Object Reconfiguration with Dextrous Robot Agents

    Get PDF
This paper addresses an object manipulation planning algorithm for dextrous robot systems consisting a multifingered hand and a robotic manipulator. A method has been developed for object reconfiguration design. The result is a new algorithm using artificial intelligence based on simulated annealing and A* search. The upper level of the manipulation system, the global planner generates the motion of the object. The lower level, the local planner deals with the motion of the agents relative to the object and the design of the contact forces. The local planner is based on simulated annealing, thus the the local minima can be avoided in the energy function of the motion with high probability. Application of the algorithm has been discussed for three robot arms

Dynamics, control and sensor issues pertinent to robotic hands for the EVA retriever system

    Get PDF
Basic dynamics, sensor, control, and related artificial intelligence issues pertinent to smart robotic hands for the Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) Retriever system are summarized and discussed. These smart hands are to be used as end effectors on arms attached to manned maneuvering units (MMU). The Retriever robotic systems comprised of MMU, arm and smart hands, are being developed to aid crewmen in the performance of routine EVA tasks including tool and object retrieval. The ultimate goal is to enhance the effectiveness of EVA crewmen

Stable Object Grasping With Dextrous Hand In Three-Dimension

This paper considers a grasp planning scheme for dextrous hands. The grasp is assumed to be a precise one, which means that only the fingertips of the hand are in contact. The most important algorithm of the grasp planner is the placement of contact points in the presence of friction. Based on a heuristic search, a number of grasp configurations are generated. A proposed method for evaluation of the configurations and determination whether a grasp is a force closure, is introduced. These algorithms are used in the experimental control system of an industrial robot, which the dextrous hand is attached to. A two-level robot programming language, which was written for the robot-hand system, is briefly introduced

Mechanical design optimization for multi-finger haptic devices applied to virtual grasping manipulation

    Get PDF
This paper describes the design of a modular multi-finger haptic device for virtual object manipulation. Mechanical structures are based on one module per finger and can be scaled up to three fingers. Mechanical configurations for two and three fingers are based on the use of one and two redundant axes, respectively. As demonstrated, redundant axes significantly increase workspace and prevent link collisions, which is their main asset with respect to other multi-finger haptic devices. The location of redundant axes and link dimensions have been optimized in order to guarantee a proper workspace, manipulability, force capability, and inertia for the device. The mechanical haptic device design and a thimble adaptable to different finger sizes have also been developed for virtual object manipulation

Practice of law in the provisioning of accessibility facilities for person with disabilities in Malaysia

Malaysia’s significant changes can be seen clearly through the improvement of social welfare of the disabled and people with disabilities. Although the governments has carried out various policies and provide facilities as well as provision for the disabled but there are still many obstacles encountered by people with disabilities, especially the legal and the accessibility of facilities and services. Therefore, this paper attempts to discuss the practice of law relating of legal procedure particularly for disabled users which affects the movement of these people from one destination to another. This paper discusses the practice of law adopted in the preparation of facilities for disabled people to help them make movement independently. The study was conducted by secondary data to the Malaysia legal and policies for disabled person by comparing with United Kingdom (UK). Malaysia has come out with a strong legal framework for disabled person through People with Disabilities Act 2008 (Act 685). There are several areas in the act that still can be improved to support disabled person

    Dexterous Hexrotor UAV Platform

Mobile manipulation is a hot area of study in robotics as it unites the two classes of robots: locomotors and manipulators. An emerging niche in the field of mobile manipulation is aerial mobile manipulation. Although there has been a fair amount of study of free-flying satellites with graspers, the more recent trend has been to outfit UAVs with graspers to assist various manipulation tasks. While this recent work has yielded impressive results, it is hampered by a lack of appropriate testbeds for aerial mobile manipulation, similar to the state of ground-based mobile manipulation a decade ago. Typical helicopters or quadrotors cannot instantaneously resist or apply an arbitrary force in the plane perpendicular to the rotor axis, which makes them inadequate for complex mobile manipulation tasks. Based on the concept of force closure (a term from the dexterous manipulation community), this thesis introduces the new type of dexterous, 6-DoF UAV which provides the unique capability of being able to resist any applied wrench, or generalized force-torque. In this thesis, we describe the importance of force closure for mobile manipulation, explain why it is lacking in current UAV platforms, and describe how our hexrotor provides this important capability as well as exhibiting holonomic behavior
