The paper is about comparing the performance of digital signal processor-based current controllers for three-phase active power filters. The wide use of nonlinear loads, such as front-end rectifiers connected to the power distribution systems for dc supply or inverter-based applications, causes significant power quality degradation in power distribution networks in terms of current/voltage harmonics, power factor, and resonance problems. Passive LC filters (together with capacitor banks for reactive power compensation) are simple, low-cost, and high-efficiency solution

Analysis and mitigation of dead time harmonics in the single-phase full-bridge PWM converters with repetitive controllers

    Get PDF
In order to prevent the power switching devices (e.g., the Insulated-Gate-Bipolar-Transistor, IGBT) from shoot through in voltage source converters during a switching period, the dead time is added either in the hardware driver circuits of the IGBTs or implemented in software in Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) schemes. Both solutions will contribute to a degradation of the injected current quality. As a consequence, the harmonics induced by the dead time (referred to as "dead time harmonics" hereafter) have to be compensated in order to achieve a satisfactory current quality as required by standards. In this paper, the emission mechanism of dead time harmonics in single-phase PWM inverters is thus presented considering the modulation schemes in details. More importantly, a repetitive controller has been adopted to eliminate the dead time effect in single-phase grid-connected PWM converters. The repetitive controller has been plugged into a proportional resonant-based fundamental current controller so as to mitigate the dead time harmonics and also maintain the control of the fundamental frequency grid current in terms of dynamics. Simulations and experiments are provided, which confirm that the repetitive controller can effectively compensate the dead time harmonics and other low-order distortions, and also it is a simple method without hardware modifications

A NOVEL MATLAB MODEL OF ANN BASED CONTROLLERS TO IMPROVE THE DYNAMIC PERFORMANCE OF A SHUNT ACTIVE POWER FILTER

    Get PDF
This paper attempts to enhance the dynamic performance of a shunt-type active power filter. The predictive and adaptive properties of artificial neural networks (ANNs) are used for fast estimation of the compensating current. The dynamics of the dc-link voltage is utilized in a predictive controller to generate the first estimate followed by convergence of the algorithm by an adaptive ANN (adaline) based network. Weights in adaline are tuned to minimize the total harmonic distortion of the source current. Extensive simulations and experimentations confirm the validity of the proposed scheme for all kinds of load (balanced and unbalanced) for a three-phase three-wire system

Deadbeat predictive current control for circulating currents reduction in a modular multilevel converter based rail power conditioner

    Get PDF
This paper presents a deadbeat predictive current control methodology to reduce the circulating currents in a modular multilevel converter (MMC) when it operates as a rail power conditioner (RPC) in a conventional railway system-based V/V connection. For this purpose, a half-bridge MMC based on half-bridge submodules, operating as an RPC is explained, and the total system is denominated as a simplified rail power conditioner (SRPC). The SRPC in this study is used to compensate harmonics, reactive power, and the negative sequence component of currents. This paper explains the SRPC system architecture, the key control algorithms, and the deadbeat predictive current control methodology. Mathematical analysis, based on the MMC equivalent circuit, is described and the reference equations are presented. Moreover, simulation results of the deadbeat predictive current control methodology are compared with the results of the conventional proportional-integral (PI) controller. This comparison is to verify the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. Simulation results of the SRPC show reduced circulating currents in the MMC phases when using the predictive control approach, besides accomplishing power quality improvement at the three-phase power grid side. This work has been supported by the Portuguese Foundation of Science and Technology (FCT), in Portuguese, Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia within the R&D Units Project Scope: UIDB/00319/2020 and PTDC/EEI-EEE/28813/2017. Harmonics Mitigation and Non-Ideal Voltage Compensation Utilizing Active Power Filter Based On Predictive Current Control

It is well-known that the presence of non-linear loads in the distribution system can impair the power quality. The problem becomes worse in microgrids and power electronic-based power systems as the increasing penetration of single-phase distributed generation may result in a more unbalanced grid voltage. Shunt active power filters (SAPFs) are used for improving the power quality and compensating for the unbalance grid voltage. This study presents a modification of the classical control structure based on the finite control set model predictive control (FCS-MPC). The proposed control structure can retain all the advantages of FCS-MPC, while improving the input current quality. Furthermore, a computationally efficient cost function based on only a single objective is introduced, and its effect on reducing the current ripple is demonstrated. The presented solution provides a fast response to the transients as well as compensates for the unbalanced grid voltage conditions. A straightforward single loop controller is compared to the conventional way of realising the active power filters, which is based on space vector pulse width modulation. The simulation results have been obtained from MATLAB/SIMULINK environment, while the obtained experimental results, utilising a 15 kVA power converter, highlight the effective performance of the proposed control scheme and verifies the introduced MPC-based method as a viable control solution for SAPFs

PQ issues are raised not only in normal three-phase systems but also with the incorporation of different distributed generations (DGs), including renewable energy sources, storage systems, and other systems like diesel generators, fuel cells, etc. The prevalence of these issues comes from the non-linear features and rapid changing of power electronics devices, such as switch-mode converters for adjustable speed drives and diode or thyristor rectifiers. The wide use of these fast switching devices in the utility system leads to an increase in disturbances associated with harmonics and reactive power. The occurrence of PQ disturbances in turn creates several unwanted effects on the utility system. Therefore, many researchers are working on the enhancement of PQ using different custom power devices (CPDs). In this work, the authors highlight the significance of the PQ in the utility network, its effect, and its solution, using different CPDs, such as passive, active, and hybrid filters. Further, the authors point out several compensation strategies, including reference signal generation and gating signal strategies. In addition, this paper also presents the role of the active power filter (APF) in different DG systems. Some technical and economic considerations and future developments are also discussed in this literature. For easy reference, a volume of journals of more than 140 publications on this particular subject is reported. The effectiveness of this research work will boost researchers’ ability to select proper control methodology and compensation strategy for various applications of APFs for improving PQ.publishedVersio
