Does Criticism Overcome the Praises of Journal Impact Factor?

    Get PDF
Journal impact factor (IF) as a gauge of influence and impact of a particular journal comparing with other journals in the same area of research, reports the mean number of citations to the published articles in particular journal. Although, IF attracts more attention and being used more frequently than other measures, it has been subjected to criticisms, which overcome the advantages of IF. Critically, extensive use of IF may result in destroying editorial and researchers’ behaviour, which could compromise the quality of scientific articles. Therefore, it is the time of the timeliness and importance of a new invention of journal ranking techniques beyond the journal impact factor

A sense of self-suspicion: global legal pluralism and the claim to legal authority

    Get PDF
Legal pluralism has become common currency in many contemporary debates on law and globalization. Its main claim is that a form of global legal pluralism represents both the most accurate description of law in times of globalization and the best normative option. On the descriptive level, global legal pluralism is considered more reliable than state-based accounts. On the normative level, global legal pluralism is understood as a possibility to open up the legal realm to previously unheard voices. This article assesses these claims against the background of classic legal-pluralist scholarship. After reconstructing the emergence of global legal pluralism and then examining its epistemic and normative versions, the last two sections identify the shortcoming of this approach by underlining the absence of what the authors call ‘a sense of self-suspicion’ in drawing the map of legalities in the global sphere. The main argument put forward is that global legal pluralism is oblivious of a few key insights offered by the founding fathers of classic legal pluralism

    Visibility and Citation Impact

    Get PDF
The number of publications is the first criteria for assessing a researcher output. However, the main measurement for author productivity is the number of citations, and citations are typically related to the paper's visibility. In this paper, the relationship between article visibility and the number of citations is investigated. A case study of two researchers who are using publication marketing tools confirmed that the article visibility will greatly improve the citation impact. Some strategies to make the publications available to a larger audience have been presented at the end of this paper

“Yes! I Had Cosmetic Surgery”: Celebrities\u27 Comsmetic Surgery Confessions in the Media and Their Impact on Korean Female College Students\u27 Perceptions.

This paper analyzes celebrities’ cosmetic surgery confessions in the media and explores the impact of the confessions on non-celebrities. Based on the analysis of talk shows and online news in Korea today, I argue that celebrities’ confessions are the result of the interaction between celebrities and the media, and the confessions serve as an atonement ritual to make a new start for celebrities themselves. The confessions also have the effect of trivializing cosmetic surgery. My analysis of Korean female college students’ self-accounts about the confessions confirms these arguments and shows the students’ strong endorsement of cosmetic surgery as well as their tendency to view cosmetic surgery as a means of upward mobility, given the success of surgical celebrities. The survey questionnaire developed for this study, completed by 217 female college students, reveals that more exposure to such confessions predicts greater normalization and trivialization of cosmetic surgery in the respondents’ everyday lives

The study on teacher talk has been considered as a crucial aspect in EFL classroom interactions due to it assists teachers to build interactive teaching-learning activities. The present study attempts to scrutinize talk types of an in-service teacher in an EFL classroom interaction based on the Foreign Language Interaction (FLINT) system proposed by Moskowitz (1971). It was conducted qualitatively through the lens of a case study by involving an experienced female EFL teacher at a senior high school level. The data were collected through several procedures consist of direct observation, audio recording, and interview section. The result disclosed that from 12 talk types in the FLINT system, 9 types were used by the teacher. One of them ‘praises or encourages’ took place as the highest type. It denoted that the teacher really appreciated the students’ effort to boost their learning motivation. Meanwhile, the least type used by the teacher was ‘criticizes student behavior’. According to the interview result, the teacher rarely used criticism because she tried to keep the students' feelings and mental. Thus, this study is expected to provide a new reference especially for EFL teachers as a consideration in using talk to get students’ attention and participation during the learning process

The Bloody Summer of 1863: How Memory and Commemoration have Shaped the History of the Battle of Gettysburg

    Get PDF
The Battle of Gettysburg often exists in the minds of the general public as the most significant battle of the American Civil War. However, at the same time, the battle over control of the Mississippi River was reaching its climax at Vicksburg, which often receives less attention. Despite the apparent significance of controlling the southern stronghold of Vicksburg, a majority of memory of the Civil War rests within the confines of the Battle of Gettysburg. Through the research of primary and secondary sources, I will establish the military history of the Battle of Gettysburg and the Siege of Vicksburg. I then look at the significance of memory construction amidst conflict and how it affects the immediate creation of history. I then examine how these battles have been commemorated and how these practices have changed over time. Through this analysis, I will develop a clearer understanding of the Battle of Gettysburg’s significance within the context of the American Civil War

The Economic Problem of Happiness. Keynes on Happiness and Economics

    Get PDF
In their latest book (2008), Bruno Frey and the members of the research group he chairs at the University of Zurich announce that happiness research is leading a revolution in economics. More precisely, the revolutionary character of happiness economics would draw on measurement, on how people value goods and social conditions, as well as on policies. This paper aims to discuss critically this claim and what we identified as five crucial issues of mainstream happiness economics, i.e.: 1. the ambiguous relationship between income and happiness, 2. the “back to Bentham” approach, 3. problems of incommensurability, 4. heterogeneity and multidimensionality, 5. the scope of economics in relation to happiness. In so doing, we attempt to review John Maynard Keynes’s vision about happiness and economics, starting from a revisiting of his essay Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren in the light of his early unpublished writings on ethics as well as of the whole bulk of his writings in economics. We then provide reasons to argue that the rediscovery of Keynes’s legacy in this respect can be of help to point out and examine the most controversial aspects of today’s happiness research.Happiness, Happiness economics, John Maynard Keynes, Economic Possibilities for Our Grandchildren
