    MELOC - memory and location optimized caching for mobile Ad hoc networks

    The advancement of Mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) is tremendous in the field of social and military applications. Caching and Replication are the two common techniques used to improve data access efficiency in Mobile Ad hoc networks. Caching favors data access efficiency by bringing data closer to the source. Existing caching approaches are deficient in reducing the number of cache locations, thus reducing the number of copies, which is needed for many mission critical applications considering safety and security. Conversely, reducing the number of caches should not affect the efficiency of data access. We design an efficient broker based caching model named Memory and Location Optimized Caching (MELOC) , which reduces the number of cache locations, and at the same time preserves data access efficiency. Our caching model mostly chooses centrally located nodes as cache location. In addition, we cache only essential data closer to the source, saving memory. Hence our approach bears the name Memory and Location Optimized caching (MELOC) . Our initial MELOC model suits only small MANET topology of 30 nodes. We further extend our initial caching model to suit large MANET topology of 100 nodes by overcoming certain disadvantages pertaining to large network topology --Abstract, page iv

    In this survey, we first briefly review the current state of cyber attacks, highlighting significant recent changes in how and why such attacks are performed. We then investigate the mechanics of malware command and control (C2) establishment: we provide a comprehensive review of the techniques used by attackers to set up such a channel and to hide its presence from the attacked parties and the security tools they use. We then switch to the defensive side of the problem, and review approaches that have been proposed for the detection and disruption of C2 channels.     Performance analysis of bee-hive routing in multi-radio networks

    In recent years, wireless communication technology has reduced the distance between people and has hence become a significant part of our lives. Two such technologies are WiFi(IEEE 802.11) and WiMAX(IEEE 802.16) where the latter is a long range system covering many kilometers, whereas former is a synonym for WLAN providing a coverage of only short ranges. This work describes the implementation of a framework in which a multi-hop, ad-hoc network is deployed with hybrid nodes to enhance network throughput. The data traffic received is split between the WiFi and WiMAX radios on the basis of th e split coefficient value statically.     Based on the information provided by European projects and national initiatives related to multimedia search as well as domains experts that participated in the CHORUS Think-thanks and workshops, this document reports on the state of the art related to multimedia content search from, a technical, and socio-economic perspective. The technical perspective includes an up to date view on content based indexing and retrieval technologies, multimedia search in the context of mobile devices and peer-to-peer networks, and an overview of current evaluation and benchmark inititiatives to measure the performance of multimedia search engines. From a socio-economic perspective we inventorize the impact and legal consequences of these technical advances and point out future directions of research

    Message traceback systems dancing with the devil

    The research community has produced a great deal of work in recent years in the areas of IP, layer 2 and connection-chain traceback. We collectively designate these as message traceback systems which, invariably aim to locate the origin of network data, in spite of any alterations effected to that data (whether legitimately or fraudulently). This thesis provides a unifying definition of spoofing and a classification based on this which aims to encompass all streams of message traceback research. The feasibility of this classification is established through its application to our literature review of the numerous known message traceback systems. We propose two layer 2 (L2) traceback systems, switch-SPIE and COTraSE, which adopt different approaches to logging based L2 traceback for switched ethernet. Whilst message traceback in spite of spoofing is interesting and perhaps more challenging than at first seems, one might say that it is rather academic. Logging of network data is a controversial and unpopular notion and network administrators don't want the added installation and maintenance costs. However, European Parliament Directive 2006/24/EC requires that providers of publicly available electronic communications networks retain data in a form similar to mobile telephony call records, from April 2009 and for periods of up to 2 years. This thesis identifies the relevance of work in all areas of message traceback to the European data retention legislation. In the final part of this thesis we apply our experiences with L2 traceback, together with our definitions and classification of spoofing to discuss the issues that EU data retention implementations should consider. It is possible to 'do logging right' and even safeguard user privacy. However this can only occur if we fully understand the technical challenges, requiring much further work in all areas of logging based, message traceback systems.     This dissertation focuses on real-time control of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) through TCP/IP/IEEE 802.11. Using the MAVLink protocol - an open-source protocol for micro air vehicles - a solution that allows the exchange, in real-time, of control messages between a UAV and a remote Control Station was implemented.     Immunology Inspired Detection of Data Theft from Autonomous Network Activity

    The threat of data theft posed by self-propagating, remotely controlled bot malware is increasing. Cyber criminals are motivated to steal sensitive data, such as user names, passwords, account numbers, and credit card numbers, because these items can be parlayed into cash. For anonymity and economy of scale, bot networks have become the cyber criminal’s weapon of choice. In 2010 a single botnet included over one million compromised host computers, and one of the largest botnets in 2011 was specifically designed to harvest financial data from its victims. Unfortunately, current intrusion detection methods are unable to effectively detect data extraction techniques employed by bot malware. The research described in this Dissertation Report addresses that problem. This work builds on a foundation of research regarding artificial immune systems (AIS) and botnet activity detection. This work is the first to isolate and assess features derived from human computer interaction in the detection of data theft by bot malware and is the first to report on a novel use of the HTTP protocol by a contemporary variant of the Zeus bot
