Cognitively-inspired Agent-based Service Composition for Mobile & Pervasive Computing
Automatic service composition in mobile and pervasive computing faces many
challenges due to the complex and highly dynamic nature of the environment.
Common approaches consider service composition as a decision problem whose
solution is usually addressed from optimization perspectives which are not
feasible in practice due to the intractability of the problem, limited
computational resources of smart devices, service host's mobility, and time
constraints to tailor composition plans. Thus, our main contribution is the
development of a cognitively-inspired agent-based service composition model
focused on bounded rationality rather than optimality, which allows the system
to compensate for limited resources by selectively filtering out continuous
streams of data. Our approach exhibits features such as distributedness,
modularity, emergent global functionality, and robustness, which endow it with
capabilities to perform decentralized service composition by orchestrating
manifold service providers and conflicting goals from multiple users. The
evaluation of our approach shows promising results when compared against

A Software Suite for the Control and the Monitoring of Adaptive Robotic Ecologies
Adaptive robotic ecologies are networks of heterogeneous robotic devices (sensors, actuators, automated appliances) pervasively embedded in everyday environments, where they learn to cooperate towards the achievement of complex tasks. While their flexibility makes them an increasingly popular way to improve a system’s reliability, scalability, robustness and autonomy, their effective realisation demands integrated control and software solutions for the specification, integration and management of their highly heterogeneous and computational constrained components. In this extended abstract we briefly illustrate the characteristic requirements dictated by robotic ecologies, discuss our experience in developing adaptive robotic ecologies, and provide an overview of the specific solutions developed as part of the EU FP7 RUBICON Project

Cost Efficient Distributed Load Frequency Control in Power Systems
The introduction of new technologies and increased penetration of renewable resources is altering the power distribution landscape which now includes a larger numbers of micro-generators. The centralized strategies currently employed for performing frequency control in a cost efficient way need to be revisited and decentralized to conform with the increase of distributed generation in the grid. In this paper, the use of Multi-Agent and Multi-Objective Reinforcement Learning techniques to train models to perform cost efficient frequency control through decentralized decision making is proposed. More specifically, we cast the frequency control problem as a Markov Decision Process and propose the use of reward composition and action composition multi-objective techniques and compare the results between the two. Reward composition is achieved by increasing the dimensionality of the reward function, while action composition is achieved through linear combination of actions produced by multiple single objective models. The proposed framework is validated through comparing the observed dynamics with the acceptable limits enforced in the industry and the cost optimal setups
Decentralization of Multiagent Policies by Learning What to Communicate
Effective communication is required for teams of robots to solve
sophisticated collaborative tasks. In practice it is typical for both the
encoding and semantics of communication to be manually defined by an expert;
this is true regardless of whether the behaviors themselves are bespoke,
optimization based, or learned. We present an agent architecture and training
methodology using neural networks to learn task-oriented communication
semantics based on the example of a communication-unaware expert policy. A
perimeter defense game illustrates the system's ability to handle dynamically
changing numbers of agents and its graceful degradation in performance as
communication constraints are tightened or the expert's observability
assumptions are broken.Comment: 7 page

Mandate-driven networking eco-system : a paradigm shift in end-to-end communications
The wireless industry is driven by key stakeholders that follow a holistic approach of "one-system-fits-all" that leads to moving network functionality of meeting stringent End-to-End (E2E) communication requirements towards the core and cloud infrastructures. This trend is limiting smaller and new players for bringing in new and novel solutions. For meeting these E2E requirements, tenants and end-users need to be active players for bringing their needs and innovations. Driving E2E communication not only in terms of quality of service (QoS) but also overall carbon footprint and spectrum efficiency from one specific community may lead to undesirable simplifications and a higher level of abstraction of other network segments may lead to sub-optimal operations. Based on this, the paper presents a paradigm shift that will enlarge the role of wireless innovation at academia, Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SME)'s, industries and start-ups while taking into account decentralized mandate-driven intelligence in E2E communications
