MIMO signal processing in offset-QAM based filter bank multicarrier systems
Next-generation communication systems have to comply with very strict requirements for increased flexibility in heterogeneous environments, high spectral efficiency, and agility of carrier aggregation. This fact motivates research in advanced multicarrier modulation (MCM) schemes, such as filter bank-based multicarrier (FBMC) modulation. This paper focuses on the offset quadrature amplitude modulation (OQAM)-based FBMC variant, known as FBMC/OQAM, which presents outstanding spectral efficiency and confinement in a number of channels and applications. Its special nature, however, generates a number of new signal processing challenges that are not present in other MCM schemes, notably, in orthogonal-frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM). In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) architectures, which are expected to play a primary role in future communication systems, these challenges are intensified, creating new interesting research problems and calling for new ideas and methods that are adapted to the particularities of the MIMO-FBMC/OQAM system. The goal of this paper is to focus on these signal processing problems and provide a concise yet comprehensive overview of the recent advances in this area. Open problems and associated directions for future research are also discussed.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
Advanced transmitter and receivers in future wireless networks
The main purpose of this dissertation is the study of technologies that allow achieving more reliable and efficient communications in wireless systems. One of the technologies studied in this dissertation and practically new is the Complex Rotation Matrix (CRM). This technology is useful in systems that use multi-carrier as the Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM). The hierarchical constellations are other theme approached in this dissertation and it purpose efficiently is to deliver the same content to different users. Another technology studied in this dissertation was the Single Carrier (SC) with Frequency Division Equalization. The SC is a well-know technology and is used in several telecommunications systems. The goal is the future wireless communications adopt the two technologies in the same system and use one of them depending of the situation.
The Digital Video Broadcasting – Satellite services to Handhelds (DVB-SH) is one standard that can take advantage of the using of the OFDM and SC in the same system. The main goal of the DVB-SH is deliver multimedia content via satellite communications or communications with base stations to mobile terminals. The mobile terminals can achieve a more efficiency in their batteries whether in a standard/protocol that uses OFDM in DL and SC in UL.
The results obtained with this thesis have the purpose to study the CRM, channel estimation and hierarchical constellation. The simulators were developed in Matlab platform and Turbo Codes are the codification used, channel estimation is also used and all the simulations were made with the Monte Carlo method
A random access MAC protocol for MPR satellite networks
with the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of multimedia tra c, especially when hand-held devices must operate with very low power.
Cross-Layered optimization architectures, combined with Multipacket Reception (MPR)schemes are a good choice to enhance the overall performance of a wireless system. Hybrid
Network-assisted Diversity Multiple Access (H-NDMA) protocol, exhibits high energy e ciency, with MPR capability, but its use with satellites is limited by the high round trip time. This protocol was adapted to satellites, in Satellite-NDMA, but it required a pre-reservation mechanism that introduces a signi cant delay.
This dissertation proposes a random access protocol that uses H-NDMA, for Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite networks, named Satellite Random-NDMA (SR-NDMA). The protocol addresses the problem inherent to satellite networks (large round trip time and signi cant energy consumption) de ning a hybrid approach with an initial random access plus possible additional scheduled retransmissions. An MPR receiver combines the multiple copies received, gradually reducing the error rate. Analytical performance models are proposed for the throughput, delay, jitter and energy e ciency considering nite queues at the terminals. It is also addressed the energy e ciency optimization, where the system
parameters are calculated to guarantee the QoS requirements.
The proposed system's performance is evaluated for a Single-Carrier with Frequency Domain Equalization (SC-FDE) receiver. Results show that the proposed system is energy e cient and can provide enough QoS to support services such as video telephony
Enabling Technology and Algorithm Design for Location-Aware Communications
Location-awareness is emerging as a promising technique for future-generation wire less network to adaptively enhance and optimize its overall performance through location-enabled technologies such as location-assisted transceiver reconfiguration and routing. The availability of accurate location information of mobile users becomes the essential prerequisite for the design of such location-aware networks. Motivated by the low locationing accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS) in dense multipath environments, which is commonly used for acquiring location information in most of the existing wireless networks, wireless communication system-based positioning systems have been investigated as alternatives to fill the gap of the GPS in coverage. Distance-based location techniques using time-of-arrival (TOA) measurements are commonly preferred by broadband wireless communications where the arrival time of the signal component of the First Arriving Path (FAP) can be converted to the distance between the receiver and the transmitter with known location. With at least three transmitters, the location of the receiver can be determined via trilatération method. However, identification of the FAP’s signal component in dense multipath scenarios is quite challenging due to the significantly weaker power of the FAP as compared with the Later Arriving Paths (LAPs) from scattering, reflection and refraction, and the superposition of these random arrival LAPs’ signal compo nents will become large interference to detect the FAP. In this thesis, a robust FAP detection scheme based on multipath interference cancellation is proposed to im prove the accuracy of location estimation in dense multipath environments. In the proposed algorithm, the signal components of LAPs is reconstructed based on the estimated channel and data with the assist of the communication receiver, and sub sequently removed from the received signal. Accurate FAP detection results are then achieved with the cross-correlation between the interference-suppressed signal and an augmented preamble which is the combination of the original preamble for com munications and the demodulated data sequences. Therefore, more precise distance estimation (hence location estimation) can be obtained with the proposed algorithm for further reliable network optimization strategy design.
On the other hand, multiceli cooperative communication is another emerging technique to substantially improve the coverage and throughput of traditional cellular networks. Location-awareness also plays an important role in the design and implementation of multiceli cooperation technique. With accurate location information of mobile users, the complexity of multiceli cooperation algorithm design can be dramatically reduced by location-assisted applications, e.g., automatic cooperative base station (BS) determination and signal synchronization. Therefore, potential latency aroused by cooperative processing will be minimized. Furthermore, the cooperative BSs require the sharing of certain information, e.g., channel state information (CSI), user data and transmission parameters to perform coordination in their signaling strategies. The BSs need to have the capabilities to exchange available information with each other to follow up with the time-varying communication environment. As most of broadband wireless communication systems are already orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based, a Multi-Layered OFDM System, which is specially tailored for multiceli cooperation is investigated to provide parallel robust, efficient and flexible signaling links for BS coordination purposes. These layers are overlaid with data-carrying OFDM signals in both time and frequency domains and therefore, no dedicated radio resources are required for multiceli cooperative networks.
In the final aspect of this thesis, an enhanced channel estimation through itera tive decision-directed method is investigated for OFDM system, which aims to provide more accurate estimation results with the aid of the demodulated OFDM data. The performance of traditional training sequence-based channel estimation is often lim ited by the length of the training. To achieve acceptable estimation performance, a long sequence has to be used which dramatically reduces the transmission efficiency of data communication. In this proposed method, the restriction of the training sequence length can be removed and high channel estimation accuracy can be achieved with high transmission efficiency, and therefore it particular fits in multiceli cooperative networks. On the other hand, as the performance of the proposed FAP detection scheme also relies on the accuracy of channel estimation and data detection results, the proposed method can be combined with the FAP detection scheme to further optimize the accuracy of multipath interference cancellation and FAP detection
Quantifying Potential Energy Efficiency Gain in Green Cellular Wireless Networks
Conventional cellular wireless networks were designed with the purpose of
providing high throughput for the user and high capacity for the service
provider, without any provisions of energy efficiency. As a result, these
networks have an enormous Carbon footprint. In this paper, we describe the
sources of the inefficiencies in such networks. First we present results of the
studies on how much Carbon footprint such networks generate. We also discuss
how much more mobile traffic is expected to increase so that this Carbon
footprint will even increase tremendously more. We then discuss specific
sources of inefficiency and potential sources of improvement at the physical
layer as well as at higher layers of the communication protocol hierarchy. In
particular, considering that most of the energy inefficiency in cellular
wireless networks is at the base stations, we discuss multi-tier networks and
point to the potential of exploiting mobility patterns in order to use base
station energy judiciously. We then investigate potential methods to reduce
this inefficiency and quantify their individual contributions. By a
consideration of the combination of all potential gains, we conclude that an
improvement in energy consumption in cellular wireless networks by two orders
of magnitude, or even more, is possible.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1210.843
Multiuser MIMO-OFDM for Next-Generation Wireless Systems
This overview portrays the 40-year evolution of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) research. The amelioration of powerful multicarrier OFDM arrangements with multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems has numerous benefits, which are detailed in this treatise. We continue by highlighting the limitations of conventional detection and channel estimation techniques designed for multiuser MIMO OFDM systems in the so-called rank-deficient scenarios, where the number of users supported or the number of transmit antennas employed exceeds the number of receiver antennas. This is often encountered in practice, unless we limit the number of users granted access in the base station’s or radio port’s coverage area. Following a historical perspective on the associated design problems and their state-of-the-art solutions, the second half of this treatise details a range of classic multiuser detectors (MUDs) designed for MIMO-OFDM systems and characterizes their achievable performance. A further section aims for identifying novel cutting-edge genetic algorithm (GA)-aided detector solutions, which have found numerous applications in wireless communications in recent years. In an effort to stimulate the cross pollination of ideas across the machine learning, optimization, signal processing, and wireless communications research communities, we will review the broadly applicable principles of various GA-assisted optimization techniques, which were recently proposed also for employment inmultiuser MIMO OFDM. In order to stimulate new research, we demonstrate that the family of GA-aided MUDs is capable of achieving a near-optimum performance at the cost of a significantly lower computational complexity than that imposed by their optimum maximum-likelihood (ML) MUD aided counterparts. The paper is concluded by outlining a range of future research options that may find their way into next-generation wireless systems
Energy-efficient diversity combining for different access schemes in a multi-path dispersive channel
Dissertação para obtenção do Grau de Doutor em
Engenharia Electrotécnica e ComputadoresThe forthcoming generation of mobile communications, 5G, will settle a new standard for a larger bandwidth and better Quality of Service (QoS). With the exploding growth rate of user generated data, wireless
standards must cope with this growth and at the same time be energy efficient to avoid depleting the batteries of wireless devices. Besides these issues, in a broadband wireless setting QoS can be severely affected from a multipath dispersive channel and therefore be energy demanding.
Cross-layered architectures are a good choice to enhance the overall performance of a wireless system.
Examples of cross-layered Physical (PHY) - Medium Access Control (MAC) architectures are type-II Diversity Combining (DC) Hybrid-ARQ (H-ARQ) and Multi-user Detection (MUD) schemes. Cross-layered type-II DC H-ARQ schemes reuse failed packet transmissions to enhance data reception on posterior retransmissions; MUD schemes reuse data information from previously collided packets on posterior retransmissions to enhance data reception. For a multipath dispersive channel, a PHY layer analytical
model is proposed for Single-Carrier with Frequency Domain Equalization (SC-FDE) that supports DC H-ARQ and MUD. Based on this analytical model, three PHY-MAC protocols are proposed. A crosslayered Time Division Multiple Access (TDMA) scheme that uses DC H-ARQ is modeled and its performance is studied in this document; the performance analysis shows that the scheme performs better with DC and achieves a better energy efficiency at the cost of a higher delay. A novel cross-layered prefix-assisted Direct-Sequence Code Division Multiple Access (DS-CDMA) scheme is proposed and modeled in this document, it uses principles of DC and MUD. This protocol performs better by means
of additional retransmissions, achieving better energy efficiency, at the cost of higher redundancy from a code spreading gain. Finally, a novel cross-layered protocol H-ARQ Network Division Multiple Access (H-NDMA) is proposed and modeled, where the combination of DC H-ARQ and MUD is used with the intent of maximizing the system capacity with a lower delay; system results show that the proposed scheme achieves better energy efficiency and a better performance at the cost of a higher number of retransmissions.
A comparison of the three cross-layered protocols is made, using the PHY analytical model, under normalized conditions using the same amount of maximum redundancy. Results show that the H-NDMA protocol, in general, obtains the best results, achieving a good performance and a good energy efficiency
for a high channel load and low Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). TDMA with DC H-ARQ achieves the best energy efficiency, although presenting the worst delay. Prefix-assisted DS-CDMA in the other hand shows good delay results but presents the worst throughput and energy efficiency
