A cooperative-relational approach to digital libraries

    Get PDF
Copyright @ 2007 Springer-Verlag, Berlin HeidelbergThis paper presents a novel approach to model-driven development of Digital Library (DL) systems. The overall idea is to allow Digital Library systems designers (e.g. information architects, librarians, domain experts) to easily design such systems by using a visual language. We designed a Domain Specific Visual Language for such a purpose and developed a framework supporting it; this framework helps designers by automatically generating code for the defined Digital Library system, so that they do not have to get involved into technical issues concerning its deployment. In our approach, both Human-Computer Interaction and Computer Supported Collaborative Work techniques are exploited when generating interfaces and services for the specific Digital Library domain

An investigation into the attitudes of academic librarians towards Internet plagiarism of HE students

    Get PDF
This paper investigates the attitudes of academic librarians towards Internet plagiarism by higher education students in the United Kingdom (UK), examining how they define Internet plagiarism, their perceived role in combating this phenomenon, and the skills and techniques they have or will adopt to achieve this. A Delphi study was undertaken using a sample of 10 respondents. The responses demonstrated that plagiarism is a multifaceted term and not easily definable, however respondents were unanimous in their opinion that the Internet has made it easier to plagiarise. The potential for active collaboration between librarians and academics to jointly address Internet plagiarism was seen as vital by all respondents, although opinion was divided on the role of librarians and academics. A blended approach is recommended, which involves policing and prevention; in addition to ensuring that students are achieving information literacy well before they reach the gates of the University

Generating collaborative systems for digital libraries: A model-driven approach

Copyright @ 2010 The Authors. The design and development of a digital library involves different stakeholders, such as: information architects, librarians, and domain experts, who need to agree on a common language to describe, discuss, and negotiate the services the library has to offer. To this end, high-level, language-neutral models have to be devised. Metamodeling techniques favor the definition of domainspecific visual languages through which stakeholders can share their views and directly manipulate representations of the domain entities. This paper describes CRADLE (Cooperative-Relational Approach to Digital Library Environments), a metamodel-based framework and visual language for the definition of notions and services related to the development of digital libraries. A collection of tools allows the automatic generation of several services, defined with the CRADLE visual language, and of the graphical user interfaces providing access to them for the final user. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by presenting digital libraries generated with CRADLE, while the CRADLE environment has been evaluated by using the cognitive dimensions framework

Model driven formal development of digital libraries

We have defined a Domain Specific Visual Language (DSVL) called VisMODLE, which allows the description of a DL using five different viewpoints: services, behaviour, collections, structure and society. From a meta-model based description of the different viewpoints, we have generated a modelling environment for VisMODLE. We have provided the environment with a code generator that produces XUL code for the DL’s user interface and composes the application using predefined components that implement the different services. Moreover, we have also added validation and simulation capabilities to the environment. Using the behavioural models (state-machine based), we can visually animate the system. In addition, the combined behaviour of actors and services can be transformed into a Petri net for further analysis.Work sponsored by projects MODUWEB (TIN2006-09678) and MOSAIC (TIC2005-08225-C07-06) of the Spanish Ministry of Science and Educatio

Performance Measures of Academic Digital Library Services: A Delphy Study at the University of Camerino

    Get PDF
Since the emergence of digital libraries, research and practical developments have grown exponentially, while evaluation activities have been lagging far behind. It is widely acknowledged that when getting at the issue of assessment in a digital library environment, much has yet to be investigated (Saracevic, 2000; Shearer, 2002; Chowdhury & Chowdhury, 2003; Cullen, 2003; Bertot, 2004). As an iterative multistage approach based on consensus, the Delphi research method is suitable for investigating performance measurement processes and their requirement of a stable set of indicators, thought to reflect and assess digital library services and commendable for significantly contributing to broad knowledge within the topic. A Delphi study, aimed at identifying performance measurement indicators of digital library services, will be carried out. On the one hand, it will be deeply rooted in an international perspective of existent researches, projects and standards, which will work as starting points and in due course as terms of comparison. On the other hand, it will have an exclusively Italian setting, drawing together the expertise of a panel of Italian library professionals and researchers, called to think out and reflect on a taxonomy of measures and indicators. The field of application of findings will be the University of Camerino, focus being on the appropriateness of the resulting classification model for this organisation needs and its prospective applicability

THE EFFECT OF SOCIAL REPUTATION ON RETENTION: DESIGNING A SOCIAL REAL-TIME DELPHI PLATFORM

    Get PDF
Forecasting with high uncertainty and long-time horizons still challenges researchers and practitioners. A widely adopted method in knowledge sharing and forecasting based on experts is the Delphi method and its offspring, the Real-Time Delphi. While the traditional Delphi method already is intensely investigated, the Real-Time Delphi is still evolving, and no dominant design has been found yet. A problem arising in both variants of the Delphi method, are high drop-out rates between rounds. This paper applies a design science research approach to motivate the need for social design elements from literature and derives design principles for Real-Time Delphi platform. Based on the design, we implement and evaluate a prototype in an online experiment as well as an IT artifact in a field study. We find significant supporting evidence, that (the promise of) positive social reputation increases commitment, and therefore subsequent platform engagement of our Real-Time Delphi survey. Our findings, therefore, contribute valuable design knowledge for Real-Time Delphi platforms. Moreover, we provide advice on how to raise retention in knowledge sharing systems
