How to deploy and manage, in an efficient and adaptive way, complex applications across multiple heterogeneous cloud platforms is one of the problems that have emerged with the cloud revolution. In this paper we present context, motivations and objectives of the EU research project SeaClouds, which aims at enabling a seamless adaptive multi-cloud management of complex applications by supporting the distribution, monitoring and migration of application modules over multiple heterogeneous cloud platforms. After positioning SeaClouds with respect to related cloud initiatives, we present the SeaClouds architecture and discuss some of its aspect, such as the use of the OASIS standard TOSCA and the compatibility with the OASIS CAMP initiative

Cloud resource orchestration in the multi-cloud landscape: a systematic review of existing frameworks

The number of both service providers operating in the cloud market and customers consuming cloud-based services is constantly increasing, proving that the cloud computing paradigm has successfully delivered its potential. Nevertheless, the unceasing growth of the cloud market is posing hard challenges on its participants. On the provider side, the capability of orchestrating resources in order to maximise profits without failing customers’ expectations is a matter of concern. On the customer side, the efficient resource selection from a plethora of similar services advertised by a multitude of providers is an open question. In such a multi-cloud landscape, several research initiatives advocate the employment of software frameworks (namely, cloud resource orchestration frameworks - CROFs) capable of orchestrating the heterogeneous resources offered by a multitude of cloud providers in a way that best suits the customer’s need. The objective of this paper is to provide the reader with a systematic review and comparison of the most relevant CROFs found in the literature, as well as to highlight the multi-cloud computing open issues that need to be addressed by the research community in the near future

Unified Management of Applications on Heterogeneous Clouds

Optimal Selection Techniques for Cloud Service Providers

Nowadays Cloud computing permeates almost every domain in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) and, increasingly, most of the action is shifting from large, dominant players toward independent, heterogeneous, private/hybrid deployments, in line with an ever wider range of business models and stakeholders. The rapid growth in the numbers and diversity of small and medium Cloud providers is bringing new challenges in the as-a-Services space. Indeed, significant hurdles for smaller Cloud service providers in being competitive with the incumbent market leaders induce some innovative players to "federate" deployments in order to pool a larger, virtually limitless, set of resources across the federation, and stand to gain in terms of economies of scale and resource usage efficiency. Several are the challenges that need to be addressed in building and managing a federated environment, that may go under the "Security", "Interoperability", "Versatility", "Automatic Selection" and "Scalability" labels. The aim of this paper is to present a survey about the approaches and challenges belonging to the "Automatic Selection" category. This work provides a literature review of different approaches adopted in the "Automatic and Optimal Cloud Service Provider Selection", also covering "Federated and Multi-Cloud" environments

Dynamic reconfiguration of cloud application architectures

[EN] Service-based cloud applications are software systems that continuously evolve to satisfy new user requirements and technological changes. This kind of applications also require elasticity, scalability, and high availability, which means that deployment of new functionalities or architectural adaptations to fulfill service level agreements (SLAs) should be performed while the application is in execution. Dynamic architectural reconfiguration is essential to minimize system disruptions while new or modified services are being integrated into existing cloud applications. Thus, cloud applications should be developed following principles that support dynamic reconfiguration of services, and also tools to automate these reconfigurations at runtime are needed. This paper presents an extension of a model-driven method for dynamic and incremental architecture reconfiguration of cloud services that allows developers to specify new services as software increments, and the tool to generate the implementation code for the services integration logic and the deployment and architectural reconfiguration scripts specific to the cloud environment in which the service will be deployed (e.g., Microsoft Azure). We also report the results of a quasi-experiment that empirically validate our method. It was conducted to evaluate their perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and perceived intention to use. The results show that the participants perceive the method to be useful, and they also expressed their intention to use the method in the future. Although further experiments must be carried out to corroborate these results, the method has proven to be a promising architectural reconfiguration process for cloud applications in the context of agile and incremental development processes. This research is supported by the Value@Cloud project (MINECO TIN2013-46300-R), DIUC_XIV_2016_038 project, and the Microsoft Azure Research AwardZúñiga-Prieto, MÁ.; Gonzalez-Huerta, J.; Insfran, E.; Abrahao Gonzales, SM.

Cloud computing is characterized by a model in which computing resources are delivered as services in a pay-as-you-go manner, which eliminates the need for upfront investments, reducing the time to market and opportunity costs. Despite its benefits, cloud computing brought new concerns about provider dependence and data confidentiality, which further led to a growing trend on consuming resources from multiple clouds. However, building multi-cloud systems is still very challenging and time consuming due to the heterogeneity across cloud providers' offerings and the high-variability in the configuration of cloud providers. This variability is expressed by the large number of available services and the many different ways in which they can be combined and configured. In order to ensure correct setup of a multi-cloud environment, developers must be aware of service offerings and configuration options from multiple cloud providers. To tackle this problem, this thesis proposes a software product line-based approach for managing the variability in cloud environments in order to automate the setup and adaptation of multi-cloud environments. The contributions of this thesis enable to automatically generate a configuration or reconfiguration plan for a multi-cloud environment from a description of its requirements. The conducted experiments aim to assess the impact of the approach on the automated analysis of feature models and the feasibility of the approach to automate the setup and adaptation of multi-cloud environments.
