Deep Cascade Multi-task Learning for Slot Filling in Online Shopping Assistant
Slot filling is a critical task in natural language understanding (NLU) for
dialog systems. State-of-the-art approaches treat it as a sequence labeling
problem and adopt such models as BiLSTM-CRF. While these models work relatively
well on standard benchmark datasets, they face challenges in the context of
E-commerce where the slot labels are more informative and carry richer
expressions. In this work, inspired by the unique structure of E-commerce
knowledge base, we propose a novel multi-task model with cascade and residual
connections, which jointly learns segment tagging, named entity tagging and
slot filling. Experiments show the effectiveness of the proposed cascade and
residual structures. Our model has a 14.6% advantage in F1 score over the
strong baseline methods on a new Chinese E-commerce shopping assistant dataset,
while achieving competitive accuracies on a standard dataset. Furthermore,
online test deployed on such dominant E-commerce platform shows 130%
improvement on accuracy of understanding user utterances. Our model has already
gone into production in the E-commerce platform.Comment: AAAI 201
Artificial Intelligence Technology
This open access book aims to give our readers a basic outline of today’s research and technology developments on artificial intelligence (AI), help them to have a general understanding of this trend, and familiarize them with the current research hotspots, as well as part of the fundamental and common theories and methodologies that are widely accepted in AI research and application. This book is written in comprehensible and plain language, featuring clearly explained theories and concepts and extensive analysis and examples. Some of the traditional findings are skipped in narration on the premise of a relatively comprehensive introduction to the evolution of artificial intelligence technology. The book provides a detailed elaboration of the basic concepts of AI, machine learning, as well as other relevant topics, including deep learning, deep learning framework, Huawei MindSpore AI development framework, Huawei Atlas computing platform, Huawei AI open platform for smart terminals, and Huawei CLOUD Enterprise Intelligence application platform. As the world’s leading provider of ICT (information and communication technology) infrastructure and smart terminals, Huawei’s products range from digital data communication, cyber security, wireless technology, data storage, cloud computing, and smart computing to artificial intelligence

Recommendation in Dialogue Systems
Dialogue system has been an active research field for decades and is developing fast in recent years, due to the recent breakthrough of the deep learning techniques. How to make recommendations in dialogue systems is attracting increasing attention because such systems could meet various user information needs and have much commercial potential.Current dialogue system researches typically focus on building systems for social conversation, question answering, and performing specific tasks. However, making recommendations to users, as important information need, has not been intensively researched. Meanwhile, traditional recommender systems are usually developed for non-conversation scenarios. In this dissertation, we explore how to integrate these two systems into one framework that specifically aims at making recommendations in dialogues. Such a system helps users find items by chatting with users to understand their preferences and recommending accordingly.First, we build conversational recommendation datasets, because existing dialogue datasets do not have user-item preference information or the dialogue utterances discussing facets of items, and current recommendation datasets do not have dialogue scripts associated with each user-item pair. We build the datasets by requesting crowdsourcing workers to compose dialogue utterances based on schemas and then use the delexicalization approach to simulate dialogues with the collected utterances. The datasets are used to train the natural language understanding component and provide recommendation information for our system.Based on collected datasets, we propose a reinforcement learning based conversational recommendation framework. Such a framework has three components, a belief tracker, a dialogue manager, and a recommender. The dialogue agent learns to first chat with a user to understand her preferences, and when it feels confident enough, it recommends a list of items to the user. We conduct both offline and online experiments to demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework. We further extend this framework with a personalized probabilistic recommender module. This recommender learns to predict the probability of a user likes an item given the dialogue utterance information and the personalized user preference information. By leveraging this hybrid information, the recommendation and dialogue performances are further improved. We evaluate the dialogue agent's strength in various simulated environments as well as in online user studies and demonstrate the advantages of this approach

Towards the development of a cost-effective Image-Sensing-Smart-Parking Systems (ISenSmaP)
Finding parking in a busy city has been a major daily problem in today’s busy life. Researchers have proposed various parking spot detection systems to overcome the problem of spending a long time searching for a parking spot. These works include a wide variety of sensors to detect the presence of a vehicle in a parking spot. These approaches are expensive to implement and ineffective in extreme weather conditions in an outdoor parking environment. As a result, a cost-effective, dependable, and time-saving parking solution is much more desirable. In this thesis, we proposed and developed an image processing-based real-time parking-spot detection system using deep-learning algorithms. In this regard, we annotated the images using the Visual Geometry Group (VGG) annotator and preprocessed the dataset using the image contrast enhancement technique that attempts to solve the illumination changes in pictures captured in an open space, followed by training the model using the Mask-R-CNN (Region-Based Convolutional Neural Network) and Faster-RCNN algorithms. ROIs (Regions of interest) are used later to determine the vacancy status of each parking spot. Our experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of our developed parking systems as we achieved a mean Average Precision (mAP) of 0.999 for the PKLot dataset and a mAP of 0.9758 for custom datasets. Furthermore, as part of the smart parking application, we developed an Android App that can be used by the end users. Our proposed intelligent parking system is scalable, cost-effective, and to the best of our knowledge, it offers higher parking spot detection accuracy than any other solutions in this domain
A cascaded unsupervised model for PoS tagging
This is an accepted manuscript of an article published by ACM in ACM Transactions on Asian and Low-Resource Language Information Processing in March 2021.
The accepted version of the publication may differ from the final published version.Part of speech (PoS) tagging is one of the fundamental syntactic tasks in Natural Language Processing (NLP), that assigns a syntactic category to each word within a given sentence or context (such as noun, verb, adjective etc). Those syntactic categories could be used to further analyze the sentence-level syntax (e.g. dependency parsing) and thereby extract the meaning of the sentence (e.g. semantic parsing). Various methods have been proposed for learning PoS tags in an unsupervised setting without using any annotated corpora.
One of the widely used methods for the tagging problem is log-linear models. Initialization of the parameters in a log-linear model is very crucial for the inference. Different initialization techniques have been used so far. In this work, we present a log-linear model for PoS tagging that uses another fully unsupervised Bayesian model to initialize the parameters of the model in a cascaded framework.
Therefore, we transfer some knowledge between two different unsupervised models to leverage the PoS tagging results, where a
log-linear model benefits from a Bayesian model’s expertise. We present results for Turkish as a morphologically rich language and for English as a comparably morphologically poor language in a fully unsupervised framework. The results show that our framework outperforms other unsupervised models proposed for PoS tagging
