    Source identification for mobile devices, based on wavelet transforms combined with sensor imperfections

    One of the most relevant applications of digital image forensics is to accurately identify the device used for taking a given set of images, a problem called source identification. This paper studies recent developments in the field and proposes the mixture of two techniques (Sensor Imperfections and Wavelet Transforms) to get better source identification of images generated with mobile devices. Our results show that Sensor Imperfections and Wavelet Transforms can jointly serve as good forensic features to help trace the source camera of images produced by mobile phones. Furthermore, the model proposed here can also determine with high precision both the brand and model of the device

    Computationally efficient locally adaptive demosaicing of color filter array images using the dual-tree complex wavelet packet transform

    Most digital cameras use an array of alternating color filters to capture the varied colors in a scene with a single sensor chip. Reconstruction of a full color image from such a color mosaic is what constitutes demosaicing. In this paper, a technique is proposed that performs this demosaicing in a way that incurs a very low computational cost. This is done through a (dual-tree complex) wavelet interpretation of the demosaicing problem. By using a novel locally adaptive approach for demosaicing (complex) wavelet coefficients, we show that many of the common demosaicing artifacts can be avoided in an efficient way. Results demonstrate that the proposed method is competitive with respect to the current state of the art, but incurs a lower computational cost. The wavelet approach also allows for computationally effective denoising or deblurring approaches

    Color Filter Array Image Analysis for Joint Denoising and Demosaicking

    Noise is among the worst artifacts that affect the perceptual quality of the output from a digital camera. While cost-effective and popular, single-sensor solutions to camera architectures are not adept at noise suppression. In this scheme, data are typically obtained via a spatial subsampling procedure implemented as a color filter array (CFA), a physical construction whereby each pixel location measures the intensity of the light corresponding to only a single color. Aside from undersampling, observations made under noisy conditions typically deteriorate the estimates of the full-color image in the reconstruction process commonly referred to as demosaicking or CFA interpolation in the literature. A typical CFA scheme involves the canonical color triples (i.e., red, green, blue), and the most prevalent arrangement is called Bayer pattern. As the general trend of increased image resolution continues due to prevalence of multimedia, the importance of interpolation is de-emphasized while the concerns for computational efficiency, noise, and color fidelity play an increasingly prominent role in the decision making of a digital camera architect. For instance, the interpolation artifacts become less noticeable as the size of the pixel shrinks with respect to the image features, while the decreased dimensionality of the pixel sensors on the complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) and charge coupled device (CCD) sensors make the pixels more susceptible to noise. Photon-limited influences are also evident in low-light photography, ranging from a specialty camera for precision measurement to indoor consumer photography. Sensor data, which can be interpreted as subsampled or incomplete image data, undergo a series of image processing procedures in order to produce a digital photograph. However, these same steps may amplify noise introduced during image acquisition. Specifically, the demosaicking step is a major source of conflict between the image processing pipeline and image sensor noise characterization because the interpolation methods give high priority to preserving the sharpness of edges and textures. In the presence of noise, noise patterns may form false edge structures; therefore, the distortions at the output are typically correlated with the signal in a complicated manner that makes noise modelling mathematically intractable. Thus, it is natural to conceive of a rigorous tradeoff between demosaicking and image denoising

    Since capturing three color channels (red, green, and blue) per pixel increases the cost of digital cameras, most digital cameras capture only one color channel per pixel using a single image sensor. The images pass through a color filter array before being captured by the image sensor. Demosaicing is the process of reconstructing the missing color channels of the pixels in the color filtered image using their available neighboring pixels. There are many image demosaicing algorithms with varying reconstructed image quality and computational complexity. In this thesis, high performance hardware architectures are designed for two high quality image demosaicing algorithms with high computational complexity. The proposed hardware architectures are implemented on an FPGA. A high performance Alternating Projections (AP) image demosaicing hardware is proposed. This is the first AP image demosaicing hardware in the literature. A high performance Enhanced Effective Color Interpolation (EECI) image demosaicing hardware is proposed. This is the first EECI image demosaicing hardware in the literature. The proposed hardware architectures are implemented using Verilog HDL. The Verilog RTL codes are mapped to a Xilinx Virtex 6 FPGA. The proposed FPGA implementations are verified with post place & route simulations. They can process 31 and 94 full HD (1920x1080) images per second, respectively

    The aim of this survey is to provide a comprehensive overview of the state of the art in the area of image forensics. These techniques have been designed to identify the source of a digital image or to determine whether the content is authentic or modified, without the knowledge of any prior information about the image under analysis (and thus are defined as passive). All these tools work by detecting the presence, the absence, or the incongruence of some traces intrinsically tied to the digital image by the acquisition device and by any other operation after its creation. The paper has been organized by classifying the tools according to the position in the history of the digital image in which the relative footprint is left: acquisition-based methods, coding-based methods, and editing-based schemes

A hybrid ECI and Alternating Projections demosaicing algorithm and a high performance hardware architecture for this image demosaicing algorithm are proposed. The proposed hardware architectures are implemented using Verilog HDL. The Verilog RTL codes are mapped to Xilinx Virtex 6 FPGA. The proposed FPGA implementations are verified with post place & route simulations. They are capable of processing 160, 118, and 119 full HD images per second

    Machine learning based digital image forensics and steganalysis

    The security and trustworthiness of digital images have become crucial issues due to the simplicity of malicious processing. Therefore, the research on image steganalysis (determining if a given image has secret information hidden inside) and image forensics (determining the origin and authenticity of a given image and revealing the processing history the image has gone through) has become crucial to the digital society. In this dissertation, the steganalysis and forensics of digital images are treated as pattern classification problems so as to make advanced machine learning (ML) methods applicable. Three topics are covered: (1) architectural design of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) for steganalysis, (2) statistical feature extraction for camera model classification, and (3) real-world tampering detection and localization. For covert communications, steganography is used to embed secret messages into images by altering pixel values slightly. Since advanced steganography alters the pixel values in the image regions that are hard to be detected, the traditional ML-based steganalytic methods heavily relied on sophisticated manual feature design have been pushed to the limit. To overcome this difficulty, in-depth studies are conducted and reported in this dissertation so as to move the success achieved by the CNNs in computer vision to steganalysis. The outcomes achieved and reported in this dissertation are: (1) a proposed CNN architecture incorporating the domain knowledge of steganography and steganalysis, and (2) ensemble methods of the CNNs for steganalysis. The proposed CNN is currently one of the best classifiers against steganography. Camera model classification from images aims at assigning a given image to its source capturing camera model based on the statistics of image pixel values. For this, two types of statistical features are designed to capture the traces left by in-camera image processing algorithms. The first is Markov transition probabilities modeling block-DCT coefficients for JPEG images; the second is based on histograms of local binary patterns obtained in both the spatial and wavelet domains. The designed features serve as the input to train support vector machines, which have the best classification performance at the time the features are proposed. The last part of this dissertation documents the solutions delivered by the author’s team to The First Image Forensics Challenge organized by the Information Forensics and Security Technical Committee of the IEEE Signal Processing Society. In the competition, all the fake images involved were doctored by popular image-editing software to simulate the real-world scenario of tampering detection (determine if a given image has been tampered or not) and localization (determine which pixels have been tampered). In Phase-1 of the Challenge, advanced steganalysis features were successfully migrated to tampering detection. In Phase-2 of the Challenge, an efficient copy-move detector equipped with PatchMatch as a fast approximate nearest neighbor searching method were developed to identify duplicated regions within images. With these tools, the author’s team won the runner-up prizes in both the two phases of the Challenge
