    Selection of a new hardware and software platform for railway interlocking

    The interlocking system is one of the main actors for safe railway transportation. In most cases, the whole system is supplied by a single vendor. The recent regulations from the European Union direct for an “open” architecture to invite new game changers and reduce life-cycle costs. The objective of the thesis is to propose an alternative platform that could replace a legacy interlocking system. In the thesis, various commercial off-the-shelf hardware and software products are studied which could be assembled to compose an alternative interlocking platform. The platform must be open enough to adapt to any changes in the constituent elements and abide by the proposed baselines of new standardization initiatives, such as ERTMS, EULYNX, and RCA. In this thesis, a comparative study is performed between these products based on hardware capacity, architecture, communication protocols, programming tools, security, railway certifications, life-cycle issues, etc

    In recent years, a considerable amount of effort has been devoted, both in industry and academia, to the development, validation and verification of critical systems, i.e. those systems whose malfunctions or failures reach a critical level both in terms of risks to human life as well as having a large economic impact.Certifications of Critical Systems – The CECRIS Experience documents the main insights on Cost Effective Verification and Validation processes that were gained during work in the European Research Project CECRIS (acronym for Certification of Critical Systems). The objective of the research was to tackle the challenges of certification by focusing on those aspects that turn out to be more difficult/important for current and future critical systems industry: the effective use of methodologies, processes and tools.The CECRIS project took a step forward in the growing field of development, verification and validation and certification of critical systems. It focused on the more difficult/important aspects of critical system development, verification and validation and certification process. Starting from both the scientific and industrial state of the art methodologies for system development and the impact of their usage on the verification and validation and certification of critical systems, the project aimed at developing strategies and techniques supported by automatic or semi-automatic tools and methods for these activities, setting guidelines to support engineers during the planning of the verification and validation phases

    Development and certification of mixed-criticality embedded systems based on probabilistic timing analysis

    An increasing variety of emerging systems relentlessly replaces or augments the functionality of mechanical subsystems with embedded electronics. For quantity, complexity, and use, the safety of such subsystems is an increasingly important matter. Accordingly, those systems are subject to safety certification to demonstrate system's safety by rigorous development processes and hardware/software constraints. The massive augment in embedded processors' complexity renders the arduous certification task significantly harder to achieve. The focus of this thesis is to address the certification challenges in multicore architectures: despite their potential to integrate several applications on a single platform, their inherent complexity imperils their timing predictability and certification. Recently, the Measurement-Based Probabilistic Timing Analysis (MBPTA) technique emerged as an alternative to deal with hardware/software complexity. The innovation that MBPTA brings about is, however, a major step from current certification procedures and standards. The particular contributions of this Thesis include: (i) the definition of certification arguments for mixed-criticality integration upon multicore processors. In particular we propose a set of safety mechanisms and procedures as required to comply with functional safety standards. For timing predictability, (ii) we present a quantitative approach to assess the likelihood of execution-time exceedance events with respect to the risk reduction requirements on safety standards. To this end, we build upon the MBPTA approach and we present the design of a safety-related source of randomization (SoR), that plays a key role in the platform-level randomization needed by MBPTA. And (iii) we evaluate current certification guidance with respect to emerging high performance design trends like caches. Overall, this Thesis pushes the certification limits in the use of multicore and MBPTA technology in Critical Real-Time Embedded Systems (CRTES) and paves the way towards their adoption in industry.Una creciente variedad de sistemas emergentes reemplazan o aumentan la funcionalidad de subsistemas mecánicos con componentes electrónicos embebidos. El aumento en la cantidad y complejidad de dichos subsistemas electrónicos así como su cometido, hacen de su seguridad una cuestión de creciente importancia. Tanto es así que la comercialización de estos sistemas críticos está sujeta a rigurosos procesos de certificación donde se garantiza la seguridad del sistema mediante estrictas restricciones en el proceso de desarrollo y diseño de su hardware y software. Esta tesis trata de abordar los nuevos retos y dificultades dadas por la introducción de procesadores multi-núcleo en dichos sistemas críticos: aunque su mayor rendimiento despierta el interés de la industria para integrar múltiples aplicaciones en una sola plataforma, suponen una mayor complejidad. Su arquitectura desafía su análisis temporal mediante los métodos tradicionales y, asimismo, su certificación es cada vez más compleja y costosa. Con el fin de lidiar con estas limitaciones, recientemente se ha desarrollado una novedosa técnica de análisis temporal probabilístico basado en medidas (MBPTA). La innovación de esta técnica, sin embargo, supone un gran cambio cultural respecto a los estándares y procedimientos tradicionales de certificación. En esta línea, las contribuciones de esta tesis están agrupadas en tres ejes principales: (i) definición de argumentos de seguridad para la certificación de aplicaciones de criticidad-mixta sobre plataformas multi-núcleo. Se definen, en particular, mecanismos de seguridad, técnicas de diagnóstico y reacción de faltas acorde con el estándar IEC 61508 sobre una arquitectura multi-núcleo de referencia. Respecto al análisis temporal, (ii) presentamos la cuantificación de la probabilidad de exceder un límite temporal y su relación con los requisitos de reducción de riesgos derivados de los estándares de seguridad funcional. Con este fin, nos basamos en la técnica MBPTA y presentamos el diseño de una fuente de números aleatorios segura; un componente clave para conseguir las propiedades aleatorias requeridas por MBPTA a nivel de plataforma. Por último, (iii) extrapolamos las guías actuales para la certificación de arquitecturas multi-núcleo a una solución comercial de 8 núcleos y las evaluamos con respecto a las tendencias emergentes de diseño de alto rendimiento (caches).     Safe software development for a video-based train detection system in accordance with EN 50128

    Diese Studienarbeit gibt einen Überblick über ausgewählte Teile des Softwareentwicklungsprozesses für sicherheitsrelevante Applikationen am Beispiel eines videobasierten Zugerkennungssystems. Eine IP-Kamera und ein externer Bildverarbeitungscomputer wurden dazu mit einer speziell entworfenen, verteilten Software ausgestattet. Die in Ada und C geschriebenen Teile kommunizieren dabei über ein dediziertes, UDP-basiertes Netzwerkprotokoll. Beide Programme wurden intensiv anhand verschiedener Techniken analysiert, die in der Norm EN 50128 festgelegt sind, welche sich speziell an Software für Eisenbahnsteuerungs- und überwachungssysteme richtet. Eine an der Norm orientierte Struktur mit Verweisen auf die diskutierten Techniken zu Beginn eines jeden Abschnitts erlaubt einen schnellen Vergleich mit den originalen Anforderungen des Normtexts. Zusammenfassend haben sich die Techniken bis auf wenige Ausnahmen als sehr geeignet für die praktische Entwicklung von sicherer Software erwiesen. Allerdings entbindet die Norm durch ihre teils sehr abstrakten Anforderungen das am Projekt beteiligte Personal in keinster Weise von seiner individuellen Verantwortung. An IP-camera and an external image processing computer were equipped with a custom-built, distributed software system. Written in Ada and C, the system parts communicate via a dedicated UDP-based protocol. Both programs were subject to intense analysis according to measures laid down in the EN 50128 standard specifically targeted at software for railway control and protection systems. Preceding each section, a structure resembling the standard document with references to the discussed measures allows for easy comparison with the original requirements of EN 50128. In summary, the techniques have proven to be very suitable for practical safe software development in all but very few edge-cases. However, the highly abstract descriptive level of the standard requires the staff involved to accept an enormous personal responsibility throughout the entire development process.     Security in Open Model Software with Hardware Virtualisation – The Railway Control System Perspective

    Using the openETCS initiative as a starting point, we describe how open software can be applied in combination with platform-specific, potentially closed source extensions, in the development, verification, validation and certification of safety-critical railway control systems. We analyse the safety and security threats presented by this approach and discuss conventional operating system partitioning mechanisms, as well as virtualisation methods with respect to their potential to overcome these problems. Furthermore, we advocate a shift from open source to open models, in order to increase the development efficiency of combined open and proprietary solutions

    As the growth of reliability of PLCs and the amount of automation in various machinery has increased significantly, the substance of safety equipment reliability has grown in the absence of human control. These factors have led to an increase in the demand for safety-related PLCs. The complexity and size of the software-based control applications grows and so does the importance to be able to produce safe software code. The requirements for machine safety posed by the national and international laws are intricate and many industrial standards have been formed to facilitate designing machinery that meet these requirements. This thesis concentrates on these standards and the recommendation and requirements they pose on safety analysis, design process, operating systems, tools and programming languages. Through charting various safety-related requirements it becomes clear that compared to non-safety-related projects, safety-related projects require many times more documentation on made design choices, analysis and implementations. The requirements for this large amount of documentation are based on the need to be able to provide evidence on sufficient rigour and comprehensiveness of the made safety analyses and implementation quality. To be able to control all this information this thesis recommends forming information databases for companies designing such machinery. These databases would facilitate finding and updating all the relevant information from safety standards to project-specific documents in one place

    Climbing the Software Assurance Ladder - Practical Formal Verification for Reliable Software

    There is a strong link between software quality and software reliability. By decreasing the probability of imperfection in the software, we can augment its reliability guarantees. At one extreme, software with one unknown bug is not reliable. At the other extreme, perfect software is fully reliable. Formal verification with SPARK has been used for years to get as close as possible to zero-defect software. We present the well-established processes surrounding the use of SPARK at Altran UK, as well as the deployment experiments performed at Thales to finetune the gradual insertion of formal verification techniques in existing processes. Experience of both long-term and new users helped us define adoption and usage guidelines for SPARK based on five levels of increasing assurance that map well with industrial needs in practice
