficient with very little additional cost thus Organizations that deploy IM would reap significant Return on Investment.Institutions should adopt IM meetings which are be more efficient and less prone to straying off topic, because of the relative effort of typing versus talking.Comment: 8 page

SMS Text-Messaging and the Nigerian Christian Context: Constructing Values and Sentiments

The Global System of Mobile Communications (GSM) in Nigeria brought with it a variety of English that is situationally distinct and context sensitive. Thus SMS text-messages are viewed as discourses that presuppose speech events among interlocutors that share a common social behaviour and cultural values. This study shows the extent to which test-messaging constructs Christian values, belief systems and sentiments in Nigeria. Fifty-three (53) text samples collected in Lagos and Ota areas of Southwest Nigeria between 2005 and 2007 are analysed within the framework of computer-mediated discourse analysis (Herring 2001). Result shows that with its peculiar orthographic convention and style, text-messaging has become popular among Christian adherents not just because it is short, cheap and fast but that it is individualistic and fits well into a context where respect for individuals is emphasized. Analysis also shows that SMS text-messaging is used to disseminate messages associated with faith-based pronouncements, prayer and well-wishing, admonition and assurance, appreciation and praise, seasons greetings and general information/announcements. These functions tend to promote love and cooperation among church members. Key words: SMS-text messages, Christian, Discourse Introduction Th

    A Foundation for Emotional Expressivity

To express emotions to others in mobile text messaging in our view require designs that can both capture some of the ambiguity and subtleness that characterizes emotional interaction and keep the media specific qualities. Through the use of a body movement analysis and a dimensional model of emotion experiences, we arrived at a design for a mobile messaging service, eMoto. The service makes use of the sub-symbolic expressions; colors, shapes and animations, for expressing emotions in an open-ended way. Here we present the design process and a user study of those expressions, where the results show that the use of these sub-symbolic expressions can work as a foundation to use as a creative tool, but still allowing for the communication to be situated. The inspiration taken from body movements proved to be very useful as a design input. It was also reflected in the way our subjects described the expressions

Assessing the Nigerianness of SMS Text-Messages in English

In the history of the English language certain developments have left significant linguistic marks on the language. As new developments and cultural forms occur, new words and styles of expression evolve with them and spread. This is true of the new linguistic style that is associated with the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) revolution in Nigeria since 2001. GSM has brought with it a variety of English that is situationally distinctive and context sensitive (Awonusi, 2004:45)
