    Interactive and Audience Adaptive Digital Signage Using Real-Time Computer Vision

    In this paper we present the development of an interactive, content‐aware and cost‐effective digital signage system. Using a monocular camera installed within the frame of a digital signage display, we employ real‐time computer vision algorithms to extract temporal, spatial and demographic features of the observers, which are further used for observer‐specific broadcasting of digital signage content. The number of observers is obtained by the Viola and Jones face detection algorithm, whilst facial images are registered using multi‐view Active Appearance Models. The distance of the observers from the system is estimated from the interpupillary distance of registered faces. Demographic features, including gender and age group, are determined using SVM classifiers to achieve individual observer‐specific selection and adaption of the digital signage broadcasting content. The developed system was evaluated at the laboratory study level and in a field study performed for audience measurement research. Comparison of our monocular localization module with the Kinect stereo‐system reveals a comparable level of accuracy. The facial characterization module is evaluated on the FERET database with 95% accuracy for gender classification and 92% for age group. Finally, the field study demonstrates the applicability of the developed system in real‐life environments

    New strategic approaches for implementing intelligent streetscape towards livable streets in City of Riyadh

    Streetscape can be considered as a term “which can be used to clarify and explain the street's built-in and the basic structure, also it is known as the design of the visual appeal and quality of the street effect. A good tool for improving urban quality and establishing a feeling of place is design of streetscape. People's requirements for public areas have changed as internet usage has continued to expand.. The numbers of people who use cars has increased a lot in Riyadh city. In reality, this leads to some problems in a direct and an indirect way, such as car accidents, traffic overcrowding, lack of services for bicyclists and pedestrians, weak social relationships between the people, and high obesity levels. Reconsider design of streetscape in Riyadh city especially in the era of digital information technology will revitalize regions by providing reshaping the urban experience toward higher livability that respond to and connect with onlookers in order to increase understanding of onlookers' activities in the streets, promote their sense of place, and improve safety and livability in urban areas.. The presented study focuses on the qualitative approach that is according to the related theoretical exploration and research; so, this paper combines the design of streetscape with digital information technology, with new ideas of intelligent streetscape’s design for enhancing Riyadh city to make the user's life livable. The current paper ended with proposed strategic approaches and suggestions to enhance the city of Riyadh's streetscape style as an outcome of the theoretical research. Results indicated that streets, which contain a close combination with the resident’s daily life activities and the important consequences on their mental comfort, have not attracted any care in terms of academic research. This resulted in a failure in providing solid strategic approaches for intelligent design of streetscape in Riyadh city

    Language-free graphical signage improves human performance and reduces anxiety when working collaboratively with robots

    As robots become more ubiquitous, and their capabilities extend, novice users will require intuitive instructional information related to their use. This is particularly important in the manufacturing sector, which is set to be transformed under Industry 4.0 by the deployment of collaborative robots in support of traditionally low-skilled, manual roles. In the first study of its kind, this paper reports how static graphical signage can improve performance and reduce anxiety in participants physically collaborating with a semi-autonomous robot. Three groups of 30 participants collaborated with a robot to perform a manufacturing-type process using graphical information that was relevant to the task, irrelevant, or absent. The results reveal that the group exposed to relevant signage was significantly more accurate in undertaking the task. Furthermore, their anxiety towards robots significantly decreased as a function of increasing accuracy. Finally, participants exposed to graphical signage showed positive emotional valence in response to successful trials. At a time when workers are concerned about the threat posed by robots to jobs, and with advances in technology requiring upskilling of the workforce, it is important to provide intuitive and supportive information to users. Whilst increasingly sophisticated technical solutions are being sought to improve communication and confidence in human-robot co-working, our findings demonstrate how simple signage can still be used as an effective tool to reduce user anxiety and increase task performance

    Leveraging on Digital Signage Networks to Bring Connectivity IOT Devices

    The number of Internet-connected devices exceeds the world’s population by more than three times and this figure is expected to be doubled within the next five years. The Internet of Things is a concept that describes this trend and outlines certain aspects of design and functionality that new devices should incorporate for a successful integration into the Internet. In this respect, Digital Signage networks traditionally used for audiovisual media, accomplish many of the characteristics of the Internet of Things devices: interoperability, mobility, scalability and ubiquity, both in terms of access and control of devices and regarding the information they generate. This paper raises the power to employ a proposed Digital Signage network as a substrate to connect other types of devices that can benefit from the advantages of this kind of networks. For that aim, the main problems for this integration are discussed, mainly those related to the bidirectional tunneling scheme used in the proposed Digital Signage solution. The effects of this tunneling approach are analyzed in scenarios with bandwidth constraints, and different solutions are proposed. Tunneling performance in mobility is improved, to increase the amount of Internet of Things devices and applications that can benefit from this type of network. El número de dispositivos conectados a Internet supera actualmente a la población mundial por más de tres veces y se espera que esta cifra se duplique en los próximos cinco años. El Internet de las Cosas es un concepto que describe esta tendencia y perfila ciertos aspectos de diseño y funcionalidad que los nuevos dispositivos deben incorporar para lograr una integración exitosa en Internet. En este sentido, las redes digital signage utilizadas tradicionalmente para los medios de comunicación audiovisual cumplen muchas de las características requeridas en el contexto del Internet de las Cosas: interoperabilidad, movilidad, escalabilidad y ubicuidad; relativas tanto al acceso y control de dispositivos como a la información que estos generan. En este trabajo se plantea el poder de emplear la red digital signage propuesta como sustrato para poder conectar otros tipos de dispositivos para que así puedan aprovechar las ventajas de estas redes. Para ese fin, se discuten los principales problemas existentes en esta integración, prestando especial atención al esquema de túnel bidireccional utilizado en la solución digital signage propuesta. Los efectos de este enfoque de tunelación se analizan en escenarios con limitaciones de ancho de banda y se proponen diferentes soluciones. Con ello se consigue mejorar el rendimiento del túnel en movilidad, facilitando la integración de más dispositivos al Internet de las Cosas al permitir que puedan integrarse en este tipo de redes
