    Experiences on a motivational learning approach for robotics in undergraduate courses

    This paper presents an educational experience carried out in robotics undergraduate courses from two different degrees: Computer Science and Industrial Engineering, having students with diverse capabilities and motivations. The experience compares two learning strategies for the practical lessons of such courses: one relies on code snippets in Matlab to cope with typical robotic problems like robot motion, localization, and mapping, while the second strategy opts for using the ROS framework for the development of algorithms facing a competitive challenge, e.g. exploration algorithms. The obtained students’ opinions were instructive, reporting, for example, that although they consider harder to master ROS when compared to Matlab, it might be more useful in their (robotic related) professional careers, which enhanced their disposition to study it. They also considered that the challenge-exercises, in addition to motivate them, helped to develop their skills as engineers to a greater extent than the skeleton-code based ones.     This work has as proposal the introduction of new technologies when teaching engineering, namely to use interactive multimedia resources and mobile devices as assistance to fight the failure in school performance and to motive students to learn Structural Analysis I of the 3rd year of the Civil Engineering course in the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP).     The role of unit evaluation, learning and culture dimensions related to student cognitive style in hypermedia learning

    Recent developments in learning technologies such as hypermedia are\ud becoming widespread and offer significant contributions to improving the delivery\ud of learning and teaching materials. A key factor in the development of hypermedia\ud learning systems is cognitive style (CS) as it relates to users‟ information\ud processing habits, representing individual users‟ typical modes of perceiving,\ud thinking, remembering and problem solving.\ud \ud \ud \ud \ud A total of 97 students from Australian (45) and Malaysian (52) universities\ud participated in a survey. Five types of predictor variables were investigated with\ud the CS: (i) three learning dimensions; (ii) five culture dimensions; (iii) evaluation\ud of units; (iv) demographics of students; and (v) country in which students studied.\ud Both multiple regression models and tree-based regression were used to analyse\ud the direct effect of the five types of predictor variables, and the interactions within\ud each type of predictor variable. When comparing both models, tree-based\ud regression outperformed the generalized linear model in this study. The research\ud findings indicate that unit evaluation is the primary variable to determine students‟\ud CS. A secondary variable is learning dimension and, among the three dimensions,\ud only nonlinear learning and learner control dimensions have an effect on students‟\ud CS. The last variable is culture and, among the five culture dimensions, only\ud power distance, long term orientation, and individualism have effects on students‟\ud CS. Neither demographics nor country have an effect on students‟ CS.\ud These overall findings suggest that traditional unit evaluation, students‟\ud preference for learning dimensions (such as linear vs non-linear), level of learner\ud control and culture orientation must be taken into consideration in order to enrich\ud students‟ quality of education. This enrichment includes motivating students to\ud acquire subject matter through individualized instruction when designing,\ud developing and delivering educational resources

    Evolution of project-based learning in small groups in environmental engineering courses

    This work presents the assessment of the development and evolution of an active methodology (Project-Based Learning –PBL-) implemented on the course “Unit Operations in Environmental Engineering”, within the bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, with the purpose of decreasing the dropout rate in this course. After the initial design and implementation of this methodology during the first academic year (12/13), different modifications were adopted in the following ones (13-14, 14-15 & 15-16) in order to optimize the student’s and professor’s work load as well as correct some malfunctions observed in the initial design of the PBL. This active methodology seeks to make students the main architects of their own learning processes. Accordingly, they have to identify their learning needs, which is a highly motivating approach both for their curricular development and for attaining the required learning outcomes in this field of knowledge. The results obtained show that working in small teams (cooperative work) enhances each group member’s self–learning capabilities. Moreover, academic marks improve when compared to traditional learning methodologies. Nevertheless, the implementation of more active methodologies, such as project-based learning, in small groups has certain specific characteristics. In this case it has been implemented simultaneously in two different groups of 10 students each one.
