    A Survey on Communication Networks for Electric System Automation

Digital Object Identifier:10.1016/j.comnet.2006.01.005In today’s competitive electric utility marketplace, reliable and real-time information become the key factor for reliable delivery of power to the end-users, profitability of the electric utility and customer satisfaction. The operational and commercial demands of electric utilities require a high-performance data communication network that supports both existing functionalities and future operational requirements. In this respect, since such a communication network constitutes the core of the electric system automation applications, the design of a cost-effective and reliable network architecture is crucial. In this paper, the opportunities and challenges of a hybrid network architecture are discussed for electric system automation. More specifically, Internet based Virtual Private Networks, power line communications, satellite communications and wireless communications (wireless sensor networks, WiMAX and wireless mesh networks) are described in detail. The motivation of this paper is to provide a better understanding of the hybrid network architecture that can provide heterogeneous electric system automation application requirements. In this regard, our aim is to present a structured framework for electric utilities who plan to utilize new communication technologies for automation and hence, to make the decision making process more effective and direct.This work was supported by NEETRAC under Project #04-157

    Hybrid Satellite-Terrestrial Communication Networks for the Maritime Internet of Things: Key Technologies, Opportunities, and Challenges

    With the rapid development of marine activities, there has been an increasing number of maritime mobile terminals, as well as a growing demand for high-speed and ultra-reliable maritime communications to keep them connected. Traditionally, the maritime Internet of Things (IoT) is enabled by maritime satellites. However, satellites are seriously restricted by their high latency and relatively low data rate. As an alternative, shore & island-based base stations (BSs) can be built to extend the coverage of terrestrial networks using fourth-generation (4G), fifth-generation (5G), and beyond 5G services. Unmanned aerial vehicles can also be exploited to serve as aerial maritime BSs. Despite of all these approaches, there are still open issues for an efficient maritime communication network (MCN). For example, due to the complicated electromagnetic propagation environment, the limited geometrically available BS sites, and rigorous service demands from mission-critical applications, conventional communication and networking theories and methods should be tailored for maritime scenarios. Towards this end, we provide a survey on the demand for maritime communications, the state-of-the-art MCNs, and key technologies for enhancing transmission efficiency, extending network coverage, and provisioning maritime-specific services. Future challenges in developing an environment-aware, service-driven, and integrated satellite-air-ground MCN to be smart enough to utilize external auxiliary information, e.g., sea state and atmosphere conditions, are also discussed

    A Survey on Scheduling in IEEE 802.16 Mesh Mode

The standard mainly focuses on the MAC and PHY layer issues, supporting two transmission modes: PMP (Point-to-Multipoint) and mesh modes. Mesh mode is an optional mode developed as an extension to PMP mode and it has the advantage of having an improving performance as more subscribers are added to the system using multi-hop routes. In 802.16 MAC protocol, mesh mode slot allocation and reservation mechanisms are left open which makes this topic a hot research area. Hence, the focus of this survey will mostly be on the mesh mode, and the proposed scheduling algorithms and performance evaluation methods

    Towards Optimal Distributed Node Scheduling in a Multihop Wireless Network through Local Voting

    In a multihop wireless network, it is crucial but challenging to schedule transmissions in an efficient and fair manner. In this paper, a novel distributed node scheduling algorithm, called Local Voting, is proposed. This algorithm tries to semi-equalize the load (defined as the ratio of the queue length over the number of allocated slots) through slot reallocation based on local information exchange. The algorithm stems from the finding that the shortest delivery time or delay is obtained when the load is semi-equalized throughout the network. In addition, we prove that, with Local Voting, the network system converges asymptotically towards the optimal scheduling. Moreover, through extensive simulations, the performance of Local Voting is further investigated in comparison with several representative scheduling algorithms from the literature. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves better performance than the other distributed algorithms in terms of average delay, maximum delay, and fairness. Despite being distributed, the performance of Local Voting is also found to be very close to a centralized algorithm that is deemed to have the optimal performance

WiMAX structure is based on IEEE 802.16 OSI standard and defines the PMP (Point to Multipoint) and Mesh modes for transmission of information. To provide authentic services for voice, data and videos WiMAX define the various QoS parameters at Media Access Control (MAC) layer. In order to meet the QoS requirement Novel scheduling approach are required. In these papers efforts are made to examine and compare the various scheduling algorithm and its design challenges to implement the effective scheduling algorithm.     Scalability study of backhaul capacity sensitive network selection scheme in LTE-wifi HetNet

    Wireless Heterogeneous Network (HetNet) with small cells presents a new backhauling challenge which differs from those of experienced by conventional macro-cells. In practice, the choice of backhaul technology for these small cells whether fiber, xDSL, point–to-point and point-to-multipoint wireless, or multi-hop/mesh networks, is often governed by availability and cost, and not by required capacity. Therefore, the resulting backhaul capacity of the small cells in HetNet is likely to be non-uniform due to the mixture of backhaul technologies adopted. In such an environment, a question then arises whether a network selection strategy that considers the small cells’ backhaul capacity will improve the end users’ usage experience. In this paper, a novel Dynamic Backhaul Capacity Sensitive (DyBaCS) network selection schemes (NSS) is proposed and compared with two commonly used network NSSs, namely WiFi First (WF) and Physical Data Rate (PDR) in an LTE-WiFi HetNet environment. The proposed scheme is evaluated in terms of average connection or user throughput1and fairness among users. The effects of varying WiFi backhaul capacity (uniform and non-uniform distribution), WiFi-LTE coverage ratio, user density and WiFi access points (APs) density within the HetNet form the focus of this paper. Results show that the DyBaCS scheme generally provides superior fairness and user throughput performance across the range of backhaul capacity considered. Besides, DyBaCS is able to scale much better than WF and PDR across different user and WiFi densities

    Joint Concurrent Routing and Multi-Pointer Packet Scheduling in IEEE 802.16 Mesh Networks

    IEEE 802.16, also known as Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX), is a standardization effort carried out by the IEEE to provide last-mile broadband access to end users. The IEEE 802.16 standard supports two medium access control (MAC) modes - a mandatory point to multipoint (PMP) mode and an optional mesh mode. In this paper, we propose an asymmetric interference aware routing algorithm and a new multipointer approach in implementing scheduling algorithms for IEEE 802.16 mesh networks. We modify three different centralized scheduling algorithms, fixed scheduling, ordered scheduling and per-slot scheduling using multipointer approach to allow for spatial reuse (SR) in IEEE 802.16 mesh networks. Simulation results reveal that fixed scheduling with SR provides the best performance

    Downlink resource auction in a tree topology structured wireless mesh network

    We analyze the problem of downlink resource allocation in a non-cooperative multi-level tree topology structured wireless mesh network in which a selfish mesh router (MR) may refuse to relay other MRs' traffic so as to improve its own performance at the cost of overall system performance. Based on game theory, we propose an auction framework, where the parent MR serves as the auctioneer while its children MRs act as bidders and compete for time-slots. We derive a payment function from radio resource used for relaying traffic instead of money, so as to simplify the implementation and avoid the possible security problems from monetary payment. We prove the existence and uniqueness of Nash Equilibrium and propose a stochastic best response updating algorithm to allow the bids to iteratively converge to NE in a practical distributed fashion. Simulation results show the proposed auction algorithm greatly outperforms traditional algorithms in non-cooperative environments. © 2010 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Subcarrier and Power Allocation in WiMAX

    Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access (WiMAX) is one of the latest technologies for providing Broadband Wireless Access (BWA) in a metropolitan area. The use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmissions has been proposed in WiMAX to mitigate the complications which are associated with frequency selective channels. In addition, the multiple access is achieved by using orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) scheme which has several advantages such as flexible resource allocation, relatively simple transceivers, and high spectrum efficient. In OFDMA the controllable resources are the subcarriers and the allocated power per subband. Moreover, adaptive subcarrier and power allocation techniques have been selected to exploit the natural multiuser diversity. This leads to an improvement of the performance by assigning the proper subcarriers to the user according to their channel quality and the power is allocated based on water-filling algorithm. One simple method is to allocate subcarriers and powers equally likely between all users. It is well known that this method reduces the spectral efficiency of the system, hence, it is not preferred unless in some applications. In order to handle the spectral efficiency problem, in this thesis we discuss three novel resources allocation algorithms for the downlink of a multiuser OFDM system and analyze the algorithm performances based on capacity and fairness measurement.
