    Architectures for smart end-user services in the power grid

    Abstract-The increase of distributed renewable electricity generators, such as solar cells and wind turbines, requires a new energy management system. These distributed generators introduce bidirectional energy flows in the low-voltage power grid, requiring novel coordination mechanisms to balance local supply and demand. Closed solutions exist for energy management on the level of individual homes. However, no service architectures have been defined that allow the growing number of end-users to interact with the other power consumers and generators and to get involved in more rational energy consumption patterns using intuitive applications. We therefore present a common service architecture that allows houses with renewable energy generation and smart energy devices to plug into a distributed energy management system, integrated with the public power grid. Next to the technical details, we focus on the usability aspects of the end-user applications in order to contribute to high service adoption and optimal user involvement. The presented architecture facilitates end-users to reduce net energy consumption, enables power grid providers to better balance supply and demand, and allows new actors to join with new services. We present a novel simulator that allows to evaluate both the power grid and data communication aspects, and illustrate a 22% reduction of the peak load by deploying a central coordinator inside the home gateway of an end-user

    REAL-TIME PREDICTIVE CONTROL OF CONNECTED VEHICLE POWERTRAINS FOR IMPROVED ENERGY EFFICIENCY

    The continued push for the reduction of energy consumption across the automotive vehicle fleet has led to widespread adoption of hybrid and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) by auto manufacturers. In addition, connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies have seen rapid development in recent years and bring with them the potential to significantly impact vehicle energy consumption. This dissertation studies predictive control methods for PHEV powertrains that are enabled by CAV technologies with the goal of reducing vehicle energy consumption. First, a real-time predictive powertrain controller for PHEV energy management is developed. This controller utilizes predictions of future vehicle velocity and power demand in order to optimize powersplit decisions of the vehicle. This predictive powertrain controller utilizes nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC) to perform this optimization while being cognizant of future vehicle behavior. Second, the developed NMPC powertrain controller is thoroughly evaluated both in simulation and real-time testing. The controller is assessed over a large number of standardized and real-world drive cycles in simulation in order to properly quantify the energy savings benefits of the controller. In addition, the NMPC powertrain controller is deployed onto a real-time rapid prototyping embedded controller installed in a test vehicle. Using this real-time testing setup, the developed NMPC powertrain controller is evaluated using on-road testing for both energy savings performance and real-time performance. Third, a real-time integrated predictive powertrain controller (IPPC) for a multi-mode PHEV is presented. Utilizing predictions of future vehicle behavior, an optimal mode path plan is computed in order to determine a mode command best suited to the future conditions. In addition, this optimal mode path planning controller is integrated with the NMPC powertrain controller to create a real-time integrated predictive powertrain controller that is capable of full supervisory control for a multi-mode PHEV. Fourth, the IPPC is evaluated in simulation testing across a range of standard and real-world drive cycles in order to quantify the energy savings of the controller. This analysis is comprised of the combined benefit of the NMPC powertrain controller and the optimal mode path planning controller. The IPPC is deployed onto a rapid prototyping embedded controller for real-time evaluation. Using the real-time implementation of the IPPC, on-road testing was performed to assess both energy benefits and real-time performance of the IPPC. Finally, as the controllers developed in this research were evaluated for a single vehicle platform, the applicability of these controllers to other platforms is discussed. Multiple cases are discussed on how both the NMPC powertrain controller and the optimal mode path planning controller can be applied to other vehicle platforms in order to broaden the scope of this research

    Adaptive energy management for hybrid power system considering fuel economy and battery longevity

    The adoption of hybrid powertrain technology brings a bright prospective to improve the economy and environmental friendliness of traditional oil-fueled automotive and solve the range anxiety problem of battery electric vehicle. However, the concern of the battery aging cost is the main reason that keeps plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEV) from being popular. To improve the total economy of PHEV, this paper proposes a win-win energy management strategy (EMS) for Engine-Battery-Supercapacitor hybrid powertrains to reduce energy consumption and battery degradation cost at the same time. First of all, a novel hierarchical optimization energy management framework is developed, where the power of internal combustion engine (ICE), battery and super capacitor (SC) can be gradationally scheduled. Then, an adaptive constraint updating rule is developed to improve vehicle efficiency and mitigate battery aging costs. Additionally, a control-oriented cost analyzing model is established to evaluate the total economy of PHEV. The quantified operation cost is further designed as a feedback signal to improve the performance of the power distribution algorithm. The performance of the proposed method is verified by Hardware-in-the-loop experiment. The results indicate that the developed EMS method coordinates the operation of ICE, driving motor (DM) and energy storage system effectively with the fuel cost and battery aging cost reduced by 6.1% and 28.6% respectively compared to traditional PHEV. Overall, the introduction of SC and the hierarchical energy management strategy improve the total economy of PHEV effectively. The results from this paper justify the effectiveness and economic performance of the proposed method as compared to conventional ones, which will further encourage the promotion of PHEVs.</p

    Assessment, design and control strategy development of a fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle for CSU's ecocar

    2013 Spring.Includes bibliographical references.Advanced automotive technology assessment and powertrain design are increasingly performed through modeling, simulation, and optimization. But technology assessments usually target many competing criteria making any individual optimization challenging and arbitrary. Further, independent design simulations and optimizations take considerable time to execute, and design constraints and objectives change throughout the design process. Changes in design considerations usually require re-processing of simulations and more time. In this thesis, these challenges are confronted through CSUs participation in the EcoCAR2 hybrid vehicle design competition. The complexity of the competition's design objectives leveraged development of a decision support system tool to aid in multi-criteria decision making across technologies and to perform powertrain optimization. To make the decision support system interactive, and bypass the problem of long simulation times, a new approach was taken. The result of this research is CSU's architecture selection and component sizing, which optimizes a composite objective function representing the competition score. The selected architecture is an electric vehicle with an onboard range extending hydrogen fuel cell system. The vehicle has a 145kW traction motor, 18.9kWh of lithium ion battery, a 15kW fuel cell system, and 5kg of hydrogen storage capacity. Finally, a control strategy was developed that improves the vehicles performance throughout the driving range under variable driving conditions. In conclusion, the design process used in this research is reviewed and evaluated against other common design methodologies. I conclude, through the highlighted case studies, that the approach is more comprehensive than other popular design methodologies and is likely to lead to a higher quality product. The upfront modeling work and decision support system formulation will pay off in superior and timely knowledge transfer and more informed design decisions. The hypothesis is supported by the three case studies examined in this thesis

    Execution of a Hybrid Vehicle Controls Development Effort Utilizing Model-Based Design, Hardware-in-the-loop Testing, Agile Scrum Methods and Requirements Engineering

    Modern hybrid vehicles require sophisticated supervisory control systems in order to realize competitive efficiency gains. Processes such as model-based design, HIL simulation and Agile Scrum methods can allow for quicker and less costly development of a complex product. The design of a supervisory control system for a prototype PHEV vehicle was executed with the intent of developing a mule vehicle into a 99% production ready vehicle. The control system design process was carried through from requirements definition to operating parameter optimization of utilizing model-based design, HIL simulation and the Scrum model. A prototype vehicle that has a fully functioning hybrid system with innovative propulsion control methods has been produced by this process

    Vehicle-to-grid regulation based on a dynamic simulation of mobility behavior

    This study establishes a new approach to analyzing the economic impacts of vehicle-to-grid (V2G) regulation by simulating the restrictions arising from un-predictable mobility requests by vehicle users. A case study for Germany using average daily values (in the following also called the "static" approach) and a dynamic simulation including different mobility use patterns are presented. Comparing the dynamic approach with the static approach reveals a significant difference in the power a vehicle can offer for regulation and provides insights into the necessary size of vehicle pools and the possible adaptations required in the regulation market to render V2G feasible. In a first step, the regulation of primary, secondary and tertiary control is ana-lyzed based on previous static methods used to investigate V2G and data from the four German regulation areas. It is shown that negative secondary control is economically the most beneficial for electric vehicles because it offers the high-est potential for charging with 'low-priced' energy from negative regulation. In a second step, a new method based on a Monte Carlo simulation using stochastic mobility behavior is applied to look at the negative secondary control market in more detail. Our simulation indicates that taking dynamic driving behavior into account results in a 40% reduction of the power available for regulation. Be-cause of the high value of power in the regulation market this finding has a strong impact on the resulting revenues. Further, we demonstrate that, for the data used, a pool size of 10,000 vehicles seems reasonable to balance the var-iation in driving behavior of each individual. In the case of the German regula-tion market, which uses monthly bids, a daily or hourly bid period is recom-mended. This adaptation would be necessary to provide individual regulation assuming that the vehicles are primarily used for mobility reasons and cannot deliver the same amount of power every hour of the week. --
