    New Developments in Tourism and Hotel Demand Modeling and Forecasting

    Abstract Purpose The purpose of the study is to review recent studies published from 2007-2015 on tourism and hotel demand modeling and forecasting with a view to identifying the emerging topics and methods studied and to pointing future research directions in the field. Design/Methodology/approach Articles on tourism and hotel demand modeling and forecasting published in both science citation index (SCI) and social science citation index (SSCI) journals were identified and analyzed. Findings This review found that the studies focused on hotel demand are relatively less than those on tourism demand. It is also observed that more and more studies have moved away from the aggregate tourism demand analysis, while disaggregate markets and niche products have attracted increasing attention. Some studies have gone beyond neoclassical economic theory to seek additional explanations of the dynamics of tourism and hotel demand, such as environmental factors, tourist online behavior and consumer confidence indicators, among others. More sophisticated techniques such as nonlinear smooth transition regression, mixed-frequency modeling technique and nonparametric singular spectrum analysis have also been introduced to this research area. Research limitations/implications The main limitation of this review is that the articles included in this study only cover the English literature. Future review of this kind should also include articles published in other languages. The review provides a useful guide for researchers who are interested in future research on tourism and hotel demand modeling and forecasting. Practical implications This review provides important suggestions and recommendations for improving the efficiency of tourism and hospitality management practices. Originality/value The value of this review is that it identifies the current trends in tourism and hotel demand modeling and forecasting research and points out future research directions

    Minimization of Surface Roughness and Temperature during Turning of Aluminum 6061 Using Response Surface Methodology and Desirability Function Analysis

    Aluminum alloy is the second most abundant metal on Earth, known for its wide range of utilization in commercial goods due to its heat capacity and tensile strength. This study examines the effect of nose radius on the turning process. Further, it explores the implications of cutting parameters such as the cutting speed, the rate of feed, the cutting depth, and the nose radius of the tool. The trials were carried out with an Al 6061 workpiece and an Al2O3-coated carbide tool as the cutter, utilizing the response surface methodology. A mathematical model was developed to investigate the performance characteristics of the turning operation using the analysis of variance method. The multi-response desirability function analysis combines individual desirability values to create a composite desirability value. The ideal parameter levels were determined using the composite desirability value, and the significant influence of parameters was assessed. The obtained optimum surface roughness and temperature parameters are at a cutting speed of 116.37 m/min, a rate of feed of 0.408 mm/rev, a cutting depth of 0.538 mm, and a tool nose radius of 0.20 mm.     Research trends in customer churn prediction: A data mining approach

    This study aims to present a very recent literature review on customer churn prediction based on 40 relevant articles published between 2010 and June 2020. For searching the literature, the 40 most relevant articles according to Google Scholar ranking were selected and collected. Then, each of the articles were scrutinized according to six main dimensions: Reference; Areas of Research; Main Goal; Dataset; Techniques; outcomes. The research has proven that the most widely used data mining techniques are decision tree (DT), support vector machines (SVM) and Logistic Regression (LR). The process combined with the massive data accumulation in the telecom industry and the increasingly mature data mining technology motivates the development and application of customer churn model to predict the customer behavior. Therefore, the telecom company can effectively predict the churn of customers, and then avoid customer churn by taking measures such as reducing monthly fixed fees. The present literature review offers recent insights on customer churn prediction scientific literature, revealing research gaps, providing evidences on current trends and helping to understand how to develop accurate and efficient Marketing strategies. The most important finding is that artificial intelligence techniques are are obviously becoming more used in recent years for telecom customer churn prediction. Especially, artificial NN are outstandingly recognized as a competent prediction method. This is a relevant topic for journals related to other social sciences, such as Banking, and also telecom data make up an outstanding source for developing novel prediction modeling techniques.     In this competitive digital era with millions of products and services-based companies in the market, most of the businesses try hard to survive and gain a competitive advantage over others. Every company needs a marketing strategy which provides them an edge over other companies in the market. To have a strong edge over the other companies and to have a great marketing strategy it is essential for a product/services providing company to understand their customers and understand how they feel, think, reason, and select between different products and services available in the market. By better understanding its customers and their purchasing behavior, a company can increase its digital presence, improve user experiences, predict how customers will respond to its marketing strategies, retain loyal customers, develop/enhance marketing strategies to create new consuming markets, and increase sales revenue. The purpose of this research project is to investigate the buying behavior of mid-west tool manufacturing company’s customers to enable it to become one of the top brands in terms of providing woodworking plans and products in the market. The data analysis conducted on customer data collected through the company’s websites enabled understanding of the type of customers interested in buying its products, the kind of woodworking projects customers look for, the kind of tools and products (in terms of clamping, joining, routing, cutting, or measuring) they are interested in, the popular channels and sources directing customers to its websites, the type of customers who are likely to purchase its products and the factors contributing towards these consumer purchases. This research project also focusses on predicting whether a targeted customer will buy the company’s product or not if the company provides him/her with some special offers. Machine learning models were built using classification techniques: Logistic 8 Regression, Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, Decision Tree, Naïve Bayes, and Random Forest to predict customer purchases when given an offer and a comparison of these models was done to choose the best model to predict customer purchase behavior. Confusion matrices and prediction accuracy were used to evaluate the performance of the classifier on the test sample. The demographic variables such as age and annual salary played an important role in predicting whether the customer will buy a product or not if given an offer. The developed dashboards and models as part of this research project will enable the executives at mid-west tool manufacturing company to make informed decisions about the company’s future growth.     Bibliometric analysis of scientific production on methods to aid decision making in the last 40 years

    Purpose: Multicriteria methods have gained traction in both academia and industry practices for effective decision-making over the years. This bibliometric study aims to explore and provide an overview of research carried out on multicriteria methods, in its various aspects, over the past forty-four years. Design/Methodology/Approach: The Web of Science (WoS) and Scopus databases were searched for publications from January 1945 to April 29, 2021, on multicriteria methods in titles, abstracts, and keywords. The bibliographic data were analyzed using the R bibliometrix package. Findings: This bibliometric study asserts that 29,050 authors have produced 20,861 documents on the theme of multicriteria methods in 131 countries in the last forty-four years. Scientific production in this area grows at a rate of 13.88 per year. China is the leading country in publications with 14.14%; India with 10.76%; and Iran with 8.09%. Islamic Azad University leads others with 504 publications, followed by the Vilnius Gediminas Technical University with 456 and the National Institute of Technology with 336. As for journals, Expert Systems With Applications; Sustainability; and Journal of Cleaner Production are the leading journals, which account for more than 4.67% of all indexed literature. Furthermore, Zavadskas E. and Wang J have the highest publications in the multicriteria methods domain regarding the authors. Regarding the most commonly used multicriteria decision-making methods, AHP is the most favored approach among the ten countries with the most publications in this research area, followed by TOPSIS, VIKOR, PROMETHEE, and ANP. Practical implications: The bibliometric literature review method allows the researchers to explore the multicriteria research area more extensively than the traditional literature review method. It enables a large dataset of bibliographic records to be systematically analyzed through statistical measures, yielding informative insights. Originality/value: The usefulness of this bibliometric study is summed in presenting an overview of the topic of the multicriteria methods during the previous forty-four years, allowing other academics to use this research as a starting point for their research

    A Comprehensive Bibliometric Analysis on Social Network Anonymization: Current Approaches and Future Directions

    In recent decades, social network anonymization has become a crucial research field due to its pivotal role in preserving users' privacy. However, the high diversity of approaches introduced in relevant studies poses a challenge to gaining a profound understanding of the field. In response to this, the current study presents an exhaustive and well-structured bibliometric analysis of the social network anonymization field. To begin our research, related studies from the period of 2007-2022 were collected from the Scopus Database then pre-processed. Following this, the VOSviewer was used to visualize the network of authors' keywords. Subsequently, extensive statistical and network analyses were performed to identify the most prominent keywords and trending topics. Additionally, the application of co-word analysis through SciMAT and the Alluvial diagram allowed us to explore the themes of social network anonymization and scrutinize their evolution over time. These analyses culminated in an innovative taxonomy of the existing approaches and anticipation of potential trends in this domain. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first bibliometric analysis in the social network anonymization field, which offers a deeper understanding of the current state and an insightful roadmap for future research in this domain.Comment: 73 pages, 28 figure

    Uncertain Multi-Criteria Optimization Problems

    Most real-world search and optimization problems naturally involve multiple criteria as objectives. Generally, symmetry, asymmetry, and anti-symmetry are basic characteristics of binary relationships used when modeling optimization problems. Moreover, the notion of symmetry has appeared in many articles about uncertainty theories that are employed in multi-criteria problems. Different solutions may produce trade-offs (conflicting scenarios) among different objectives. A better solution with respect to one objective may compromise other objectives. There are various factors that need to be considered to address the problems in multidisciplinary research, which is critical for the overall sustainability of human development and activity. In this regard, in recent decades, decision-making theory has been the subject of intense research activities due to its wide applications in different areas. The decision-making theory approach has become an important means to provide real-time solutions to uncertainty problems. Theories such as probability theory, fuzzy set theory, type-2 fuzzy set theory, rough set, and uncertainty theory, available in the existing literature, deal with such uncertainties. Nevertheless, the uncertain multi-criteria characteristics in such problems have not yet been explored in depth, and there is much left to be achieved in this direction. Hence, different mathematical models of real-life multi-criteria optimization problems can be developed in various uncertain frameworks with special emphasis on optimization problems
