Digital information support for concept design

    Get PDF
This paper outlines the issues in effective utilisation of digital resources in conceptual design. Access to appropriate information acts as stimuli and can lead to better substantiated concepts. This paper addresses the issues of presenting such information in a digital form for effective use, exploring digital libraries and groupware as relevant literature areas, and argues that improved integration of these two technologies is necessary to better support the concept generation task. The development of the LauLima learning environment and digital library is consequently outlined. Despite its attempts to integrate the designers' working space and digital resources, continuing issues in library utilisation and migration of information to design concepts are highlighted through a class study. In light of this, new models of interaction to increase information use are explored

Experiencing OptiqueVQS: A Multi-paradigm and Ontology-based Visual Query System for End Users

This is author's post-print version, published version available on http://link.springer.com/article/10.1007%2Fs10209-015-0404-5Data access in an enterprise setting is a determining factor for value creation processes, such as sense-making, decision-making, and intelligence analysis. Particularly, in an enterprise setting, intuitive data access tools that directly engage domain experts with data could substantially increase competitiveness and profitability. In this respect, the use of ontologies as a natural communication medium between end users and computers has emerged as a prominent approach. To this end, this article introduces a novel ontology-based visual query system, named OptiqueVQS, for end users. OptiqueVQS is built on a powerful and scalable data access platform and has a user-centric design supported by a widget-based flexible and extensible architecture allowing multiple coordinated representation and interaction paradigms to be employed. The results of a usability experiment performed with non-expert users suggest that OptiqueVQS provides a decent level of expressivity and high usability and hence is quite promising

    A framework for information visualisation

    Get PDF
In this paper we examine the issues involved in developing information visualisation systems and present a framework for their construction. The framework addresses the components which must be considered in providing effective visualisations. The framework is specified using a declarative object oriented language; the resulting object model may be mapped to a variety of graphical user interface development platforms. This provides general support to developers of visualisation systems. A prototype system exists which allows the investigation of alternative visualisations for a range of data sources. The authors conclude with the benefits of this approach and issues requiring further investigation
