    To manipulate large payloads typical of space construction, the concept of a small arm mounted on the end of a large arm is introduced. The main purposes of such a configuration are to increase the structural stiffness of the robot by bracing against or locking to a stationary frame, and to maintain a firm position constraint between the robot's base and workpieces by grasping them. Possible topologies for a combination of disparate large and small arms are discussed, and kinematics, dynamics, controls, and coordination of the two arms, especially when they brace at the tip of the small arm, are developed. The feasibility and improvement in performance are verified, not only with analytical work and simulation results but also with experiments on the existing arrangement Robotic Arm Large and Flexible and Small Articulated Manipulator

    Real-time motion planning based vibration control of a macro-micro parallel manipulator system for super antenna

    A macro-micro manipulator (M3) system, composed of a rigid parallel manipulator serially mounted on a flexible cable suspended parallel manipulator, is used to precisely position the feed source of a super antenna. In order to reduce the impact of mechanical vibrations of the macro manipulator and achieve accurate positioning and orientating of the micro manipulator, a real-time motion planning based vibration control strategy is presented. This strategy comprises: (1) To determine the optimal position and orientation of the cable driven parallel manipulator, the real-time optimization is conducted according to the principle of uniform tension in the six driving cables; (2) Synchronized points and the “judge and wait” technique ensure the continuity and synchrony of the trajectory tracking of the two parallel manipulators; (3) The preadjustment of the micro parallel manipulator minimizes the drastic dynamical coupling as a result of its high-speed manipulation. Experimental results of the field model validate the high precision of the M3 system for super antenna when tracking a circular arc trajectory

    Topics in Machining with Industrial Robot Manipulators and Optimal Motion Control

    Two main topics are considered in this thesis: Machining with industrial robot manipulators and optimal motion control of robots and vehicles. The motivation for research on the first subject is the need for flexible and accurate production processes employing industrial robots as their main component. The challenge to overcome here is to achieve high-accuracy machining solutions, in spite of the strong process forces required for the task. Because of the process forces, the nonlinear dynamics of the manipulator, such as the joint compliance and backlash, may significantly degrade the achieved machining accuracy of the manufactured part. In this thesis, a macro/micro-manipulator configuration is considered to the purpose of increasing the milling accuracy. In particular, a model-based control architecture is developed for control of the macro/micro-manipulator setup. The considered approach is validated by experimental results from extensive milling experiments in aluminium and steel. Related to the problem of high-accuracy milling is the topic of robot modeling. To this purpose, two different approaches are considered; modeling of the quasi-static joint dynamics and dynamic compliance modeling. The first problem is approached by an identification method for determining the joint stiffness and backlash. The second problem is approached by using gray-box identification based on subspace-identification methods. Both identification algorithms are evaluated experimentally. Finally, online state estimation is considered as a means to determine the workspace position and orientation of the robot tool. Kalman Filters and Rao-Blackwellized Particle Filters are employed to the purpose of sensor fusion of internal robot measurements and measurements from an inertial measurement unit for estimation of the desired states. The approaches considered are fully implemented and evaluated on experimental data. The second part of the thesis discusses optimal motion control applied to robot manipulators and road vehicles. A control architecture for online control of a robot manipulator in high-performance path tracking is developed, and the architecture is evaluated in extensive simulations. The main characteristic of the control strategy is that it combines coordinated feedback control along both the tangential and transversal directions of the path; this separation is achieved in the framework of natural coordinates. One motivation for research on optimal control of road vehicles in time-critical maneuvers is the desire to develop improved vehicle-safety systems. In this thesis, a method for solving optimal maneuvering problems using nonlinear optimization is discussed. More specifically, vehicle and tire modeling and the optimization formulations required to get useful solutions to these problems are investigated. The considered method is evaluated on different combinations of chassis and tire models, in maneuvers under different road conditions, and for investigation of optimal maneuvers in systems for electronic stability control.     Hybrid intelligent machine systems : design, modeling and control

    To further improve performances of machine systems, mechatronics offers some opportunities. Traditionally, mechatronics deals with how to integrate mechanics and electronics without a systematic approach. This thesis generalizes the concept of mechatronics into a new concept called hybrid intelligent machine system. A hybrid intelligent machine system is a system where two or more elements combine to play at least one of the roles such as sensor, actuator, or control mechanism, and contribute to the system behaviour. The common feature with the hybrid intelligent machine system is thus the presence of two or more entities responsible for the system behaviour with each having its different strength complementary to the others. The hybrid intelligent machine system is further viewed from the system’s structure, behaviour, function, and principle, which has led to the distinction of (1) the hybrid actuation system, (2) the hybrid motion system (mechanism), and (3) the hybrid control system. This thesis describes a comprehensive study on three hybrid intelligent machine systems. In the case of the hybrid actuation system, the study has developed a control method for the “true” hybrid actuation configuration in which the constant velocity motor is not “mimicked” by the servomotor which is treated in literature. In the case of the hybrid motion system, the study has resulted in a novel mechanism structure based on the compliant mechanism which allows the micro- and macro-motions to be integrated within a common framework. It should be noted that the existing designs in literature all take a serial structure for micro- and macro-motions. In the case of hybrid control system, a novel family of control laws is developed, which is primarily based on the iterative learning of the previous driving torque (as a feedforward part) and various feedback control laws. This new family of control laws is rooted in the computer-torque-control (CTC) law with an off-line learned torque in replacement of an analytically formulated torque in the forward part of the CTC law. This thesis also presents the verification of these novel developments by both simulation and experiments. Simulation studies are presented for the hybrid actuation system and the hybrid motion system while experimental studies are carried out for the hybrid control system

    Fuzzy PD control of an optically guided long reach robot

    This thesis describes the investigation and development of a fuzzy controller for a manipulator with a single flexible link. The novelty of this research is due to the fact that the controller devised is suitable for flexible link manipulators with a round cross section. Previous research has concentrated on control of flexible slender structures that are relatively easier to model as the vibration effects of torsion can be ignored. Further novelty arises due to the fact that this is the first instance of the application of fuzzy control in the optical Tip Feedback Sensor (TFS) based configuration. A design methodology has been investigated to develop a fuzzy controller suitable for application in a safety critical environment such as the nuclear industry. This methodology provides justification for all the parameters of the fuzzy controller including membership fUllctions, inference and defuzzification techniques and the operators used in the algorithm. Using the novel modified phase plane method investigated in this thesis, it is shown that the derivation of complete, consistent and non-interactive rules can be achieved. This methodology was successfully applied to the derivation of fuzzy rules even when the arm was subjected to different payloads. The design approach, that targeted real-time embedded control applicat.ions from the outset, results in a controller implementation that is suitable for cheaper CPU constrained and memory challenged embedded processors. The controller comprises of a fuzzy supervisor that is used to alter the derivative term of a linear classical Proportional + Derivative (PD) controller. The derivative term is updated in relation to the measured tip error and its derivative obtained through the TFS based configuration. It is shown that by adding 'intelligence' to the control loop in this way, the performance envelope of the classical controller can be enhanced. A 128% increase in payload, 73.5% faster settling time and a reduction of steady state of over 50% is achieved using fuzzy control over its classical counterpart

    Minimum Jerk Trajectory Planning for Trajectory Constrained Redundant Robots

    In this dissertation, we develop an efficient method of generating minimal jerk trajectories for redundant robots in trajectory following problems. We show that high jerk is a local phenomenon, and therefore focus on optimizing regions of high jerk that occur when using traditional trajectory generation methods. The optimal trajectory is shown to be located on the foliation of self-motion manifolds, and this property is exploited to express the problem as a minimal dimension Bolza optimal control problem. A numerical algorithm based on ideas from pseudo-spectral optimization methods is proposed and applied to two example planar robot structures with two redundant degrees of freedom. When compared with existing trajectory generation methods, the proposed algorithm reduces the integral jerk of the examples by 75% and 13%. Peak jerk is reduced by 98% and 33%. Finally a real time controller is proposed to accurately track the planned trajectory given real-time measurements of the tool-tip\u27s following error

    Suppress vibration on robotic polishing with impedance matching

    Installing force-controlled end-effectors on the end of industrial robots has become the mainstream method for robot force control. Additionally, during the polishing process, contact force stability has an important impact on polishing quality. However, due to the difference between the robot structure and the force-controlled end-effector, in the polishing operation, direct force control will have impact during the transition from noncontact to contact between the tool and the workpiece. Although impedance control can solve this problem, industrial robots still produce vibrations with high inertia and low stiffness. Therefore, this research proposes an impedance matching control strategy based on traditional direct force control and impedance control methods to improve this problem. This method's primary purpose is to avoid force vibration in the contact phase and maintain force-tracking performance during the dynamic tracking phase. Simulation and experimental results show that this method can smoothly track the contact force and reduce vibration compared with traditional force control and impedance control
