    A Model For Technology Adoption In China: Extending Caselli And Coleman

    Focusing on China, a country pushing toward a more market-oriented system at warped speed, we suggest that previous models of technology adoption and/or diffusion may not be suitable for countries migrating from centralized control. We support the work of Au and Yeung (2007), who suggest that China may suffer from a risk avoidance attitude at the firm level based on previous attitudes of control. Relying on the literature and supported by an in-depth analysis of the Chinese machine tool industry we extend the work of Caselli and Coleman (2001, 2002) and advance an expanded model of technology adoption specific to emerging markets, such as China, experiencing a transformation from centrally controlled economy toward a market one

    Digital fabrication inspired design: Influence of fabrication parameters on a design process

    The relation between architecture and building technologies has played a vital role in the development of both disciplines throughout the history. The link between the two is also valid in the present times, as the design and production processes are influenced by computational advances. Considering the use of a particular digital fabrication method, this research intends to look into the design-production relation and attempts to answer the question of how the manufacturing parameters can be integrated into the design process to facilitate the design-to-production communication. It is argued that the above is achievable through the application of a simulation-based algorithmic procedures derived from the inherent logic of a fabrication machine's functionality. The above stated was studied through creation of two custom tools facilitating the design process – namely a library for the Processing programming language and a bespoke design procedure - both based on a functionality of the CNC milling machines. Finally, the conclusion is made that broader implementation of custom design procedures with underlying digital fabrication logic has a potential of altering the design process and facilitate the design-to-factory communication

    From 3D Models to 3D Prints: an Overview of the Processing Pipeline

    Due to the wide diffusion of 3D printing technologies, geometric algorithms for Additive Manufacturing are being invented at an impressive speed. Each single step, in particular along the Process Planning pipeline, can now count on dozens of methods that prepare the 3D model for fabrication, while analysing and optimizing geometry and machine instructions for various objectives. This report provides a classification of this huge state of the art, and elicits the relation between each single algorithm and a list of desirable objectives during Process Planning. The objectives themselves are listed and discussed, along with possible needs for tradeoffs. Additive Manufacturing technologies are broadly categorized to explicitly relate classes of devices and supported features. Our study will commence with a detailed exploration of the concept of digital twins and their specific applications in materials engineering, emphasizing their ability to simulate intricate material behaviors and processes in a virtual environment. Subsequently, we will focus on exploiting digital twins for predicting diverse material behaviors such as mechanical properties, failure modes, and phase transformations, demonstrating how digital twins can utilize a combination of historical data, real-time monitoring, and sophisticated algorithms to predict outcomes accurately. Furthermore, we will delve into the role of digital twins in optimizing materials manufacturing processes, including casting, machining, and additive manufacturing, illustrating how digital twins can model these processes, identify potential issues, and suggest optimal parameters. We will present detailed case studies to provide practical insights into the implementation of digital twins in materials engineering, including the advantages and challenges. The final segment of our research will address the current challenges in implementing digital twins, such as data quality, model validation, and computational demands, proposing potential solutions and outlining future directions.     A surrogate-assisted optimization approach for multi-response end milling of aluminum alloy AA3105

    AbstractOptimization of the end milling process is a combinatorial task due to the involvement of a large number of process variables and performance characteristics. Process-specific numerical models or mathematical functions are required for the evaluation of parametric combinations in order to improve the quality of the machined parts and machining time. This problem could be categorized as the offline data-driven optimization problem. For such problems, the surrogate or predictive models are useful, which could be employed to approximate the objective functions for the optimization algorithms. This paper presents a data-driven surrogate-assisted optimizer to model the end mill cutting of aluminum alloy on a desktop milling machine. To facilitate that, material removal rate (MRR), surface roughness (Ra), and cutting forces are considered as the functions of tool diameter, spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut. The principal methodology is developed using a Bayesian regularized neural network (surrogate) and a beetle antennae search algorithm (optimizer) to perform the process optimization. The relationships among the process responses are studied using Kohonen’s self-organizing map. The proposed methodology is successfully compared with three different optimization techniques and shown to outperform them with improvements of 40.98% for MRR and 10.56% for Ra. The proposed surrogate-assisted optimization method is prompt and efficient in handling the offline machining data. Finally, the validation has been done using the experimental end milling cutting carried out on aluminum alloy to measure the surface roughness, material removal rate, and cutting forces using dynamometer for the optimal cutting parameters on desktop milling center. From the estimated surface roughness value of 0.4651 μm, the optimal cutting parameters have given a maximum material removal rate of 44.027 mm3/s with less amplitude of cutting force on the workpiece. The obtained test results show that more optimal surface quality and material removal can be achieved with the optimal set of parameters.</jats:p

    Search-based system architecture development using a holistic modeling approach

    This dissertation presents an innovative approach to system architecting where search algorithms are used to explore design trade space for good architecture alternatives. Such an approach is achieved by integrating certain model construction, alternative generation, simulation, and assessment processes into a coherent and automated framework. This framework is facilitated by a holistic modeling approach that combines the capabilities of Object Process Methodology (OPM), Colored Petri Net (CPN), and feature model. The resultant holistic model can not only capture the structural, behavioral, and dynamic aspects of a system, allowing simulation and strong analysis methods to be applied, it can also specify the architectural design space. Both object-oriented analysis and design (OOA/D) and domain engineering were exploited to capture design variables and their domains and define architecture generation operations. A fully realized framework (with genetic algorithms as the search algorithm) was developed. Both the proposed framework and its suggested implementation, including the proposed holistic modeling approach and architecture alternative generation operations, are generic. They are targeted at systems that can be specified using object-oriented or process-oriented paradigm. The broad applicability of the proposed approach is demonstrated on two examples. One is the configuration of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs) under multi-objective optimization and the other is the architecture design of a manned lunar landing system for the Apollo program. The test results show that the proposed approach can cover a huge number of architecture alternatives and support the assessment of several performance measures.
