Investigating the adoption and use of smartphones in the UK : a silver-surfers perspective

However, not all members of society are accepting and using smart phones; more specifically, for this research study silver-surfers or older adults (50+) are a demographic group displaying such an attitude. Currently, there is minimal knowledge of the reasons for older adults adopting and using smartphones. Bearing this in mind, this research study aims to investigate the adoption and usage behaviours of silver-surfers. For this purpose, the conceptual framework applied to this research draws factors from the following theories: Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), the Diffusion of Innovations theory (DoI), and TAM3 (Technology Acceptance Model). From the online survey of 204 completed replies it was found that observability, compatibility, social influence, facilitating conditions, effort expectancy and enjoyment are important to the adoption and use of smartphones within silver-surfers. The contributions of this research are an identification and understanding of the factors that encourage or inhibit smartphone use within the older adult population. Second, this research can inform the design of computing devices and applications used for silver-surfers. The Impact of Experiential Augmented Reality Applications on Fashion Purchase Intention
Utilizing the stimulus-organism-response (SOR) model, the purpose of this study is to examine the effects of augmented reality (AR) (specifically augmentation) on consumersâ affective and behavioral response and to assess whether consumersâ hedonic motivation for shopping moderates this relationship. An experiment using the manipulation of AR and no AR was conducted with 162 participants aged between 18 and 35. Participants were recruited through snowball sampling and randomly assigned to the control or stimulus group. The hypothesized associations were analyzed using linear regression with bootstrapping. The paper demonstrates the benefit of using an experiential AR retail application (app) to positively impact purchase intention. The results show this effect is mediated by positive affective response. Furthermore, hedonic shopping motivation moderates the relationship between augmentation and the positive affective response. Because of the chosen research approach, the results may lack generalizability to other forms of augmentation. Therefore, researchers are encouraged to test the proposed model using different types of AR stimuli. Furthermore, replication of the study with other populations would increase the generalizability of the findings. Results of this study provide a valuable reference for retailers of the benefits of using AR when attempting to optimize experiential value in online environments. The study contributes to experiential retail and consumer purchase behavior research by deepening the conceptualization of the impact of experiential technologies, more specifically AR apps, by considering the role of hedonic shopping motivations.Peer reviewe
Developing the mUTAUT model â a mobile shopping perspective
Smartphones and tablets (mobile devices) worldwide usage has reached an all-time high, of which the services they provide to users are also increasing in popularity. While mobile banking and mobile payments are increasing in consumer adoption in the UK, mobile shopping (m-shopping) surprisingly remains an under-utilised commodity. Responding to the call for specific theoretical understanding in the mobile context, this study seeks to examine the factors influencing consumersâ mobile shopping (m-shopping) adoption intention, through development of the mUTAUT model, to incorporate more consumer-orientated constructs of innovativeness, risk and trust. The research model is tested using quantitative data (n = 435) and structural equation modelling analysis. Findings reveal performance expectancy, hedonic motivation, habit, risk and trust to be significant influencers of consumer m-shopping intention. Despite inclusion of three control variables of age, gender and experience, only age is found to have a partial moderating effect
The Mediation Effect of Trusting Beliefs on the Relationship Between Expectation-Confirmation and Satisfaction with the Usage of Online Product Recommendation
Online Product Recommendations (OPRs) are increasingly available to onlinecustomers as a value-added self-service in evaluating and choosing a product.Research has highlighted several advantages that customers can gain from usingOPRs. However, the realization of these advantages depends on whether and towhat extent customers embrace and fully utilise them. The relatively low OPR USAgerate indicates that customers have not yet developed trust in OPRs’ performance.Past studies also have established that satisfaction is a valid measure of systemperformance and a consistent significant determinant of users’ continuous systemusage. Therefore, this study aimed to examine the mediation effect of trustingbeliefs on the relationship between expectation-confirmation and satisfaction. Theproposed research model is tested using data collected via an online survey from626 existing users of OPRs. The empirical results revealed that social-psychologicalbeliefs (perceived confirmation and trust) are significant contributors to customersatisfaction with OPRs. Additionally, trusting beliefs partially mediate the impactof perceived confirmation on customer satisfaction. Moreover, this study validatesthe extensions of the interpersonal trust construct to trust in OPRs and examinesthe nomological validity of trust in terms of competence, benevolence, andintegrity. The findings provide a number of theoretical and practical implications. 
The Impact Of Technology Trust On The Acceptance Of Mobile Banking Technology Within Nigeria
With advancement in the use of information technology seen as a key factor in economic development, developed countries are increasingly reviewing traditional systems, in various sectors such as education, health, transport and finance, and identifying how they may be improved or replaced with automated systems. In this study, the authors examine the role of technology trust in the acceptance of mobile banking in Nigeria as the country attempts to transition into a cashless economy. For Nigeria, like many other countries, its economic growth is linked, at least in part, to its improvement in information technology infrastructure, as well as establishing secure, convenient and reliable payments systems. Utilising the Technology Acceptance Model, this study investigates causal relationships between technology trust and other factors influencing userâs intention to adopt technology; focusing on the impact of seven factors contributing to technology trust. Data from 1725 respondents was analysed using confirmatory factor analysis and the results showed that confidentiality, integrity, authentication, access control, best business practices and non-repudiation significantly influenced technology trust. Technology trust showed a direct significant influence on perceived ease of use and usefulness, a direct influence on intention to use as well as an indirect influence on intention to use through its impact on perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use. Furthermore, perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness showed significant influence on consumerâs intention to adopt the technology. With mobile banking being a key driver of Nigeriaâs cashless economy goals, this study provides quantitative knowledge regarding technology trust and adoption behaviour in Nigeria as well as significant insight on areas where policy makers and mobile banking vendors can focus strategies engineered to improve trust in mobile banking and increase user adoption of their technology
Critical review of the e-loyalty literature: a purchase-centred framework
Over the last few years, the concept of online loyalty has been examined extensively in the literature, and it remains a topic of constant inquiry for both academics and marketing managers. The tremendous development of the Internet for both marketing and e-commerce settings, in conjunction with the growing desire of consumers to purchase online, has promoted two main outcomes: (a) increasing numbers of Business-to-Customer companies running businesses online and (b) the development of a variety of different e-loyalty research models. However, current research lacks a systematic review of the literature that provides a general conceptual framework on e-loyalty, which would help managers to understand their customers better, to take advantage of industry-related factors, and to improve their service quality. The present study is an attempt to critically synthesize results from multiple empirical studies on e-loyalty. Our findings illustrate that 62 instruments for measuring e-loyalty are currently in use, influenced predominantly by Zeithaml et al. (J Marketing. 1996;60(2):31-46) and Oliver (1997; Satisfaction: a behavioral perspective on the consumer. New York: McGraw Hill). Additionally, we propose a new general conceptual framework, which leads to antecedents dividing e-loyalty on the basis of the action of purchase into pre-purchase, during-purchase and after-purchase factors. To conclude, a number of managerial implementations are suggested in order to help marketing managers increase their customersâ e-loyalty by making crucial changes in each purchase stage
An improved negative selection algorithm based on the hybridization of cuckoo search and differential evolution for anomaly detection
The biological immune system (BIS) is characterized by networks of cells, tissues, and
organs communicating and working in synchronization. It also has the ability to learn,
recognize, and remember, thus providing the solid foundation for the development
of Artificial Immune System (AIS). Since the emergence of AIS, it has proved itself
as an area of computational intelligence. Real-Valued Negative Selection Algorithm
with Variable-Sized Detectors (V-Detectors) is an offspring of AIS and demonstrated
its potentials in the field of anomaly detection. The V-Detectors algorithm depends
greatly on the random detectors generated in monitoring the status of a system.
These randomly generated detectors suffer from not been able to adequately cover
the non-self space, which diminishes the detection performance of the V-Detectors
algorithm. This research therefore proposed CSDE-V-Detectors which entail the
use of the hybridization of Cuckoo Search (CS) and Differential Evolution (DE) in
optimizing the random detectors of the V-Detectors. The DE is integrated with CS
at the population initialization by distributing the population linearly. This linear
distribution gives the population a unique, stable, and progressive distribution process.
Thus, each individual detector is characteristically different from the other detectors.
CSDE capabilities of global search, and use of LÂŽevy flight facilitates the effectiveness
of the detector set in the search space. In comparison with V-Detectors, cuckoo search,
differential evolution, support vector machine, artificial neural network, našıve bayes,
and k-NN, experimental results demonstrates that CSDE-V-Detectors outperforms
other algorithms with an average detection rate of 95:30% on all the datasets. This
signifies that CSDE-V-Detectors can efficiently attain highest detection rates and
lowest false alarm rates for anomaly detection. Thus, the optimization of the randomly
detectors of V-Detectors algorithm with CSDE is proficient and suitable for anomaly
detection tasks
Intention to Adopt E-Commerce: A Comparative Review Across Developed and Developing Economies
The purpose of this study is to conduct a comprehensive literature review of online purchase intention and present a comparative case between developed and developing economies over a 20-year period to reveal insightful implications for academia and industry. Online purchase intention refers to the intended behavior of an individual to buy a product or service from an online store. Prior research has failed to present a review that compares an individualâs online purchase intention across developed and developing economies in order to disclose the largest and smallest influencing factors, theories, and models in e-commerce. Our sample consists of 97 relevant articles focusing on online purchase intention retrieved from various quality databases, specifically from 53 peer-reviewed and validated journals. This research, in brief, will show different phases of analysis to better understand the current landscape of e-commerce behavioral intention and provide useful insights to researchers and professionals

The driving factors of continuance online shopping: Gender differences in behaviour among students in Saudi Arabia
This study proposes a revised technology acceptance model that integrates expectation confirmation theory to measure student gender differences with regard to continuance online shopping intentions in Saudi Arabia. The 234-respondent sample consists of 61.5% women and 38.5% men. A structural equation model confirms model fit.
Perceived usefulness, enjoyment, and subjective norms are determinants of online shopping continuance in Saudi Arabia. Both male and female groups are equivalent. The structural weights are also largely equivalent, but the regression paths from subjective norms to enjoyment and subjective norms to continuance intention (in the men sample) and perceived usefulness to continuous intention (in the women sample) are not supported.
The model was operationally generalized across the whole of Saudi Arabia. This research moves beyond online shopping intentions and includes factors affecting online shopping continuance. The research model explains 71% of the intention to continue shopping online.
This research suggests that online strategies cannot ignore either the direct or indirect gender differences on continuance intentions in Saudi Arabia. The model can be generalized across Saudi Arabia
Modelling and testing consumer trust dimensions in e-commerce
Prior research has found trust to play a significant role in shaping purchase intentions of a consumer. However there has been limited research where consumer trust dimensions have been empirically defined and tested. In this paper we empirically test a path model such that Internet vendors would have adequate solutions to increase trust. The path model presented in this paper measures the three main dimensions of trust, i.e. competence, integrity, and benevolence. And assesses the influence of overall trust of consumers. The paper also analyses how various sources of trust, i.e. consumer characteristics, firm characteristic, website infrastructure and interactions with consumers, influence dimensions of trust. The model is tested using 365 valid responses. Findings suggest that consumers with high overall trust demonstrate a higher intention to purchase online
