Affect and Metaphor Sensing in Virtual Drama
We report our developments on metaphor and affect sensing for several metaphorical language phenomena including affects as external entities metaphor, food metaphor, animal metaphor, size metaphor, and anger metaphor. The metaphor and affect sensing component has been embedded in a conversational intelligent agent interacting with human users under loose scenarios. Evaluation for the detection of several metaphorical language phenomena and affect is provided. Our paper contributes to the journal themes on believable virtual characters in real-time narrative environment, narrative in digital games and storytelling and educational gaming with social software

Olfaction-enhanced multimedia: Perspectives and challenges

Enhancing such applications with olfactory stimuli has the potential to create a more complexâand richerâuser multimedia experience, by heightening the sense of reality and diversifying user interaction modalities. Nonetheless, olfaction-enhanced multimedia still remains a challenging research area. More recently, however, there have been initial signs of olfactory-enhanced applications in multimedia, with olfaction being used towards a variety of goals, including notification alerts, enhancing the sense of reality in immersive applications, and branding, to name but a few. However, as the goal of a multimedia application is to inform and/or entertain users, achieving quality olfaction-enhanced multimedia applications from the usersâ perspective is vital to the success and continuity of these applications. Accordingly, in this paper we have focused on investigating the user perceived experience of olfaction-enhanced multimedia applications, with the aim of discovering the quality evaluation factors that are important from a userâs perspective of these applications, and consequently ensure the continued advancement and success of olfaction-enhanced multimedia applications

Responsible research and innovation in science education: insights from evaluating the impact of using digital media and arts-based methods on RRI values
The European Commission policy approach of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) is gaining momentum in European research planning and development as a strategy to align scientific and technological progress with socially desirable and acceptable ends. One of the RRI agendas is science education, aiming to foster future generations' acquisition of skills and values needed to engage in society responsibly. To this end, it is argued that RRI-based science education can benefit from more interdisciplinary methods such as those based on arts and digital technologies. However, the evidence existing on the impact of science education activities using digital media and arts-based methods on RRI values remains underexplored. This article comparatively reviews previous evidence on the evaluation of these activities, from primary to higher education, to examine whether and how RRI-related learning outcomes are evaluated and how these activities impact on students' learning. Forty academic publications were selected and its content analysed according to five RRI values: creative and critical thinking, engagement, inclusiveness, gender equality and integration of ethical issues. When evaluating the impact of digital and arts-based methods in science education activities, creative and critical thinking, engagement and partly inclusiveness are the RRI values mainly addressed. In contrast, gender equality and ethics integration are neglected. Digital-based methods seem to be more focused on students' questioning and inquiry skills, whereas those using arts often examine imagination, curiosity and autonomy. Differences in the evaluation focus between studies on digital media and those on arts partly explain differences in their impact on RRI values, but also result in non-documented outcomes and undermine their potential. Further developments in interdisciplinary approaches to science education following the RRI policy agenda should reinforce the design of the activities as well as procedural aspects of the evaluation research
Addressing Risk Challenges in a Changing Financial Environment:the Need for Greater Accountability in Financial Regulation and Risk Management
The need for continuous monitoring and regulation is particularly attributed to, and justified
by, the inevitable presence of risks and uncertainty â both in terms of certain externalities and
indeterminacies which are capable of being reasonably quantified and those which are not.
Amongst other goals, this paper aims to address complexities and challenges faced by
regulators in identifying and assessing risk, problems arising from different perceptions of
risk, and solutions aimed at countering problems of risk regulation. It will approach these
issues through an assessment of explanations put forward to justify the growing importance of
risks, well known risk theories such as cultural theory, risk society theory and
governmentality theory. âSocio culturalâ explanations which relate to how risk is increasingly
becoming embedded in organisations and institutions will also be considered as part of those
factors attributable to why the financial environment has become transformed to the state in
which it currently exists.
A consideration of regulatory developments which have contributed to a change in the way
financial regulation is carried out, as well as developments which have contributed to the de
formalisation of rules and a corresponding âloss of certaintyâ, will also constitute focal points
of the paper. To what extent are risks capable of being quantified? Who is able to assist with
such quantification â and why has it become necessary to introduce other regulatory actors
and greater measures aimed at fostering corporate governance and accountability into the
regulatory process? These questions constitute some of the issues which this paper aims to
address
