A Hybrid Intelligent System for Stamping Process Planning in Progressive Die Design

    Get PDF
This paper presents an intelligent, hybrid system for stamping process planning in progressive die design. The system combines the flexibility of blackboard architecture with case-based reasoning. The hybrid system has the advantage that it can use past knowledge and experience for case-based reasoning when it exists, and other reasoning approaches when it doesn’t exist. A prototype system has been implemented in CLIPS and interfaced with Solid Edge CAD system. An example is included to demonstrate the approach.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

A Case Study for Financial Feasibility of Automated Costing Support in A Small Machine Shop

    Get PDF
A knowledge-based cost estimating expert system is chosen by a Mexican machine shop. Differences between the traditional experience-based system employed and the automated system are studied. Data is gathered to analyze time effectiveness, accuracy and payback of the software. Data from seventy part models is recorded to study the time experiment, and data from fifty part models is used to study the accuracy and consistency. Data is analyzed by calculating mean, standard deviation, and test of hypothesis. The results indicate that the software is faster than the traditional quoting system; however, the payback point is high. Also, results show the software has a smaller average time-to-manufacture percentage difference between the automated system and the actual time-to-manufacture (TTM) compared to the percentage difference between the traditional’s TTM and actual TTMs, and this difference is statistically significant. The standard deviation for the automated system is also less implying better consistency

Arts Education in a Teacher Education Curriculum: A Model Based on Comparative Analysis of Arts Education Theories

In this study the historical role of the arts in America was briefly traced as well as the history of federal interest in the arts and arts education. The importance of arts education for the individual, the school, and society was stated. Four basic tenets of arts education were derived from research and literature which provided criteria for effective arts activities and strategies. These tenets suggest that arts education (1) should be based on experiential, discovery-based, process-oriented approaches; (2) should be viewed as a developmental activity; (3) should focus on the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of learning; and (4) should provide a perspective of the world. Pedagogical structures such as the single-art approach, the interdisciplinary approach, the integrative approach, and the magnet school approach were identified as well as the potential and value of community resources which are suggested as vital supplements to in-school instruction. There is a relative lack of arts experiences in teacher preparation situations and, even when present, such experiences often focus on the single-subject approach--not integration. The need for an arts education course for future teachers has been recognized and chapter four of the study contains strategies in creative movement, writing, art awareness activities, creative dramatics, and music which may be used for instruction of teacher preparation students in an arts education course which would focus upon the various theories, tenets, and research findings of the author. Arts education should be an integral component of any elementary curriculum and future teachers must have the opportunity to take a course in arts education in their teacher preparation studies. This course would be experiential, discovery-based, process-oriented, would enhance and enrich their educational opportunities, and would assist the students in an awareness of the three domains of learning. Finally, it would enrich the students\u27 perspectives regarding the value and worth of the arts education experience

There is a tendency toward automated production systems, trying to control every phase and improving the working and designing way of these facilities or tools. Among the manufacturing processes, one of the most important is metal forming by dies. Mainly, the design of dies is based in the tradition and empiricism of designers due to it involves various factors that hinder the systematization o these designs, such as:• The part to manufacture and presses available, whisch define die to design • The confluence of several technological factors • Many components of a die have to be manufactured specifically for each part. Others are standard, but their range is very wide. • Generally only one die is made for each part to be Progressive dies have an extra complexity, because they do many successive operations in each press stroke, which allows to make the parts in only one machine, optimizing the use of the resources. This thesis seeks to contribute to the systematization in progressive die design and incorporating advanced manufacturing technologies that facilitate and optimize the dies design

A Knowledge-Based Engineering System Framework for the Development of Electric Machines

The new concept industry 4.0 is a great opportunity to improve the competitiveness in a global market for small-medium size electric machinery companies. The demand for electric motors have increased in the last decade especially due to applications that try to make a full transition from fuel to electricity. These applications encounter the need for tailor-made motors that must meet demanding requirements. Therefore, it is mandatory small-medium companies adopt new technologies offering customized products fulfilling the customers’ requirements according to their investment capacity. Furthermore, simplify their development process as well as to reduce computational time to achieve a feasible design in shorter periods. In addition, find ways to retain know-how that is typically kept within each designer either to retrieve it or transfer it to new designers. To support the aforementioned issue, a knowledge-based engineering (KBE) system framework for the development of electric machines is devised. The framework is encapsulated in the so-called KBV2-model comprising the standardized macro-level framework for electrical machine and the knowledge base generation process. This thesis describes this model and the integration of KBE applications with current industrial technologies such as Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE), Product Lifecycle Management (PLM), multiphysics and analytical design tools. This architecture provides capability to manage and automate tasks in the development process of electric machines. The author of this work has opted to develop KBE applications following the minimum viable product principle. The KBE system framework herein presented is formalized through the experience and analysis of the development and implementation of the KBE applications. From which a guideline is provided following a sequential process in order to achieve a viable KBE system. To substantiate the process a KBE system is created that supports the development of electric motors for the elevator system industry

This book is dedicated to intelligent systems of broad-spectrum application, such as personal and social biosafety or use of intelligent sensory micro-nanosystems such as "e-nose", "e-tongue" and "e-eye". In addition to that, effective acquiring information, knowledge management and improved knowledge transfer in any media, as well as modeling its information content using meta-and hyper heuristics and semantic reasoning all benefit from the systems covered in this book. Intelligent systems can also be applied in education and generating the intelligent distributed eLearning architecture, as well as in a large number of technical fields, such as industrial design, manufacturing and utilization, e.g., in precision agriculture, cartography, electric power distribution systems, intelligent building management systems, drilling operations etc. Furthermore, decision making using fuzzy logic models, computational recognition of comprehension uncertainty and the joint synthesis of goals and means of intelligent behavior biosystems, as well as diagnostic and human support in the healthcare environment have also been made easier
