    FollowMe: Efficient Online Min-Cost Flow Tracking with Bounded Memory and Computation

    One of the most popular approaches to multi-target tracking is tracking-by-detection. Current min-cost flow algorithms which solve the data association problem optimally have three main drawbacks: they are computationally expensive, they assume that the whole video is given as a batch, and they scale badly in memory and computation with the length of the video sequence. In this paper, we address each of these issues, resulting in a computationally and memory-bounded solution. First, we introduce a dynamic version of the successive shortest-path algorithm which solves the data association problem optimally while reusing computation, resulting in significantly faster inference than standard solvers. Second, we address the optimal solution to the data association problem when dealing with an incoming stream of data (i.e., online setting). Finally, we present our main contribution which is an approximate online solution with bounded memory and computation which is capable of handling videos of arbitrarily length while performing tracking in real time. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our algorithms on the KITTI and PETS2009 benchmarks and show state-of-the-art performance, while being significantly faster than existing solvers

    Multitarget tracking via restless bandit marginal productivity indices and Kalman Filter in discrete time

    This paper designs, evaluates, and tests a tractable priority-index policy for scheduling target updates in a discrete-time multitarget tracking model, which aims to be close to optimal relative to a discounted or average performance objective accounting for tracking-error variance and measurement costs. The policy is to be used by a sensor system composed of M phased-array radars coordinated to track the positions of N targets moving according to independent scalar Gauss-Markov linear dynamics, which therefore allows for the use of the Kalman Filter for track estimation. The paper exploits the natural problem formulation as a multiarmed restless bandit problem (MARBP) with real-state projects subject to deterministic dynamics by deploying Whittle's (1988) index policy for the MARBP. The challenging issues of indexability (existence of the index) and index evaluation are resolved by applying a method recently introduced by the first author for the analysis of real-state restless bandits. Computational results are reported demonstrating the tractability of index evaluation, the substantial performance gains that the Whittle's marginal productivity (MP) index policy achieves against myopic policies advocated in previous work and the resulting index policies suboptimality gaps.     Collaborative Trajectory Planning and Resource Allocation for Multi-Target Tracking in Airborne Radar Networks under Spectral Coexistence

    This paper develops a collaborative trajectory planning and resource allocation (CTPRA) strategy for multi-target tracking (MTT) in a spectral coexistence environment utilizing airborne radar networks. The key mechanism of the proposed strategy is to jointly design the flight trajectory and optimize the radar assignment, transmit power, dwell time, and signal effective bandwidth allocation of multiple airborne radars, aiming to enhance the MTT performance under the constraints of the tolerable threshold of interference energy, platform kinematic limitations, and given illumination resource budgets. The closed-form expression for the Bayesian Cramér–Rao lower bound (BCRLB) under the consideration of spectral coexistence is calculated and adopted as the optimization criterion of the CTPRA strategy. It is shown that the formulated CTPRA problem is a mixed-integer programming, non-linear, non-convex optimization model owing to its highly coupled Boolean and continuous parameters. By incorporating semi-definite programming (SDP), particle swarm optimization (PSO), and the cyclic minimization technique, an iterative four-stage solution methodology is proposed to tackle the formulated optimization problem efficiently. The numerical results validate the effectiveness and the MTT performance improvement of the proposed CTPRA strategy in comparison with other benchmarks

    Detection of a signal in linear subspace with bounded mismatch

    We consider the problem of detecting a signal of interest in a background of noise with unknown covariance matrix, taking into account a possible mismatch between the actual steering vector and the presumed one. We assume that the former belongs to a known linear subspace, up to a fraction of its energy. When the subspace of interest consists of the presumed steering vector, this amounts to assuming that the angle between the actual steering vector and the presumed steering vector is upper bounded. Within this framework, we derive the generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT). We show that it involves solving a minimization problem with the constraint that the signal of interest lies inside a cone. We present a computationally efficient algorithm to find the maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) based on the Lagrange multiplier technique. Numerical simulations illustrate the performance and the robustness of this new detector, and compare it with the adaptive coherence estimator which assumes that the steering vector lies entirely in a subspace

    Radar networks: A review of features and challenges

    Networks of multiple radars are typically used for improving the coverage and tracking accuracy. Recently, such networks have facilitated deployment of commercial radars for civilian applications such as healthcare, gesture recognition, home security, and autonomous automobiles. They exploit advanced signal processing techniques together with efficient data fusion methods in order to yield high performance of event detection and tracking. This paper reviews outstanding features of radar networks, their challenges, and their state-of-the-art solutions from the perspective of signal processing.
