    Smart Signs: Showing the way in Smart Surroundings

    This paper presents a context-aware guidance and messaging system for large buildings and surrounding venues. Smart Signs are a new type of electronic door- and way-sign based on wireless sensor networks. Smart Signs present in-situ personalized guidance and messages, are ubiquitous, and easy to understand. They combine the easiness of use of traditional static signs with the flexibility and reactiveness of navigation systems. The Smart Signs system uses context information such as user’s mobility limitations, the weather, and possible emergency situations to improve guidance and messaging. Minimal infrastructure requirements and a simple deployment tool make it feasible to easily deploy a Smart Signs system on demand. An important design issue of the Smart Signs system is privacy: the system secures communication links, does not track users, allow almost complete anonymous use, and prevent the system to be used as a tool for spying on users

    Personalised privacy in pervasive and ubiquitous systems

    Our world is edging closer to the realisation of pervasive systems and their integration in our everyday life. While pervasive systems are capable of offering many benefits for everyone, the amount and quality of personal information that becomes available raise concerns about maintaining user privacy and create a real need to reform existing privacy practices and provide appropriate safeguards for the user of pervasive environments. This thesis presents the PERSOnalised Negotiation, Identity Selection and Management (PersoNISM) system; a comprehensive approach to privacy protection in pervasive environments using context aware dynamic personalisation and behaviour learning. The aim of the PersoNISM system is twofold: to provide the user with a comprehensive set of privacy protecting tools and to help them make the best use of these tools according to their privacy needs. The PersoNISM system allows users to: a) configure the terms and conditions of data disclosure through the process of privacy policy negotiation, which addresses the current “take it or leave it” approach; b) use multiple identities to interact with pervasive services to avoid the accumulation of vast amounts of personal information in a single user profile; and c) selectively disclose information based on the type of information, who requests it, under what context, for what purpose and how the information will be treated. The PersoNISM system learns user privacy preferences by monitoring the behaviour of the user and uses them to personalise and/or automate the decision making processes in order to unburden the user from manually controlling these complex mechanisms. The PersoNISM system has been designed, implemented, demonstrated and evaluated during three EU funded projects

    Contributions to the security of cognitive radio networks

    The increasing emergence of wireless applications along with the static spectrum allocation followed by regulatory bodies has led to a high inefficiency in spectrum usage, and the lack of spectrum for new services. In this context, Cognitive Radio (CR) technology has been proposed as a possible solution to reuse the spectrum being underutilized by licensed services. CRs are intelligent devices capable of sensing the medium and identifying those portions of the spectrum being unused. Based on their current perception of the environment and on that learned from past experiences, they can optimally tune themselves with regard to parameters such as frequency, coding and modulation, among others. Due to such properties, Cognitive Radio Networks (CRNs) can act as secondary users of the spectrum left unused by their legal owners or primary users, under the requirement of not interfering primary communications. The successful deployment of these networks relies on the proper design of mechanisms in order to efficiently detect spectrum holes, adapt to changing environment conditions and manage the available spectrum. Furthermore, the need for addressing security issues is evidenced by two facts. First, as for any other type of wireless network, the air is used as communications medium and can easily be accessed by attackers. On the other hand, the particular attributes of CRNs offer new opportunities to malicious users, ranging from providing wrong information on the radio environment to disrupting the cognitive mechanisms, which could severely undermine the operation of these networks. In this Ph.D thesis we have approached the challenge of securing Cognitive Radio Networks. Because CR technology is still evolving, to achieve this goal involves not only providing countermeasures for existing attacks but also to identify new potential threats and evaluate their impact on CRNs performance. The main contributions of this thesis can be summarized as follows. First, a critical study on the State of the Art in this area is presented. A qualitative analysis of those threats to CRNs already identified in the literature is provided, and the efficacy of existing countermeasures is discussed. Based on this work, a set of guidelines are designed in order to design a detection system for the main threats to CRNs. Besides, a high level description of the components of this system is provided, being it the second contribution of this thesis. The third contribution is the proposal of a new cross-layer attack to the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) in CRNs. An analytical model of the impact of this attack on the throughput of TCP connections is derived, and a set of countermeasures in order to detect and mitigate the effect of such attack are proposed. One of the main threats to CRNs is the Primary User Emulation (PUE) attack. This attack prevents CRNs from using available portions of the spectrum and can even lead to a Denial of Service (DoS). In the fourth contribution of this the method is proposed in order to deal with such attack. The method relies on a set of time measures provided by the members of the network and allows estimating the position of an emitter. This estimation is then used to determine the legitimacy of a given transmission and detect PUE attacks. Cooperative methods are prone to be disrupted by malicious nodes reporting false data. This problem is addressed, in the context of cooperative location, in the fifth and last contribution of this thesis. A method based on Least Median Squares (LMS) fitting is proposed in order to detect forged measures and make the location process robust to them. The efficiency and accuracy of the proposed methodologies are demonstrated by means of simulation

    Families_Share: digital and social innovation for work–life balance

    Purpose: The European H2020 Families_Share project aims at offering a grass-root approach and a co-designed platform supporting families for sharing time and tasks related to childcare, parenting, after-school and leisure activities and other household tasks. To achieve this objective, the Families_Share project has been built on current practices which are already leveraging on mutual help and support among families, such as Time Banks, Social Streets and self-organizing networks of parents active at the neighbourhood level and seek to harness the potential of ICT networks and mobile technologies to increase the effectiveness of participatory innovation. The aim of this paper is to present and discuss the Families_Share methodology and platform, as well as the results obtained by several partecipating communities in different European countries. Design/methodology/approach: This paper discusses how the Families Share approach (CAPS project, Horizon 2020) is bringing the sharing economy to childcare. Families Share developed a co-caring approach and a co-designed digital welfare platform to support parents with sharing time and tasks related to childcare, after-school and leisure activities. Families Share conducted two iterative pilot experiments and related socio-economic evaluations in six European cities. More than 3,000 citizens were engaged in the co-design process through their local community organizations and more than 1,700 parents and children actively experimented with the approach by organizing collaborative childcare activities. The authors discuss the challenges and solutions of co-designing a socio-technical approach aimed at facilitating socially innovative childcare models, and how the Families Share approach, based on technology-supported co-production of childcare, may provide a new sustainable welfare model for municipalities and companies with respect to life––work balance. Originality/value: As a main difference with state-of-the-art proposals, Families_Share is aimed to provide support to networks of parents in the organization of self-managed activities, this way being orthogonal with respect either to social-network functionalities or to supply and demand services. Furthermore, Families_Share has been based on a participative approach for both the ICT platform and the overall structure

    Institutionalizing Analytic Data Sharing in SME Ecosystems – A Role-Based Perspective

    There is a variety of reasons that sharing data among Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (SMEs) carries business potential, particularly for analyti-cal applications. But outside a few niche domains, the number of success stories for data sharing is rather modest. Based on a qualitative study and first experiences from a research project with pilot im-plementations, we argue that this is mainly due to a lack of an institutionalized governance structure: Founding a separate legal entity for data sharing and analysis can address core concerns regarding sharing valuable data assets. However, this requires a well-calibrated set of defined roles for the in-volved partners. Based on our results we propose a first concept on delineating and mapping out those roles

    People, Land, Arts, Culture and Engagement: Taking Stock of the Place Initiative

    This report serves as a point of entry into creative placemaking as defined and supported by the Tucson Pima Arts Council's PLACE Initiative. To assess how and to what degree the PLACE projects were helping to transform communities, TPAC was asked by the Kresge Foundation to undertake a comprehensive evaluation. This involved discussion with stakeholders about support mechanisms, professional development, investment, and impact of the PLACE Initiative in Tucson, Arizona, and the Southwest regionally and the gathering of qualitative and quantitative data to develop indicators and method for evaluating the social impact of the arts in TPAC's grantmaking. The report documents one year of observations and research by the PLACE research team, outside researchers and reviewers, local and regional working groups, TPAC staff, and TPAC constituency. It considers data from the first four years of PLACE Initiative funding, including learning exchanges, focus groups, individual interviews, grantmaking, and all reporting. It is also informed by evaluation and assessment that occurred in the development of the PLACE Initiative, in particular, Maribel Alvarez's Two-Way Mirror: Ethnography as a Way to Assess Civic Impact of Arts-Based Engagement in Tucson, Arizona (2009), and Mark Stern and Susan Seifert's Documenting Civic Engagement: A Plan for the Tucson Pima Arts Council (2009). Both of these publications were supported by Animating Democracy, a program of Americans for the Arts, that promotes arts and culture as potent contributors to community, civic, and social change. Both publications describe how TPAC approaches evaluation strategies associated with social impact of the arts in Tucson and Pima County. This report outlines the local context and historical antecedents of the PLACE Initiative in the region with an emphasis on the concept of "belonging" as a primary characteristic of PLACE projects and policy. It describes PLACE projects as well as the role of TPAC in creating and facilitating the Initiative. Based on the collective understanding of the research team, impacts of the PLACE Initiative are organized into three main realms -- institutions, artists, and communities. These realms are further addressed in case studies from select grantees, whose narratives offer rich, detailed perspectives about PLACE projects in context, with all their successes, rewards, and challenges for artists, communities, and institutions. Lastly, the report offers preliminary research findings on PLACE by TPAC in collaboration with Dr. James Roebuck, codirector of the University of Arizona's ERAD (Evaluation Research and Development) Program

    Tips of the Triangle Exploring three-way partnerships for Organisational Development

    During its last phase of activity (2016-2022), the MAVA Foundation invested in organisational development (OD) partnerships of some of its close partners, for them to be better prepared for the end of our funding support. Some of these OD partnerships were structured in a triangular way between the partner organisation, an external consultant, and the MAVA Foundation as funder.'Tips of the Triangle – Exploring three-way partnerships for Organisational Development' is a new publication by MAVA and Stone-Soup Consulting. After 6 years of implementation and with a wealth of shared experience, we have undertaken a reflection with partner organisations (Fundação Tartaruga, Turtle Foundation and Fundação Maio Biodiversidade), independent consultants (Rosa Matos, Cláudia Pedra, Mathilde Bullot) and Stone-Soup Consulting (Liliana Dias and Agustina O'Farrell) to draw the main lessons from these three-way partnerships
