Sub-word indexing and blind relevance feedback for English, Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi IR
The Forum for Information Retrieval Evaluation (FIRE) provides document collections, topics, and relevance assessments for information retrieval (IR) experiments on Indian languages. Several research questions are explored in this paper: 1. how to create create a simple, languageindependent corpus-based stemmer, 2. how to identify sub-words and which types of sub-words are suitable as indexing units, and 3. how to apply blind relevance feedback on sub-words and how feedback term selection is affected by the type of the indexing unit. More than 140 IR experiments are conducted using the BM25 retrieval model on the topic titles and descriptions (TD) for the FIRE 2008 English, Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi document collections. The major findings are: The corpus-based stemming approach is effective as a knowledge-light
term conation step and useful in case of few language-specific resources. For English, the corpusbased
stemmer performs nearly as well as the Porter stemmer and significantly better than the baseline of indexing words when combined with query expansion. In combination with blind relevance feedback, it also performs significantly better than the baseline for Bengali and Marathi IR.
Sub-words such as consonant-vowel sequences and word prefixes can yield similar or better performance in comparison to word indexing. There is no best performing method for all languages. For English, indexing using the Porter stemmer performs best, for Bengali and Marathi, overlapping 3-grams obtain the best result, and for Hindi, 4-prefixes yield the highest MAP. However, in combination with blind relevance feedback using 10 documents and 20 terms, 6-prefixes for English and 4-prefixes for Bengali, Hindi, and Marathi IR yield the highest MAP. Sub-word identification is a general case of decompounding. It results in one or more index terms for a single word form and increases the number of index terms but decreases their average length. The corresponding retrieval experiments show that relevance feedback on sub-words benefits from
selecting a larger number of index terms in comparison with retrieval on word forms. Similarly, selecting the number of relevance feedback terms depending on the ratio of word vocabulary size to sub-word vocabulary size almost always slightly increases information retrieval effectiveness
compared to using a fixed number of terms for different languages
Building a Generation Knowledge Source using Internet-Accessible Newswire
In this paper, we describe a method for automatic creation of a knowledge
source for text generation using information extraction over the Internet. We
present a prototype system called PROFILE which uses a client-server
architecture to extract noun-phrase descriptions of entities such as people,
places, and organizations. The system serves two purposes: as an information
extraction tool, it allows users to search for textual descriptions of
entities; as a utility to generate functional descriptions (FD), it is used in
a functional-unification based generation system. We present an evaluation of
the approach and its applications to natural language generation and

Concept-based Interactive Query Expansion Support Tool (CIQUEST)
This report describes a three-year project (2000-03) undertaken in the Information Studies
Department at The University of Sheffield and funded by Resource, The Council for
Museums, Archives and Libraries. The overall aim of the research was to provide user
support for query formulation and reformulation in searching large-scale textual resources
including those of the World Wide Web. More specifically the objectives were: to investigate
and evaluate methods for the automatic generation and organisation of concepts derived from
retrieved document sets, based on statistical methods for term weighting; and to conduct
user-based evaluations on the understanding, presentation and retrieval effectiveness of
concept structures in selecting candidate terms for interactive query expansion.
The TREC test collection formed the basis for the seven evaluative experiments conducted in
the course of the project. These formed four distinct phases in the project plan. In the first
phase, a series of experiments was conducted to investigate further techniques for concept
derivation and hierarchical organisation and structure. The second phase was concerned with
user-based validation of the concept structures. Results of phases 1 and 2 informed on the
design of the test system and the user interface was developed in phase 3. The final phase
entailed a user-based summative evaluation of the CiQuest system.
The main findings demonstrate that concept hierarchies can effectively be generated from
sets of retrieved documents and displayed to searchers in a meaningful way. The approach
provides the searcher with an overview of the contents of the retrieved documents, which in
turn facilitates the viewing of documents and selection of the most relevant ones. Concept
hierarchies are a good source of terms for query expansion and can improve precision. The
extraction of descriptive phrases as an alternative source of terms was also effective. With
respect to presentation, cascading menus were easy to browse for selecting terms and for
viewing documents. In conclusion the project dissemination programme and future work are

Unnamed locations, underspecified regions, and other linguistic phenomena in geographic annotation of water-based locations
This short paper investigates how locations in or close to
water masses in topics and documents (e.g. rivers, seas,
oceans) are referred to. For this study, 13 topics from the
GeoCLEF topics 2005-2008 aiming at documents on rivers,
oceans, or sea names were selected and the corresponding
relevant documents retrieved and manually annotated. Results of the geographic annotation indicate that i) topics aiming at locations close to water contain a wide variety of spatial relations (indicated by dierent prepositions), ii)
unnamed locations can be generated on-the-fly by referring
to movable objects (e.g. ships, planes) travelling along a
path, iii) underspecied regions are referenced by proximity
or distance or directional relations. In addition, several
generic expressions (e.g. "in international waters") are frequently used, but refer to different underspecified regions
Cross-lingual document retrieval categorisation and navigation based on distributed services
The widespread use of the Internet across countries has increased the need for access to document collections
that are often written in languages different from a user’s native language. In this paper we describe Clarity, a
Cross Language Information Retrieval (CLIR) system for English, Finnish, Swedish, Latvian and Lithuanian.
Clarity is a fully-fledged retrieval system that supports the user during the whole process of query formulation,
text retrieval and document browsing. We address four of the major aspects of Clarity: (i) the user-driven
methodology that formed the basis for the iterative design cycle and framework in the project, (ii) the system
architecture that was developed to support the interaction and coordination of Clarity’s distributed services, (iii)
the data resources and methods for query translation, and (iv) the support for Baltic languages. Clarity is an
example of a distributed CLIR system built with minimal translation resources and, to our knowledge, the only
such system that currently supports Baltic languages
Report of MIRACLE team for the Ad-Hoc track in CLEF 2006
This paper presents the 2006 MIRACLE’s team approach to the AdHoc Information Retrieval track. The experiments for this campaign keep on testing our IR approach. First, a baseline set of runs is obtained, including standard components: stemming, transforming, filtering, entities detection and extracting, and others. Then, a extended set of runs is obtained using several types of combinations of these baseline runs. The improvements introduced for this campaign have been a few ones: we have used an entity recognition and indexing prototype tool into our tokenizing scheme, and we have run more combining experiments for the robust multilingual case than in previous campaigns. However, no significative improvements have been achieved. For the this campaign, runs were submitted for the following languages and tracks: - Monolingual: Bulgarian, French, Hungarian, and Portuguese. - Bilingual: English to Bulgarian, French, Hungarian, and Portuguese; Spanish to French and Portuguese; and French to Portuguese. - Robust monolingual: German, English, Spanish, French, Italian, and Dutch. - Robust bilingual: English to German, Italian to Spanish, and French to Dutch. - Robust multilingual: English to robust monolingual languages. We still need to work harder to improve some aspects of our processing scheme, being the most important, to our knowledge, the entities recognition and normalization
Search of spoken documents retrieves well recognized transcripts
This paper presents a series of analyses and experiments on spoken
document retrieval systems: search engines that retrieve transcripts produced by
speech recognizers. Results show that transcripts that match queries well tend to
be recognized more accurately than transcripts that match a query less well.
This result was described in past literature, however, no study or explanation of
the effect has been provided until now. This paper provides such an analysis
showing a relationship between word error rate and query length. The paper
expands on past research by increasing the number of recognitions systems that
are tested as well as showing the effect in an operational speech retrieval
system. Potential future lines of enquiry are also described
