    dissertationHigh speed wireless communication systems (e.g., long-term evolution (LTE), Wi-Fi) operate with high bandwidth and large peak-to-average power ratios (PAPRs). This is largely due to the use of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) modulation that is prevalent to maximize the spectral efficiency of the communication system. The power amplifier (PA) in the transmitter is the dominant energy consumer in the radio, largely because of the PAPR of the input signal. To reduce the energy consumption of the PA an amplifier that simultaneously achieves high efficiency and high linearity. Furthermore, to lower the cost for high volume production, it is desirable to achieve a complete System-on-Chip (SoC) integration. Linear amplifiers (e.g., Class-A, -B, -AB) are inefficient when amplifying signals with large PAPR that is associated by high peak-to-average modulation techniques such as LTE. OFDM. Switching amplifiers (e.g., Class-D, -E, -F) are very promising due to their high efficiency when compared to their linear amplifier counterparts. Linearization techniques for switching amplifiers have been intensively investigated due to their limited sensitivity to the input amplitude of the signal. Deep-submicron CMOS technology is mostly utilized for logic circuitry, and the Moore's law scaling of CMOS optimizes transistors to operate as high-speed and low-loss switches rather than high gain transistors. Hence, it is advantageous to use transistors in switching mode as switching amplifies and use high-speed digital logic circuitry to implement linearization systems and circuitry. In this work, several linearization architectures are investigated and demonstrated. An envelope elimination and restoration (EER) transmitter that comprises a class-E power amplifier and a 10-bit digital-to-analog converter (DAC) controlled current modulator is investigated. A pipelined switched-capacitor DAC is designed to control an open-loop transconductor that operates as a current modulator, modulating the amplitude of the current supplied to a class-E PA. Such a topology allows for increased filtering of the quantization noise that is problematic in most digital PAs (DPA). The proposed quadrature and multiphase architecture can avoid the bandwidth expansion and delay mismatch associated with polar PAs.     Baseband analog front-end and digital back-end for reconfigurable multi-standard terminals

    Multimedia applications are driving wireless network operators to add high-speed data services such as Edge (E-GPRS), WCDMA (UMTS) and WLAN (IEEE 802.11a,b,g) to the existing GSM network. This creates the need for multi-mode cellular handsets that support a wide range of communication standards, each with a different RF frequency, signal bandwidth, modulation scheme etc. This in turn generates several design challenges for the analog and digital building blocks of the physical layer. In addition to the above-mentioned protocols, mobile devices often include Bluetooth, GPS, FM-radio and TV services that can work concurrently with data and voice communication. Multi-mode, multi-band, and multi-standard mobile terminals must satisfy all these different requirements. Sharing and/or switching transceiver building blocks in these handsets is mandatory in order to extend battery life and/or reduce cost. Only adaptive circuits that are able to reconfigure themselves within the handover time can meet the design requirements of a single receiver or transmitter covering all the different standards while ensuring seamless inter-interoperability. This paper presents analog and digital base-band circuits that are able to support GSM (with Edge), WCDMA (UMTS), WLAN and Bluetooth using reconfigurable building blocks.     Development of an image converter of radical design

    A long term investigation of thin film sensors, monolithic photo-field effect transistors, and epitaxially diffused phototransistors and photodiodes to meet requirements to produce acceptable all solid state, electronically scanned imaging system, led to the production of an advanced engineering model camera which employs a 200,000 element phototransistor array (organized in a matrix of 400 rows by 500 columns) to secure resolution comparable to commercial television. The full investigation is described for the period July 1962 through July 1972, and covers the following broad topics in detail: (1) sensor monoliths; (2) fabrication technology; (3) functional theory; (4) system methodology; and (5) deployment profile.     A digital polar transmitter for multi-band OFDM Ultra-WideBand

    Linear power amplifiers used to implement the Ultra-Wideband standard must be backed off from optimum power efficiency to meet the standard specifications and the power efficiency suffers. The problem of low efficiency can be mitigated by polar modulation. Digital polar architectures have been employed on numerous wireless standards like GSM, EDGE, and WLAN, where the fractional bandwidths achieved are only about 1%, and the power levels achieved are often in the vicinity of 20 dBm. Can the architecture be employed on wireless standards with low-power and high fractional bandwidth requirements and yet achieve good power efficiency? To answer these question, this thesis studies the application of a digital polar transmitter architecture with parallel amplifier stages for UWB. The concept of the digital transmitter is motivated and inspired by three factors. First, unrelenting advances in the CMOS technology in deep-submicron process and the prevalence of low-cost Digital Signal processing have resulted in the realization of higher level of integration using digitally intensive approaches. Furthermore, the architecture is an evolution of polar modulation, which is known for high power efficiency in other wireless applications. Finally, the architecture is operated as a digital-to-analog converter which circumvents the use of converters in conventional transmitters. Modeling and simulation of the system architecture is performed on the Agilent Advanced Design System Ptolemy simulation platform. First, by studying the envelope signal, we found that envelope clipping results in a reduction in the peak-to-average power ratio which in turn improves the error vector magnitude performance (figure of merit for the study). In addition, we have demonstrated that a resolution of three bits suffices for the digital polar transmitter when envelope clipping is performed. Next, this thesis covers a theoretical derivation for the estimate of the error vector magnitude based on the resolution, quantization and phase noise errors. An analysis on the process variations - which result in gain and delay mismatches - for a digital transmitter architecture with four bits ensues. The above studies allow RF designers to estimate the number of bits required and the amount of distortion that can be tolerated in the system. Next, a study on the circuit implementation was conducted. A DPA that comprises 7 parallel RF amplifiers driven by a constant RF phase-modulated signal and 7 cascode transistors (individually connected in series with the bottom amplifiers) digitally controlled by a 3-bit digitized envelope signal to reconstruct the UWB signal at the output. Through the use of NFET models from the IBM 130-nm technology, our simulation reveals that our DPA is able to achieve an EVM of - 22 dB. The DPA simulations have been performed at 3.432 GHz centre frequency with a channel bandwidth of 528 MHz, which translates to a fractional bandwidth of 15.4%. Drain efficiencies of 13.2/19.5/21.0% have been obtained while delivering -1.9/2.5/5.5 dBm of output power and consuming 5/9/17 mW of power. In addition, we performed a yield analysis on the digital polar amplifier, based on unit-weighted and binary-weighted architecture, when gain variations are introduced in all the individual stages. The dynamic element matching method is also introduced for the unit-weighted digital polar transmitter. Monte Carlo simulations reveal that when the gain of the amplifiers are allowed to vary at a mean of 1 with a standard deviation of 0.2, the binary-weighted architecture obtained a yield of 79%, while the yields of the unit-weighted architectures are in the neighbourhood of 95%. Moreover, the dynamic element matching technique demonstrates an improvement in the yield by approximately 3%. Finally, a hardware implementation for this architecture based on software-defined arbitrary waveform generators is studied. In this section, we demonstrate that the error vector magnitude results obtained with a four-stage binary-weighted digital polar transmitter under ideal combining conditions fulfill the European Computer Manufacturers Association requirements. The proposed experimental setup, believed to be the first ever attempted, confirm the feasibility of a digital polar transmitter architecture for Ultra-Wideband. In addition, we propose a number of power combining techniques suitable for the hardware implementation. Spatial power combining, in particular, shows a high potential for the digital polar transmitter architecture. The above studies demonstrate the feasibility of the digital polar architecture with good power efficiency for a wideband wireless standard with low-power and high fractional bandwidth requirements

    Digital Timing Control in SRAMs for Yield Enhancement and Graceful Aging Degradation

    Embedded SRAMs can occupy the majority of the chip area in SOCs. The increase in process variation and aging degradation due to technology scaling can severely compromise the integrity of SRAM memory cells, hence resulting in cell failures. Enough cell failures in a memory can lead to it being rejected during initial testing, and hence decrease the manufacturing yield. Or, as a result of long-term applied stress, lead to in-field system failures. Certain types of cell failures can be mitigated through improved timing control. Post-fabrication programmable timing can allow for after-the-fact calibration of timing signals on a per die basis. This allows for a SRAM's timing signals to be generated based on the characteristics specific to the individual chip, thus allowing for an increase in yield and reduction in in-field system failures. In this thesis, a delay line based SRAM timing block with digitally programmable timing signals has been implemented in a 180 nm CMOS technology. Various timing-related cell failure mechanisms including: 1). Operational Read Failures, 2). Cell Stability Failures, and 3). Power Envelope Failures are investigated. Additionally, the major contributing factors for process variation and device aging degradation are discussed in the context of SRAMs. Simulations show that programmable timing can be used to reduce cell failure rates by over 50%

    Digital-to-Analog Converter Interface for Computer Assisted Biologically Inspired Systems

    In today\u27s integrated circuit technology, system interfaces play an important role of enabling fast, reliable data communications. A key feature of this work is the exploration and development of ultra-low power data converters. Data converters are present in some form in almost all mixed-signal systems; in particular, digital-to-analog converters present the opportunity for digitally controlled analog signal sources. Such signal sources are used in a variety of applications such as neuromorphic systems and analog signal processing. Multi-dimensional systems, such as biologically inspired neuromorphic systems, require vectors of analog signals. To use a microprocessor to control these analog systems, we must ultimately convert the digital control signal to an analog control signal and deliver it to the system. Integrating such capabilities of a converter on chip can yield significant power and chip area constraints. Special attention is paid to the power efficiency of the data converter, the data converter design discussed in this thesis yields the lowest power consumption to date. The need for a converter with these properties leads us to the concept of a scalable array of power-efficient digital-to-analog converters; the channels of which are time-domain multiplexed so that chip-area is minimized while preserving performance. To take further advantage of microprocessor capabilities, an analog-to- digital design is proposed to return the analog system\u27s outputs to the microprocessor in a digital form. A current-steering digital-to-analog converter was chosen as a candidate for the conversion process because of its natural speed and voltage-to-current translation properties. This choice is nevertheless unusual, because current-steering digital- to-analog converters have a reputation for high performance with high power consumption. A time domain multiplexing scheme is presented such that a digital data set of any size is synchronously multiplexed through a finite array of converters, minimizing the total area and power consumption. I demonstrate the suitability of current-steering digital-to-analog converters for ultra low-power operation with a proof-of-concept design in a widely available 130 nm CMOS technology. In statistical simulation, the proposed digital-to-analog converter was capable of 8-bit, 100 kSps operation while consuming 231 nW of power from a 1 V supply

    Linearization of Time-encoded ADCs Architectures for Smart MEMS Sensors in Low Power CMOS Technology

    Mención Internacional en el título de doctorIn the last few years, the development of mobile technologies and machine learning applications has increased the demand of MEMS-based digital microphones. Mobile devices have several microphones enabling noise canceling, acoustic beamforming and speech recognition. With the development of machine learning applications the interest to integrate sensors with neural networks has increased. This has driven the interest to develop digital microphones in nanometer CMOS nodes where the microphone analog-front end and digital processing, potentially including neural networks, is integrated on the same chip. Traditionally, analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) in digital microphones have been implemented using high order Sigma-Delta modulators. The most common technique to implement these high order Sigma-Selta modulators is switchedcapacitor CMOS circuits. Recently, to reduce power consumption and make them more suitable for tasks that require always-on operation, such as keyword recognition, switched-capacitor circuits have been improved using inverter-based operational amplifier integrators. Alternatively, switched-capacitor based Sigma- Delta modulators have been replaced by continuous time Sigma-Delta converters. Nevertheless, in both implementations the input signal is voltage encoded across the modulator, making the integration in smaller CMOS nodes more challenging due to the reduced voltage supply. An alternative technique consists on encoding the input signal on time (or frequency) instead of voltage. This is what time-encoded converters do. Lately, time-encoding converters have gained popularity as they are more suitable to nanometer CMOS nodes than Sigma-Delta converters. Among the ones that have drawn more interest we find voltage-controlled oscillator based ADCs (VCOADCs). VCO-ADCs can be implemented using CMOS inverter based ring oscillators (RO) and digital circuitry. They also show noise-shaping properties. This makes them a very interesting alternative for implementation of ADCs in nanometer CMOS nodes. Nevertheless, two main circuit impairments are present in VCO-ADCs, and both come from the oscillator non-idealities. The first of them is the oscillator phase noise, that reduces the resolution of the ADC. The second is the non-linear tuning curve of the oscillator, that results in harmonic distortion at medium to high input amplitudes. In this thesis we analyze the use of time encoding ADCs for MEMS microphones with special focus on ring oscillator based ADCs (RO-ADCs). Firstly, we study the use of a dual-slope based SAR noise shaped quantizer (SAR-NSQ) in sigma-delta loops. This quantizer adds and extra level of noise-shaping to the modulator, improving the resolution. The quantizer is explained, and equations for the noise transfer function (NTF) of a third order sigma-delta using a second order filter and the NSQ are presented. Secondly, we move our attention to the topic of RO-ADCs. We present a high dynamic range MEMS microphone 130nm CMOS chip based on an open-loop VCO-ADC. This dissertation shows the implementation of the analog front-end that includes the oscillator and the MEMS interface, with a focus on achieving low power consumption with low noise and a high dynamic range. The digital circuitry is left to be explained by the coauthor of the chip in his dissertation. The chip achieves a 80dBA peak SNDR and 108dB dynamic range with a THD of 1.5% at 128 dBSPL with a power consumption of 438μW. After that, we analyze the use of a frequency-dependent-resistor (FDR) to implement an unsampled feedback loop around the oscillator. The objective is to reduce distortion. Additionally phase noise mitigation is achieved. A first topology including an operational amplifier to increase the loop gain is analyzed. The design is silicon proven in a 130 nm CMOS chip that achieves a 84 dBA peak SNDR with an analog power consumption of 600μW. A second topology without the operational amplifier is also analyzed. Two chips are designed with this topology. The first chip in 130 nm CMOS is a full VCO-ADC including the frequencyto- digital converter (F2D). This chip achieves a peak SNDR of 76.6 dBA with a power consumption of 482μW. The second chip includes only the oscillator and is implemented in 55nm CMOS. The peak SNDR is 78.15 dBA and the analog power consumption is 153μW. To finish this thesis, two circuits that use an FDR with a ring oscillator are presented. The first is a capacity-to-digital converter (CDC). The second is a filter made with an FDR and an oscillator intended for voice activity detection tasks (VAD).En los últimos años, el desarrollo de las tecnologías móviles y las aplicaciones de machine-learning han aumentado la demanda de micrófonos digitales basados en MEMS. Los dipositivos móviles tienen varios micrófonos que permiten la cancelación de ruido, el beamforming o conformación de haces y el reconocimiento de voz. Con el desarrollo de aplicaciones de aprendizaje automático, el interés por integrar sensores con redes neuronales ha aumentado. Esto ha impulsado el interés por desarrollar micrófonos digitales en nodos CMOS nanométricos donde el front-end analógico y el procesamiento digital del micrófono, que puede incluir redes neuronales, está integrado en el mismo chip. Tradicionalmente, los convertidores analógicos-digitales (ADC) en micrófonos digitales han sido implementados utilizando moduladores Sigma-Delta de orden elevado. La técnica más común para implementar estos moduladores Sigma- Delta es el uso de circuitos CMOS de capacidades conmutadas. Recientemente, para reducir el consumo de potencia y hacerlos más adecuados para las tareas que requieren una operación continua, como el reconocimiento de palabras clave, los convertidores Sigma-Delta de capacidades conmutadas has sido mejorados con el uso de integradores implementados con amplificadores operacionales basados en inversores CMOS. Alternativamente, los Sigma-Delta de capacidades conmutadas han sido reemplazados por moduladores en tiempo continuo. No obstante, en ambas implementaciones, la señal de entrada es codificada en voltaje durante el proceso de conversión, lo que hace que la integración en nodos CMOS más pequeños sea complicada debido a la menor tensión de alimentación. Una técnica alternativa consiste en codificar la señal de entrada en tiempo (o frecuencia) en lugar de tensión. Esto es lo que hacen los convertidores de codificación temporal. Recientemente, los convertidores de codificación temporal han ganado popularidad ya que son más adecuados para nodos CMOS nanométricos que los convertidores Sigma-Delta. Entre los que más interés han despertado encontramos los ADCs basados en osciladores controlados por tensión (VCO-ADC). Los VCO-ADC se pueden implementar usando osciladores en anillo (RO) implementados con inversores CMOS y circuitos digitales. Esta familia de convertidores también tiene conformado de ruido. Esto los convierte en una alternativa muy interesante para la implementación de convertidores en nodos CMOS nanométricos. Sin embargo, dos problemas principales están presentes en este tipo de ADCs debidos ambos a las no idealidades del oscilador. El primero de los problemas es la presencia de ruido de fase en el oscilador, lo que reduce la resolución del ADC. El segundo es la curva de conversion voltaje-frecuencia no lineal del oscilador, lo que causa distorsión a amplitudes medias y altas. En esta tesis analizamos el uso de ADCs de codificación temporal para micrófonos MEMS, con especial interés en ADCS basados en osciladores de anillo (RO-ADC). En primer lugar, estudiamos el uso de un cuantificador SAR con conformado de ruido (SAR-NSQ) en moduladores Sigma-Delta. Este cuantificador agrega un orden adicional de conformado de ruido al modulador, mejorando la resolución. En este documento se explica el cuantificador y obtienen las ecuaciones para la función de transferencia de ruido (NTF) de un sigma-delta de tercer orden usando un filtro de segundo orden y el NSQ. En segundo lugar, dirigimos nuestra atención al tema de los RO-ADC. Presentamos el chip de un micrófono MEMS de alto rango dinámico en CMOS de 130 nm basado en un VCO-ADC de bucle abierto. En esta tesis se explica la implementación del front-end analógico que incluye el oscilador y la interfaz con el MEMS. Esta implementación se ha llevado a cabo con el objetivo de lograr un bajo consumo de potencia, un bajo nivel de ruido y un alto rango dinámico. La descripción del back-end digital se deja para la tesis del couator del chip. La SNDR de pico del chip es de 80dBA y el rango dinámico de 108dB con una THD de 1,5% a 128 dBSPL y un consumo de potencia de 438μW. Finalmente, se analiza el uso de una resistencia dependiente de frecuencia (FDR) para implementar un bucle de realimentación no muestreado alrededor del oscilador. El objetivo es reducir la distorsión. Además, también se logra la mitigación del ruido de fase del oscilador. Se analyza una primera topologia de realimentación incluyendo un amplificador operacional para incrementar la ganancia de bucle. Este diseño se prueba en silicio en un chip CMOS de 130nm que logra un pico de SNDR de 84 dBA con un consumo de potencia de 600μW en la parte analógica. Seguidamente, se analiza una segunda topología sin el amplificador operacional. Se fabrican y miden dos chips diseñados con esta topologia. El primero de ellos en CMOS de 130 nm es un VCO-ADC completo que incluye el convertidor de frecuencia a digital (F2D). Este chip alcanza un pico SNDR de 76,6 dBA con un consumo de potencia de 482μW. El segundo incluye solo el oscilador y está implementado en CMOS de 55nm. El pico SNDR es 78.15 dBA y el el consumo de potencia analógica es de 153μW. Para cerrar esta tesis, se presentan dos circuitos que usan la FDR con un oscilador en anillo. El primero es un convertidor de capacidad a digital (CDC).
