    FPGA Implementation of Real-Time Compressive Sensing with Partial Fourier Dictionary

    This paper presents a novel real-time compressive sensing (CS) reconstruction which employs high density field-programmable gate array (FPGA) for hardware acceleration. Traditionally, CS can be implemented using a high-level computer language in a personal computer (PC) or multicore platforms, such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and Digital Signal Processors (DSPs). However, reconstruction algorithms are computing demanding and software implementation of these algorithms is extremely slow and power consuming. In this paper, the orthogonal matching pursuit (OMP) algorithm is refined to solve the sparse decomposition optimization for partial Fourier dictionary, which is always adopted in radar imaging and detection application. OMP reconstruction can be divided into two main stages: optimization which finds the closely correlated vectors and least square problem. For large scale dictionary, the implementation of correlation is time consuming since it often requires a large number of matrix multiplications. Also solving the least square problem always needs a scalable matrix decomposition operation. To solve these problems efficiently, the correlation optimization is implemented by fast Fourier transform (FFT) and the large scale least square problem is implemented by Conjugate Gradient (CG) technique, respectively. The proposed method is verified by FPGA (Xilinx Virtex-7 XC7VX690T) realization, revealing its effectiveness in real-time applications

    Mixed Compressive Sensing Back-Projection for SAR Focusing on Geocoded Grid

    This article presents a new scheme called 2-D mixed compressive sensing back-projection (CS-BP-2D), for synthetic aperture radar (SAR) imaging on a geocoded grid, in a single measurement vector frame. The back-projection linear operator is derived in matrix form and a patched-based approach is proposed for reducing the dimensions of the dictionary. Spatial compressibility of the radar image is exploited by constructing the sparsity basis using the back-projection focusing framework and fast solving the reconstruction problem through the orthogonal matching pursuit algorithm. An artifact reduction filter inspired by the synthetic point spread function is used in postprocessing. The results are validated for simulated and real-world SAR data. Sentinel-1 C-band raw data in both monostatic and space-borne transmitter/stationary receiver bistatic configurations are tested. We show that CS-BP-2D can focus both monostatic and bistatic SAR images, using fewer measurements than the classical approach, while preserving the amplitude, the phase, and the position of the targets. Furthermore, the SAR image quality is enhanced and also the storage burden is reduced by storing only the recovered complex-valued points and their corresponding locations

    Compressive Sensing, as an emerging technique in signal processing is reviewed in this paper together with its’ common applications. As an alternative to the traditional signal sampling, Compressive Sensing allows a new acquisition strategy with significantly reduced number of samples needed for accurate signal reconstruction. The basic ideas and motivation behind this approach are provided in the theoretical part of the paper. The commonly used algorithms for missing data reconstruction are presented. The Compressive Sensing applications have gained significant attention leading to an intensive growth of signal processing possibilities. Hence, some of the existing practical applications assuming different types of signals in real-world scenarios are described and analyzed as well

    Development of a Cost-Efficient Multi-Target Classification System Based on FMCW Radar for Security Gate Monitoring

    Radar systems have a long history. Like many other great inventions, the origin of radar systems lies in warfare. Only in the last decade, radar systems have found widespread civil use in industrial measurement scenarios and automotive safety applications. Due to their resilience against harsh environments, they are used instead of or in addition to optical or ultrasonic systems. Radar sensors hold excellent capabilities to estimate distance and motion accurately, penetrate non-metallic objects, and remain unaffected by weather conditions. These capabilities make these devices extremely flexible in their applications. Electromagnetic waves centered at frequencies around 24 GHz offer high precision target measurements, compact antenna, and circuitry design, and lower atmospheric absorption than higher frequency-based systems. This thesis studies non-cooperative automatic radar multi-target detection and classification. A prototype of a radar system with a new microwave-radar-based technique for short-range detection and classification of multiple human and vehicle targets passing through a road gate is presented. It allows identifying different types of targets, i.e., pedestrians, motorcycles, cars, and trucks. The developed system is based on a low-cost 24 GHz off-the-shelf FMCW radar, combined with an embedded Raspberry Pi PC for data acquisition and transmission to a remote processing PC, which takes care of detection and classification. This approach, which can find applications in both security and infrastructure surveillance, relies upon the processing of the scattered-field data acquired by the radar. The developed method is based on an ad-hoc processing chain to accomplish the automatic target recognition task, which consists of blocks performing clutter and leakage removal with a frame subtraction technique, clustering with a DBSCAN approach, tracking algorithm based on the \u3b1-\u3b2 filter to follow the targets during traversal, features extraction, and finally classification of targets with a classification scheme based on support vector machines. The approach is validated in real experimental scenarios, showing its capabilities incorrectly detecting multiple targets belonging to different classes (i.e., pedestrians, cars, motorcycles, and trucks). The approach has been validated with experimental data acquired in different scenarios, showing good identification capabilities
