    HopScotch - a low-power renewable energy base station network for rural broadband access

    The provision of adequate broadband access to communities in sparsely populated rural areas has in the past been severely restricted. In this paper, we present a wireless broadband access test bed running in the Scottish Highlands and Islands which is based on a relay network of low-power base stations. Base stations are powered by a combination of renewable sources creating a low cost and scalable solution suitable for community ownership. The use of the 5~GHz bands allows the network to offer large data rates and the testing of ultra high frequency ``white space'' bands allow expansive coverage whilst reducing the number of base stations or required transmission power. We argue that the reliance on renewable power and the intelligent use of frequency bands makes this approach an economic green radio technology which can address the problem of rural broadband access

    Reducing Congestion Effects by Multipath Routing in Wireless Networks

    We propose a solution to improve fairness and increasethroughput in wireless networks with location information.Our approach consists of a multipath routing protocol, BiasedGeographical Routing (BGR), and two congestion controlalgorithms, In-Network Packet Scatter (IPS) and End-to-EndPacket Scatter (EPS), which leverage BGR to avoid the congestedareas of the network. BGR achieves good performancewhile incurring a communication overhead of just 1 byte perdata packet, and has a computational complexity similar togreedy geographic routing. IPS alleviates transient congestion bysplitting traffic immediately before the congested areas. In contrast,EPS alleviates long term congestion by splitting the flow atthe source, and performing rate control. EPS selects the pathsdynamically, and uses a less aggressive congestion controlmechanism on non-greedy paths to improve energy efficiency.Simulation and experimental results show that our solutionachieves its objectives. Extensive ns-2 simulations show that oursolution improves both fairness and throughput as compared tosingle path greedy routing. Our solution reduces the variance ofthroughput across all flows by 35%, reduction which is mainlyachieved by increasing throughput of long-range flows witharound 70%. Furthermore, overall network throughput increasesby approximately 10%. Experimental results on a 50-node testbed are consistent with our simulation results, suggestingthat BGR is effective in practice

    PEER Testbed Study on a Laboratory Building: Exercising Seismic Performance Assessment

    From 2002 to 2004 (years five and six of a ten-year funding cycle), the PEER Center organized the majority of its research around six testbeds. Two buildings and two bridges, a campus, and a transportation network were selected as case studies to “exercise” the PEER performance-based earthquake engineering methodology. All projects involved interdisciplinary teams of researchers, each producing data to be used by other colleagues in their research. The testbeds demonstrated that it is possible to create the data necessary to populate the PEER performancebased framing equation, linking the hazard analysis, the structural analysis, the development of damage measures, loss analysis, and decision variables. This report describes one of the building testbeds—the UC Science Building. The project was chosen to focus attention on the consequences of losses of laboratory contents, particularly downtime. The UC Science testbed evaluated the earthquake hazard and the structural performance of a well-designed recently built reinforced concrete laboratory building using the OpenSees platform. Researchers conducted shake table tests on samples of critical laboratory contents in order to develop fragility curves used to analyze the probability of losses based on equipment failure. The UC Science testbed undertook an extreme case in performance assessment—linking performance of contents to operational failure. The research shows the interdependence of building structure, systems, and contents in performance assessment, and highlights where further research is needed. The Executive Summary provides a short description of the overall testbed research program, while the main body of the report includes summary chapters from individual researchers.     Is There Light at the Ends of the Tunnel? Wireless Sensor Networks for Adaptive Lighting in Road Tunnels

    Existing deployments of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are often conceived as stand-alone monitoring tools. In this paper, we report instead on a deployment where the WSN is a key component of a closed-loop control system for adaptive lighting in operational road tunnels. WSN nodes along the tunnel walls report light readings to a control station, which closes the loop by setting the intensity of lamps to match a legislated curve. The ability to match dynamically the lighting levels to the actual environmental conditions improves the tunnel safety and reduces its power consumption. The use of WSNs in a closed-loop system, combined with the real-world, harsh setting of operational road tunnels, induces tighter requirements on the quality and timeliness of sensed data, as well as on the reliability and lifetime of the network. In this work, we test to what extent mainstream WSN technology meets these challenges, using a dedicated design that however relies on wellestablished techniques.     Surrogate modeling based cognitive decision engine for optimization of WLAN performance

    Due to the rapid growth of wireless networks and the dearth of the electromagnetic spectrum, more interference is imposed to the wireless terminals which constrains their performance. In order to mitigate such performance degradation, this paper proposes a novel experimentally verified surrogate model based cognitive decision engine which aims at performance optimization of IEEE 802.11 links. The surrogate model takes the current state and configuration of the network as input and makes a prediction of the QoS parameter that would assist the decision engine to steer the network towards the optimal configuration. The decision engine was applied in two realistic interference scenarios where in both cases, utilization of the cognitive decision engine significantly outperformed the case where the decision engine was not deployed

    Building an Emulation Environment for Cyber Security Analyses of Complex Networked Systems

    Computer networks are undergoing a phenomenal growth, driven by the rapidly increasing number of nodes constituting the networks. At the same time, the number of security threats on Internet and intranet networks is constantly growing, and the testing and experimentation of cyber defense solutions requires the availability of separate, test environments that best emulate the complexity of a real system. Such environments support the deployment and monitoring of complex mission-driven network scenarios, thus enabling the study of cyber defense strategies under real and controllable traffic and attack scenarios. In this paper, we propose a methodology that makes use of a combination of techniques of network and security assessment, and the use of cloud technologies to build an emulation environment with adjustable degree of affinity with respect to actual reference networks or planned systems. As a byproduct, starting from a specific study case, we collected a dataset consisting of complete network traces comprising benign and malicious traffic, which is feature-rich and publicly available
