    Prediction-Based Super Twisting Sliding Mode Load Frequency Control for Multi Area Interconnected Power Systems with State and Input Time Delays using Disturbance Observer

    International audienceA shift in paradigm from dedicated to open communication channels in power systems have made them prone to constant and time varying delays. This paper tackles a novel load frequency control (LFC) problem in the presence of constant and time varying delays in state and control input under load disturbances. The presence of time delays can deteriorate the performance of the controller or even destabilize the system. The above problem is addressed through a prediction-based super twisting sliding mode control (ST-SMC) using a state and disturbance observer. The proposed design achieves finite time convergence of frequency and tie line power deviation. The said design is validated under ramp and random step disturbance, with nonlinearities like generation rate constraints and governor deadband, with an integration of renewable energy and also with IEEE 39 bus power system. The closed loop stability is proven thanks to candidate Lyapunov function and verified by simulations

    Sliding Mode Observer-Based Finite Time Control Scheme for Frequency Regulation and Economic Dispatch in Power Grids

The final version is available from Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers via the DOI in this record.In this brief, a novel sliding mode (SM) observer-based scheme is proposed to achieve frequency regulation and economic dispatch (ED) in power grids composed of interconnection of generators and load buses. The ED problem is addressed in two steps. Assuming only the voltage phase angles are measured, in the first step a network of heterogeneous SM observers, suitably interconnected in a distributed fashion, is created to estimate both frequency deviations and unknown power levels associated with each bus. In the second step, the observer scheme is coupled with an SM control strategy which is able to reach the optimal value of the control input in each generator bus in finite time. The scheme is assessed via the IEEE 39 bus benchmark, and a comparison with existing control methods is provided

    Robust model-based fault estimation and fault-tolerant control : towards an integration

    To maintain robustly acceptable system performance, fault estimation (FE) is adopted to reconstruct fault signals and a fault-tolerant control (FTC) controller is employed to compensate for the fault effects. The inevitably existing system and estimation uncertainties result in the so-called bi-directional robustness interactions defined in this work between the FE and FTC functions, which gives rise to an important and challenging yet open integrated FE/FTC design problem concerned in this thesis. An example of fault-tolerant wind turbine pitch control is provided as a practical motivation for integrated FE/FTC design.To achieve the integrated FE/FTC design for linear systems, two strategies are proposed. A H∞ optimization based approach is first proposed for linear systems with differentiable matched faults, using augmented state unknown input observer FE and adaptive sliding mode FTC. The integrated design is converted into an observer-based robust control problem solved via a single-step linear matrix inequality formulation.With the purpose of an integrated design with more freedom and also applicable for a range of general fault scenarios, a decoupling approach is further proposed. This approach can estimate and compensate unmatched non-differentiable faults and perturbations by combined adaptive sliding mode augmented state unknown input observer and backstepping FTC controller. The observer structure renders a recovery of the Separation Principle and allows great freedom for the FE/FTC designs.Integrated FE/FTC design strategies are also developed for Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy modelling nonlinear systems, Lipschitz nonlinear systems, and large-scale interconnected systems, based on extensions of the H∞ optimization approach for linear systems.Tutorial examples are used to illustrate the design strategies for each approach. Physical systems, a 3-DOF (degree-of-freedom) helicopter and a 3-machine power system, are used to provide further evaluation of the proposed integrated FE/FTC strategies.     The problem of understanding when individual actions of interacting agents display to a coordinated collective behavior has receiving a considerable attention in many research fields. Especially in control engineering, distributed applications in cooperative environments are achieving resounding success, due to the large number of relevant applications, such as formation control, attitude synchronization tasks and cooperative applications in large-scale systems. Although those problems have been extensively studied in Literature, themost of classic approaches use to consider the unrealistic scenario in which networks always consist of identical, linear, time-invariant entities. It’s clear that this assumption strongly approximates the effective behavior of a network. In fact agents can be subjected to parameter uncertainties, unmodeled dynamics or simply characterized by proper nonlinear dynamics. Therefore, motivated by those practical problems, the present Thesis proposes various approaches for dealing with the problem of observation and control in both the framework of multi-agents and complex interconnected systems. The main contributions of this Thesis consist on the development of several algorithms based on concepts of discontinuous slidingmode control. This techniques can be employed for solving in finite-time problems of robust state estimation and consensus-based synchronization in network of heterogenous nonlinear systems subjected to unknown but bounded disturbances and sudden topological changes. Both directed and undirected topologies have been taken into account. It is worth to mention also the extension of the consensus problem to networks of agents governed by a class parabolic partial differential equation, for which, for the first time, a boundary-based robust local interaction protocol has been presented
