    Multi-Scale Attention Networks for Pavement Defect Detection

    Pavement defects such as cracks, net cracks, and pit slots can cause potential traffic safety problems. The timely detection and identification play a key role in reducing the harm of various pavement defects. Particularly, the recent development in deep learning-based CNNs has shown competitive performance in image detection and classification. To detect pavement defects automatically and improve effects, a multi-scale mobile attention-based network, which we termed MANet, is proposed to perform the detection of pavement defects. The architecture of the encoder-decoder is used in MANet, where the encoder adopts the MobileNet as the backbone network to extract pavement defect features. Instead of the original 3×3 convolution, the multi-scale convolution kernels are utilized in depth-wise separable convolution layers of the network. Further, the hybrid attention mechanism is separately incorporated into the encoder and decoder modules to infer the significance of spatial points and inter-channel relationship features for the input intermediate feature maps. The proposed approach achieves state-of-the-art performance on two publicly-available benchmark datasets, i.e., the Crack500 (500 crack images with 2,000×1,500 pixels) and CFD (118 crack images with 480×320 pixels) datasets. The mean intersection over union ( MIoU ) of the proposed approach on these two datasets reaches 0.7219 and 0.7788, respectively. Ablation experiments show that the multi-scale convolution and hybrid attention modules can effectively help the model extract high-level feature representations and generate more accurate pavement crack segmentation results. We further test the model on locally collected pavement crack images (131 images with 1024×768 pixels) and it achieves a satisfactory result. The proposed approach realizes the MIoU of 0.6514 on the local dataset and outperforms other compared baseline methods. Experimental findings demonstrate the validity and feasibility of the proposed approach and it provides a viable solution for pavement crack detection in practical application scenarios.     Advancing Land Cover Mapping in Remote Sensing with Deep Learning

    Automatic mapping of land cover in remote sensing data plays an increasingly significant role in several earth observation (EO) applications, such as sustainable development, autonomous agriculture, and urban planning. Due to the complexity of the real ground surface and environment, accurate classification of land cover types is facing many challenges. This thesis provides novel deep learning-based solutions to land cover mapping challenges such as how to deal with intricate objects and imbalanced classes in multi-spectral and high-spatial resolution remote sensing data. The first work presents a novel model to learn richer multi-scale and global contextual representations in very high-resolution remote sensing images, namely the dense dilated convolutions' merging (DDCM) network. The proposed method is light-weighted, flexible and extendable, so that it can be used as a simple yet effective encoder and decoder module to address different classification and semantic mapping challenges. Intensive experiments on different benchmark remote sensing datasets demonstrate that the proposed method can achieve better performance but consume much fewer computation resources compared with other published methods. Next, a novel graph model is developed for capturing long-range pixel dependencies in remote sensing images to improve land cover mapping. One key component in the method is the self-constructing graph (SCG) module that can effectively construct global context relations (latent graph structure) without requiring prior knowledge graphs. The proposed SCG-based models achieved competitive performance on different representative remote sensing datasets with faster training and lower computational cost compared to strong baseline models. The third work introduces a new framework, namely the multi-view self-constructing graph (MSCG) network, to extend the vanilla SCG model to be able to capture multi-view context representations with rotation invariance to achieve improved segmentation performance. Meanwhile, a novel adaptive class weighting loss function is developed to alleviate the issue of class imbalance commonly found in EO datasets for semantic segmentation. Experiments on benchmark data demonstrate the proposed framework is computationally efficient and robust to produce improved segmentation results for imbalanced classes. To address the key challenges in multi-modal land cover mapping of remote sensing data, namely, 'what', 'how' and 'where' to effectively fuse multi-source features and to efficiently learn optimal joint representations of different modalities, the last work presents a compact and scalable multi-modal deep learning framework (MultiModNet) based on two novel modules: the pyramid attention fusion module and the gated fusion unit. The proposed MultiModNet outperforms the strong baselines on two representative remote sensing datasets with fewer parameters and at a lower computational cost. Extensive ablation studies also validate the effectiveness and flexibility of the framework

    Adaptive spatial image steganography and steganalysis using perceptual modelling and machine learning

    Image steganography is a method for communicating secret messages under the cover images. A sender will embed the secret messages into the cover images according to an algorithm, and then the resulting image will be sent to the receiver. The receiver can extract the secret messages with the predefined algorithm. To counter this kind of technique, image steganalysis is proposed to detect the presence of secret messages. After many years of development, current image steganography uses the adaptive algorithm for embedding the secrets, which automatically finds the complex area in the cover source to avoid being noticed. Meanwhile, image steganalysis has also been advanced to universal steganalysis, which does not require the knowledge of the steganographic algorithm. With the development of the computational hardware, i.e., Graphical Processing Units (GPUs), some computational expensive techniques are now available, i.e., Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs), which bring a large improvement in the detection tasks in image steganalysis. To defend against the attacks, new techniques are also being developed to improve the security of image steganography, these include designing more scientific cost functions, the key in adaptive steganography, and generating stego images from the knowledge of the CNNs. Several contributions are made for both image steganography and steganalysis in this thesis. Firstly, inspired by the Ranking Priority Profile (RPP), a new cost function for adaptive image steganography is proposed, which uses the two-dimensional Singular Spectrum Analysis (2D-SSA) and Weighted Median Filter (WMF) in the design. The RPP mainly includes three rules, i.e., the Complexity-First rule, the Clustering rule and the Spreading rule, to design a cost function. The 2D-SSA is employed in selecting the key components and clustering the embedding positions, which follows the Complexity-First rule and the Clustering rule. Also, the Spreading rule is followed to smooth the resulting image produced by 2D-SSA with WMF. The proposed algorithm has improved performance over four benchmarking approaches against non-shared selection channel attacks. It also provides comparable performance in selection-channel-aware scenarios, where the best results are observed when the relative payload is 0.3 bpp or larger. The approach is much faster than other model-based methods. Secondly, for image steganalysis, to tackle more complex datasets that are close to the real scenarios and to push image steganalysis further to real-life applications, an Enhanced Residual Network with self-attention ability, i.e., ERANet, is proposed. By employing a more mathematically sophisticated way to extract more effective features in the images and the global self-Attention technique, the ERANet can further capture the stego signal in the deeper layers, hence it is suitable for the more complex situations in the new datasets. The proposed Enhanced Low-Level Feature Representation Module can be easily mounted on other CNNs in selecting the most representative features. Although it comes with a slightly extra computational cost, comprehensive experiments on the BOSSbase and ALASKA#2 datasets have demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed methodology. Lastly, for image steganography, with the knowledge from the CNNs, a novel postcost-optimization algorithm is proposed. Without modifying the original stego image and the original cost function of the steganography, and no need for training a Generative Adversarial Network (GAN), the proposed method mainly uses the gradient maps from a well-trained CNN to represent the cost, where the original cost map of the steganography is adopted to indicate the embedding positions. This method will smooth the gradient maps before adjusting the cost, which solves the boundary problem of the CNNs having multiple subnets. Extensive experiments have been carried out to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method, which provides state-of-the-art performance. In addition, compared to existing work, the proposed method is effcient in computing time as well. In short, this thesis has made three major contributions to image steganography and steganalysis by using perceptual modelling and machine learning.     Collision Avoidance on Unmanned Aerial Vehicles using Deep Neural Networks

    Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs), although hardly a new technology, have recently gained a prominent role in many industries, being widely used not only among enthusiastic consumers but also in high demanding professional situations, and will have a massive societal impact over the coming years. However, the operation of UAVs is full of serious safety risks, such as collisions with dynamic obstacles (birds, other UAVs, or randomly thrown objects). These collision scenarios are complex to analyze in real-time, sometimes being computationally impossible to solve with existing State of the Art (SoA) algorithms, making the use of UAVs an operational hazard and therefore significantly reducing their commercial applicability in urban environments. In this work, a conceptual framework for both stand-alone and swarm (networked) UAVs is introduced, focusing on the architectural requirements of the collision avoidance subsystem to achieve acceptable levels of safety and reliability. First, the SoA principles for collision avoidance against stationary objects are reviewed. Afterward, a novel image processing approach that uses deep learning and optical flow is presented. This approach is capable of detecting and generating escape trajectories against potential collisions with dynamic objects. Finally, novel models and algorithms combinations were tested, providing a new approach for the collision avoidance of UAVs using Deep Neural Networks. The feasibility of the proposed approach was demonstrated through experimental tests using a UAV, created from scratch using the framework developed.Os veículos aéreos não tripulados (VANTs), embora dificilmente considerados uma nova tecnologia, ganharam recentemente um papel de destaque em muitas indústrias, sendo amplamente utilizados não apenas por amadores, mas também em situações profissionais de alta exigência, sendo expectável um impacto social massivo nos próximos anos. No entanto, a operação de VANTs está repleta de sérios riscos de segurança, como colisões com obstáculos dinâmicos (pássaros, outros VANTs ou objetos arremessados). Estes cenários de colisão são complexos para analisar em tempo real, às vezes sendo computacionalmente impossível de resolver com os algoritmos existentes, tornando o uso de VANTs um risco operacional e, portanto, reduzindo significativamente a sua aplicabilidade comercial em ambientes citadinos. Neste trabalho, uma arquitectura conceptual para VANTs autônomos e em rede é apresentada, com foco nos requisitos arquitetônicos do subsistema de prevenção de colisão para atingir níveis aceitáveis de segurança e confiabilidade. Os estudos presentes na literatura para prevenção de colisão contra objectos estacionários são revistos e uma nova abordagem é descrita. Esta tecnica usa técnicas de aprendizagem profunda e processamento de imagem, para realizar a prevenção de colisões em tempo real com objetos móveis. Por fim, novos modelos e combinações de algoritmos são propostos, fornecendo uma nova abordagem para evitar colisões de VANTs usando Redes Neurais Profundas. A viabilidade da abordagem foi demonstrada através de testes experimentais utilizando um VANT, desenvolvido a partir da arquitectura apresentada

    Automatic identification of ischemia using lightweight attention network in PET cardiac perfusion imaging

    Ischemic disease, caused by inadequate blood supply to organs or tissues, poses a significant global health challenge. Early detection of ischemia is crucial for timely intervention and improved patient outcomes. Myocardial perfusion imaging with positron-emission tomography (PET) is a non-invasive technique used to identify ischemia. However, accurately interpreting PET images can be challenging, necessitating the development of reliable classification methods. In this study, we propose a novel approach using MS-DenseNet, a lightweight attention network, for the detection and classification of ischemia from myocardial polar maps. Our model incorporates the squeeze and excitation modules to emphasize relevant feature channels and suppress unnecessary ones. By effectively utilizing channel interdependencies, we achieve optimum reuse of interchannel interactions, enhancing the model's performance. To evaluate the efficacy and accuracy of our proposed model, we compare it with transfer learning models commonly used in medical image analysis. We conducted experiments using a dataset of 138 polar maps (JPEG) obtained from 15O_H2O stress perfusion studies, comprising patients with ischemic and non-ischemic condition. Our results demonstrate that MS-DenseNet outperforms the transfer learning models, highlighting its potential for accurate ischemia detection and classification. This research contributes to the field of ischemia diagnosis by introducing a lightweight attention network that effectively captures the relevant features from myocardial polar maps. The integration of the squeeze and excitation modules further enhances the model's discriminative capabilities. The proposed MS-DenseNet offers a promising solution for accurate and efficient ischemia detection, potentially improving the speed and accuracy of diagnosis and leading to better patient outcomes
