    Timely Data Delivery in a Realistic Bus Network

    Abstract—WiFi-enabled buses and stops may form the backbone of a metropolitan delay tolerant network, that exploits nearby communications, temporary storage at stops, and predictable bus mobility to deliver non-real time information. This paper studies the problem of how to route data from its source to its destination in order to maximize the delivery probability by a given deadline. We assume to know the bus schedule, but we take into account that randomness, due to road traffic conditions or passengers boarding and alighting, affects bus mobility. We propose a simple stochastic model for bus arrivals at stops, supported by a study of real-life traces collected in a large urban network. A succinct graph representation of this model allows us to devise an optimal (under our model) single-copy routing algorithm and then extend it to cases where several copies of the same data are permitted. Through an extensive simulation study, we compare the optimal routing algorithm with three other approaches: minimizing the expected traversal time over our graph, minimizing the number of hops a packet can travel, and a recently-proposed heuristic based on bus frequencies. Our optimal algorithm outperforms all of them, but most of the times it essentially reduces to minimizing the expected traversal time. For values of deadlines close to the expected delivery time, the multi-copy extension requires only 10 copies to reach almost the performance of the costly flooding approach. I

    Client Selection for Federated Learning with Heterogeneous Resources in Mobile Edge

    We envision a mobile edge computing (MEC) framework for machine learning (ML) technologies, which leverages distributed client data and computation resources for training high-performance ML models while preserving client privacy. Toward this future goal, this work aims to extend Federated Learning (FL), a decentralized learning framework that enables privacy-preserving training of models, to work with heterogeneous clients in a practical cellular network. The FL protocol iteratively asks random clients to download a trainable model from a server, update it with own data, and upload the updated model to the server, while asking the server to aggregate multiple client updates to further improve the model. While clients in this protocol are free from disclosing own private data, the overall training process can become inefficient when some clients are with limited computational resources (i.e. requiring longer update time) or under poor wireless channel conditions (longer upload time). Our new FL protocol, which we refer to as FedCS, mitigates this problem and performs FL efficiently while actively managing clients based on their resource conditions. Specifically, FedCS solves a client selection problem with resource constraints, which allows the server to aggregate as many client updates as possible and to accelerate performance improvement in ML models. We conducted an experimental evaluation using publicly-available large-scale image datasets to train deep neural networks on MEC environment simulations. The experimental results show that FedCS is able to complete its training process in a significantly shorter time compared to the original FL protocol

    Resource Constrained Vehicular Edge Federated Learning with Highly Mobile Connected Vehicles

    This paper proposes a vehicular edge federated learning (VEFL) solution, where an edge server leverages highly mobile connected vehicles' (CVs') onboard central processing units (CPUs) and local datasets to train a global model. Convergence analysis reveals that the VEFL training loss depends on the successful receptions of the CVs' trained models over the intermittent vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) wireless links. Owing to high mobility, in the full device participation case (FDPC), the edge server aggregates client model parameters based on a weighted combination according to the CVs' dataset sizes and sojourn periods, while it selects a subset of CVs in the partial device participation case (PDPC). We then devise joint VEFL and radio access technology (RAT) parameters optimization problems under delay, energy and cost constraints to maximize the probability of successful reception of the locally trained models. Considering that the optimization problem is NP-hard, we decompose it into a VEFL parameter optimization sub-problem, given the estimated worst-case sojourn period, delay and energy expense, and an online RAT parameter optimization sub-problem. Finally, extensive simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed solutions with a practical 5G new radio (5G-NR) RAT under a realistic microscopic mobility model

    Resource and power management in next generation networks

    The limits of today’s cellular communication systems are constantly being tested by the exponential increase in mobile data traffic, a trend which is poised to continue well into the next decade. Densification of cellular networks, by overlaying smaller cells, i.e., micro, pico and femtocells, over the traditional macrocell, is seen as an inevitable step in enabling future networks to support the expected increases in data rate demand. Next generation networks will most certainly be more heterogeneous as services will be offered via various types of points of access (PoAs). Indeed, besides the traditional macro base station, it is expected that users will also be able to access the network through a wide range of other PoAs: WiFi access points, remote radio-heads (RRHs), small cell (i.e., micro, pico and femto) base stations or even other users, when device-to-device (D2D) communications are supported, creating thus a multi-tiered network architecture. This approach is expected to enhance the capacity of current cellular networks, while patching up potential coverage gaps. However, since available radio resources will be fully shared, the inter-cell interference as well as the interference between the different tiers will pose a significant challenge. To avoid severe degradation of network performance, properly managing the interference is essential. In particular, techniques that mitigate interference such Inter Cell Interference Coordination (ICIC) and enhanced ICIC (eICIC) have been proposed in the literature to address the issue. In this thesis, we argue that interference may be also addressed during radio resource scheduling tasks, by enabling the network to make interference-aware resource allocation decisions. Carrier aggregation technology, which allows the simultaneous use of several component carriers, on the other hand, targets the lack of sufficiently large portions of frequency spectrum; a problem that severely limits the capacity of wireless networks. The aggregated carriers may, in general, belong to different frequency bands, and have different bandwidths, thus they also may have very different signal propagation characteristics. Integration of carrier aggregation in the network introduces additional tasks and further complicates interference management, but also opens up a range of possibilities for improving spectrum efficiency in addition to enhancing capacity, which we aim to exploit. In this thesis, we first look at the resource allocation in problem in dense multitiered networks with support for advanced features such as carrier aggregation and device-to-device communications. For two-tiered networks with D2D support, we propose a centralised, near optimal algorithm, based on dynamic programming principles, that allows a central scheduler to make interference and traffic-aware scheduling decisions, while taking into consideration the short-lived nature of D2D links. As the complexity of the central scheduler increases exponentially with the number of component carriers, we further propose a distributed heuristic algorithm to tackle the resource allocation problem in carrier aggregation enabled dense networks. We show that the solutions we propose perform significantly better than standard solutions adopted in cellular networks such as eICIC coupled with Proportional Fair scheduling, in several key metrics such as user throughput, timely delivery of content and spectrum and energy efficiency, while ensuring fairness for backward compatible devices. Next, we investigate the potentiality to enhance network performance by enabling the different nodes of the network to reduce and dynamically adjust the transmit power of the different carriers to mitigate interference. Considering that the different carriers may have different coverage areas, we propose to leverage this diversity, to obtain high-performing network configurations. Thus, we model the problem of carrier downlink transmit power setting, as a competitive game between teams of PoAs, which enables us to derive distributed dynamic power setting algorithms. Using these algorithms we reach stable configurations in the network, known as Nash equilibria, which we show perform significantly better than fixed power strategies coupled with eICIC

    Contributions to QoS and energy efficiency in wi-fi networks

    The Wi-Fi technology has been in the recent years fostering the proliferation of attractive mobile computing devices with broadband capabilities. Current Wi-Fi radios though severely impact the battery duration of these devices thus limiting their potential applications. In this thesis we present a set of contributions that address the challenge of increasing energy efficiency in Wi-Fi networks. In particular, we consider the problem of how to optimize the trade-off between performance and energy effciency in a wide variety of use cases and applications. In this context, we introduce novel energy effcient algorithms for real-time and data applications, for distributed and centralized Wi-Fi QoS and power saving protocols and for Wi-Fi stations and Access Points. In addition, the di¿erent algorithms presented in this thesis adhere to the following design guidelines: i) they are implemented entirely at layer two, and can hence be easily re-used in any device with a Wi-Fi interface, ii) they do not require modi¿cations to current 802.11 standards, and can hence be readily deployed in existing Wi-Fi devices, and iii) whenever possible they favor client side solutions, and hence mobile computing devices implementing them can benefit from an increased energy efficiency regardless of the Access Point they connect to. Each of our proposed algorithms is thoroughly evaluated by means of both theoretical analysis and packet level simulations. Thus, the contributions presented in this thesis provide a realistic set of tools to improve energy efficiency in current Wi-Fi networks
