    RGtk2: A Graphical User Interface Toolkit for R

    Graphical user interfaces (GUIs) are growing in popularity as a complement or alternative to the traditional command line interfaces to R. RGtk2 is an R package for creating GUIs in R. The package provides programmatic access to GTK+ 2.0, an open-source GUI toolkit written in C. To construct a GUI, the R programmer calls RGtk2 functions that map to functions in the underlying GTK+ library. This paper introduces the basic concepts underlying GTK+ and explains how to use RGtk2 to construct GUIs from R. The tutorial is based on simple and pratical programming examples. We also provide more complex examples illustrating the advanced features of the package. The design of the RGtk2 API and the low-level interface from R to GTK+ are discussed at length. We compare RGtk2 to alternative GUI toolkits for R.

    Creating a Semantic Graph from Wikipedia

    With the continued need to organize and automate the use of data, solutions are needed to transform unstructred text into structred information. By treating dependency grammar functions as programming language functions, this process produces \property maps which connect entities (people, places, events) with snippets of information. These maps are used to construct a semantic graph. By inputting Wikipedia, a large graph of information is produced representing a section of history.     Generating collaborative systems for digital libraries: A model-driven approach

Copyright @ 2010 The Authors.The design and development of a digital library involves different stakeholders, such as: information architects, librarians, and domain experts, who need to agree on a common language to describe, discuss, and negotiate the services the library has to offer. To this end, high-level, language-neutral models have to be devised. Metamodeling techniques favor the definition of domainspecific visual languages through which stakeholders can share their views and directly manipulate representations of the domain entities. This paper describes CRADLE (Cooperative-Relational Approach to Digital Library Environments), a metamodel-based framework and visual language for the definition of notions and services related to the development of digital libraries. A collection of tools allows the automatic generation of several services, defined with the CRADLE visual language, and of the graphical user interfaces providing access to them for the final user. The effectiveness of the approach is illustrated by presenting digital libraries generated with CRADLE, while the CRADLE environment has been evaluated by using the cognitive dimensions framework

    Comparing Extant Story Classifiers: Results & New Directions

    Having access to a large set of stories is a necessary first step for robust and wide-ranging computational narrative modeling; happily, language data - including stories - are increasingly available in electronic form. Unhappily, the process of automatically separating stories from other forms of written discourse is not straightforward, and has resulted in a data collection bottleneck. Therefore researchers have sought to develop reliable, robust automatic algorithms for identifying story text mixed with other non-story text. In this paper we report on the reimplementation and experimental comparison of the two approaches to this task: Gordon\u27s unigram classifier, and Corman\u27s semantic triplet classifier. We cross-analyze their performance on both Gordon\u27s and Corman\u27s corpora, and discuss similarities, differences, and gaps in the performance of these classifiers, and point the way forward to improving their approaches

    CORLEONE - Core Linguistic Entity Online Extraction

    This report presents CORLEONE (Core Linguistic Entity Online Extraction) - a pool of loosely coupled general-purpose basic lightweight linguistic processing resources, which can be independently used to identify core linguistic entities and their features in free texts. Currently, CORLEONE consists of five processing resources: (a) a basic tokenizer, (b) a tokenizer which performs fine-grained token classification, (c) a component for performing morphological analysis, and (d) a memory-efficient database-like dictionary look-up component, and (e) sentence splitter. Linguistic resources for several languages are provided. Additionally, CORLEONE includes a comprehensive library of string distance metrics relevant for the task of name variant matching. CORLEONE has been developed in the Java programming language and heavily deploys state-of-the-art finite-state techniques. Noteworthy, CORLEONE components are used as basic linguistic processing resources in ExPRESS, a pattern matching engine based on regular expressions over feature structures and in the real-time news event extraction system, which were developed by the Web Mining and Intelligence Group of the Support to External Security Unit of IPSC.     Design of an Advanced Platform for Citizen Participation Committed to Ensuring Freedom of Speech

    This paper presents a proposal for an advanced system of debate in an environment of digital democracy which overcomes the limitations of existing systems. We have been especially careful in applying security procedures in telematic systems, for they are to offer citizens the guarantees that society demands. New functional tools have been included to ensure user authentication and to permit anonymous participation where the system is unable to disclose or even to know the identity of system users. The platform prevents participation by non-entitled persons who do not belong to the authorized group from giving their opinion. Furthermore, this proposal allows for verifying the proper function of the system, free of tampering or fraud intended to alter the conclusions or outcomes of participation. All these tools guarantee important aspects of both a social and technical nature, most importantly: freedom of expression, equality and auditability
