Enhanced Liposuction

Model Driven Robotic Assistance for Human-Robot Collaboration
While robots routinely perform complex assembly tasks in highly structured factory environments, it is challenging to apply completely autonomous robotic systems in less structured manipulation tasks, such as surgery and machine assembly/repair, due to the limitations of machine intelligence, sensor data interpretation and environment modeling. A practical, yet effective approach to accomplish these tasks is through human-robot collaboration, in which the human operator and the robot form a partnership and complement each other in performing a complex task. We recognize that humans excel at determining task goals and recognizing constraints, if given sufficient feedback about the interaction between the tool (e.g., end-effector of the robot) and the environment. Robots are precise, unaffected by fatigue and able to work in environments not suitable for humans.
We hypothesize that by providing the operator with adequate information about the task, through visual and force (haptic) feedback, the operator can: (1) define the task model, in terms of task goals and virtual fixture constraints through an interactive, or immersive augmented reality interface, and (2) have the robot actively assist the operator to enhance the execution time, quality and precision of the tasks. We validate our approaches through the implementations of both cooperative (i.e., hands-on) control and telerobotic systems, for image-guided robotic neurosurgery and telerobotic manipulation tasks for satellite servicing under significant time delay
Advanced Strategies for Robot Manipulators
Amongst the robotic systems, robot manipulators have proven themselves to be of increasing importance and are widely adopted to substitute for human in repetitive and/or hazardous tasks. Modern manipulators are designed complicatedly and need to do more precise, crucial and critical tasks. So, the simple traditional control methods cannot be efficient, and advanced control strategies with considering special constraints are needed to establish. In spite of the fact that groundbreaking researches have been carried out in this realm until now, there are still many novel aspects which have to be explored

Primate Ventromedial Prefrontal Cortex and the Physiological and Behavioural Dysfunction Characteristic of Mood and Anxiety Disorders
The heterogeneity intrinsic to the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (vmPFC) is evidenced in both its anatomy and implicated function: vmPFC subregions have roles in positive affect, negative affect and autonomic/endocrine regulation. Whether different subregions serve fundamentally different functions, or whether they perform similar computations on different inputs, remains unclear. Nevertheless, the role of the vmPFC in psychopathology is widely appreciated – in mood and anxiety disorders, over-activity within constituent regions of the vmPFC is consistently implicated in symptomatology, together with its normalisation following successful treatment. However, the precise locus of change varies between studies.
The work presented in this thesis investigates the causal contributions of over-activity within two key subregions of the vmPFC – the subgenual anterior cingulate cortex (sgACC, area 25) and perigenual anterior cingulate cortex (pgACC, area 32) – in discrete dimensions of behaviour and physiology affected in psychiatric disorders. Specifically, the impact of over-activity is assessed on (i) baseline physiological function; (ii) the regulation of anticipatory, motivational and consummatory aspects of reward-related behaviour; and (iii) negative affect including fear learning, stress recovery and the intolerance of uncertainty. To provide further insight into the mechanism of action of antidepressants, the efficacy of selected treatments is tested on changes induced by over-activity of these regions.
Beyond the direct relevance of the results presented here to psychiatric disorders and their treatment, the thesis aims to emphasise the importance of broader themes associated with the measurement and quantification of emotion in preclinical animal studies. First, a multi-faceted approach is utilised enabling quantification of both the autonomic and behavioural aspects of emotion. In so doing, the experiments maintain relevance to studies which assess these correlates in isolation, both in humans (which typically measure subjective responses and physiology) and in rodents (which frequently assess behaviour in isolation). The assessment of more than one dimension of emotion confers these studies with improved power to detect maladaptive changes. Second, the experiments described were conducted in the marmoset, a new-world primate. The extensive anatomical homology between marmoset and human prefrontal cortex facilitates the forward-translation of functional results. In combination with the appropriate assays, this renders marmosets as an invaluable species to study the causal contributions of vmPFC subregions to symptoms of psychiatric disorders.
I believe that the results of these experiments provide important insights into the causal role primate vmPFC has in relation to the behavioural and physiological aspects of psychiatric symptomatology. Most importantly, I hope that they serve as the foundation for future work to further elucidate the neuropathological processes underlying mental disorders.MRC DTP Studentshi
Textbook of Patient Safety and Clinical Risk Management
Implementing safety practices in healthcare saves lives and improves the quality of care: it is therefore vital to apply good clinical practices, such as the WHO surgical checklist, to adopt the most appropriate measures for the prevention of assistance-related risks, and to identify the potential ones using tools such as reporting & learning systems. The culture of safety in the care environment and of human factors influencing it should be developed from the beginning of medical studies and in the first years of professional practice, in order to have the maximum impact on clinicians' and nurses' behavior. Medical errors tend to vary with the level of proficiency and experience, and this must be taken into account in adverse events prevention. Human factors assume a decisive importance in resilient organizations, and an understanding of risk control and containment is fundamental for all medical and surgical specialties. The Ipn Regulates Anxiety Independently Of Drug Addiction

This work is devoted to better understanding how a component of one of the principle anatomical intersections of cognitive, emotional, and motivational signaling regulates anxiety and addiction. The majority of my work focused on the interpeduncular nucleus (IPN). The IPN and its principle source of afferent signals, the medial habenula (MHb), comprise a junction of signaling within the diencephalic conduction system (DDC). Along with the medial forebrain bundle, the DDC is a highly conserved pathway by which signals from the limbic forebrain reach the midbrain and hindbrain. Work in our lab and others has implicated the MHb-IPN axis in the aversive affective and somatic withdrawal syndrome that manifests following cessation of chronic exposure to habit-forming drugs, including alcohol, nicotine, and opioids. Given that functional role, I sought to establish if this pathway regulates affect independently of chronic drug exposure.
In addition to my primary work, additional experiments I performed contributed to the growing understanding of how this pathway functions within the context of addiction. In particular, I contributed to studies focused on how the presence of the α5 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor subunit (nAChRs) in the IPN and its neighboring structure, the ventral tegmental area (VTA), influences predispositions to alcohol and nicotine addictions in animal models.
Using in vivo chemogenetics, viral tracing and receptor subunit rescue, microdialysis, and behavioral analyses, I worked to evaluate how perturbations of signaling within the IPN or VTA affected mouse behavior.
Overall, I have found that the IPN does indeed regulate affect independently of chronic drug exposure, and that signaling via the α5 nAChR subunit within both the IPN and VTA significantly regulates drug-taking behavior
