In the article an experimental power system consisting of Russian equipment, as well as 220 kV power line distance protection, are simulated in the RTDS Simulator. The settings were calculated and the polygonal characteristics of distance protection were constructed. A sequential installation of wind turbines into various nodes of the power system was carried out and the correct operation of the protection was verified. As a result of the study, the influence of wind turbines on the distance protection when they are connected between the protection installation site and the point of the short circuit is revealed. The analysis of this influence is made. Possible ways to solve the identified problems are proposed, such as the use of adaptive distance protection, as well as numerous studies of the behavior of wind turbines in various operating modes for further analysis and possible adjustment of guidelines for relay protection using new algorithms for calculating and configuring of distance protection. The results of this work can be used to improve and clarify the recommendations for tuning, produced by manufacturers of relay protection devices, which currently do not take into account the influence of wind turbines

Photovoltaic Modules: Effect of Tilt Angle on Soiling

abstract: Photovoltaic (PV) systems are one of the next generation's renewable energy sources for our world energy demand. PV modules are highly reliable. However, in polluted environments, over time, they will collect grime and dust. There are also limited field data studies about soiling losses on PV modules. The study showed how important it is to investigate the effect of tilt angle on soiling. The study includes two sets of mini-modules. Each set has 9 PV modules tilted at 0, 5, 10, 15, 20, 23, 30, 33 and 40°. The first set called "Cleaned" was cleaned every other day. The second set called "Soiled" was never cleaned after the first day. The short circuit current, a measure of irradiance, and module temperature was monitored and recorded every two minutes over three months (January-March 2011). The data were analyzed to investigate the effect of tilt angle on daily and monthly soiling, and hence transmitted solar insolation and energy production by PV modules. The study shows that during the period of January through March 2011 there was an average loss due to soiling of approximately 2.02% for 0° tilt angle. Modules at tilt anlges 23° and 33° also have some insolation losses but do not come close to the module at 0° tilt angle. Tilt anlge 23° has approximately 1.05% monthly insolation loss, and 33° tilt angle has an insolation loss of approximately 0.96%. The soiling effect is present at any tilt angle, but the magnitude is evident: the flatter the solar module is placed the more energy it will lose.Dissertation/ThesisM.S.Tech Engineering 201

Study of resonance in wind parks

    Get PDF
Wind turbine harmonic current emissions are a well-known power quality problem. These emissions flow through wind park impedances, leading to grid voltage distortion. Parallel resonance may worsen the problem because it increases voltage distortion around the resonance frequency. Hence, it is interesting to analyze the parallel resonance phenomenon. The paper explores this phenomenon in wind parks and provides analytical expressions to determine parallel resonances. (C) 2015 The Authors. Published by Elsevier B.V.Postprint (author's final draft

Dispersed storage and generation case studies

Three installations utilizing separate dispersed storage and generation (DSG) technologies were investigated. Each of the systems is described in costs and control. Selected institutional and environmental issues are discussed, including life cycle costs. No unresolved technical, environmental, or institutional problems were encountered in the installations. The wind and solar photovoltaic DSG were installed for test purposes, and appear to be presently uneconomical. However, a number of factors are decreasing the cost of DSG relative to conventional alternatives, and an increased DSG penetration level may be expected in the future

Concepts for design of an energy management system incorporating dispersed storage and generation

    Get PDF
New forms of generation based on renewable resources must be managed as part of existing power systems in order to be utilized with maximum effectiveness. Many of these generators are by their very nature dispersed or small, so that they will be connected to the distribution part of the power system. This situation poses new questions of control and protection, and the intermittent nature of some of the energy sources poses problems of scheduling and dispatch. Under the assumption that the general objectives of energy management will remain unchanged, the impact of dispersed storage and generation on some of the specific functions of power system control and its hardware are discussed
