    Proof Complexity Meets Algebra

    We analyse how the standard reductions between constraint satisfaction problems affect their proof complexity. We show that, for the most studied propositional and semi-algebraic proof systems, the classical constructions of pp-interpretability, homomorphic equivalence and addition of constants to a core preserve the proof complexity of the CSP. As a result, for those proof systems, the classes of constraint languages for which small unsatisfiability certificates exist can be characterised algebraically. We illustrate our results by a gap theorem saying that a constraint language either has resolution refutations of bounded width, or does not have bounded-depth Frege refutations of subexponential size. The former holds exactly for the widely studied class of constraint languages of bounded width. This class is also known to coincide with the class of languages with Sums-of-Squares refutations of sublinear degree, a fact for which we provide an alternative proof. We hence ask for the existence of a natural proof system with good behaviour with respect to reductions and simultaneously small size refutations beyond bounded width. We give an example of such a proof system by showing that bounded-degree Lovasz-Schrijver satisfies both requirements

    Relational Width of First-Order Expansions of Homogeneous Graphs with Bounded Strict Width

    Solving the algebraic dichotomy conjecture for constraint satisfaction problems over structures first-order definable in countably infinite finitely bounded homogeneous structures requires understanding the applicability of local-consistency methods in this setting. We study the amount of consistency (measured by relational width) needed to solve CSP(?) for first-order expansions ? of countably infinite homogeneous graphs ? := (A; E), which happen all to be finitely bounded. We study our problem for structures ? that additionally have bounded strict width, i.e., for which establishing local consistency of an instance of CSP(?) not only decides if there is a solution but also ensures that every solution may be obtained from a locally consistent instance by greedily assigning values to variables, without backtracking. Our main result is that the structures ? under consideration have relational width exactly (2, ?_?) where ?_? is the maximal size of a forbidden subgraph of ?, but not smaller than 3. It beats the upper bound: (2 m, 3 m) where m = max(arity(?)+1, ?, 3) and arity(?) is the largest arity of a relation in ?, which follows from a sufficient condition implying bounded relational width given in [Manuel Bodirsky and Antoine Mottet, 2018]. Since ?_? may be arbitrarily large, our result contrasts the collapse of the relational bounded width hierarchy for finite structures ?, whose relational width, if finite, is always at most (2,3)

    Semantic Width and the Fixed-Parameter Tractability of Constraint Satisfaction Problems

    Constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs) are an important formal framework for the uniform treatment of various prominent AI tasks, e.g., coloring or scheduling problems. Solving CSPs is, in general, known to be NP-complete and fixed-parameter intractable when parameterized by their constraint scopes. We give a characterization of those classes of CSPs for which the problem becomes fixed-parameter tractable. Our characterization significantly increases the utility of the CSP framework by making it possible to decide the fixed-parameter tractability of problems via their CSP formulations. We further extend our characterization to the evaluation of unions of conjunctive queries, a fundamental problem in databases. Furthermore, we provide some new insight on the frontier of PTIME solvability of CSPs. In particular, we observe that bounded fractional hypertree width is more general than bounded hypertree width only for classes that exhibit a certain type of exponential growth.     The power of Sherali-Adams relaxations for general-valued CSPs

    We give a precise algebraic characterisation of the power of Sherali-Adams relaxations for solvability of valued constraint satisfaction problems to optimality. The condition is that of bounded width which has already been shown to capture the power of local consistency methods for decision CSPs and the power of semidefinite programming for robust approximation of CSPs. Our characterisation has several algorithmic and complexity consequences. On the algorithmic side, we show that several novel and many known valued constraint languages are tractable via the third level of the Sherali-Adams relaxation. For the known languages, this is a significantly simpler algorithm than the previously obtained ones. On the complexity side, we obtain a dichotomy theorem for valued constraint languages that can express an injective unary function. This implies a simple proof of the dichotomy theorem for conservative valued constraint languages established by Kolmogorov and Zivny [JACM'13], and also a dichotomy theorem for the exact solvability of Minimum-Solution problems. These are generalisations of Minimum-Ones problems to arbitrary finite domains. Our result improves on several previous classifications by Khanna et al. [SICOMP'00], Jonsson et al.     Pure Nash Equilibria: Hard and Easy Games

    We investigate complexity issues related to pure Nash equilibria of strategic games. We show that, even in very restrictive settings, determining whether a game has a pure Nash Equilibrium is NP-hard, while deciding whether a game has a strong Nash equilibrium is SigmaP2-complete. We then study practically relevant restrictions that lower the complexity. In particular, we are interested in quantitative and qualitative restrictions of the way each players payoff depends on moves of other players. We say that a game has small neighborhood if the utility function for each player depends only on (the actions of) a logarithmically small number of other players. The dependency structure of a game G can be expressed by a graph DG(G) or by a hypergraph H(G). By relating Nash equilibrium problems to constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs), we show that if G has small neighborhood and if H(G) has bounded hypertree width (or if DG(G) has bounded treewidth), then finding pure Nash and Pareto equilibria is feasible in polynomial time. If the game is graphical, then these problems are LOGCFL-complete and thus in the class NC2 of highly parallelizable problems

    Tree Projections and Constraint Optimization Problems: Fixed-Parameter Tractability and Parallel Algorithms

    Tree projections provide a unifying framework to deal with most structural decomposition methods of constraint satisfaction problems (CSPs). Within this framework, a CSP instance is decomposed into a number of sub-problems, called views, whose solutions are either already available or can be computed efficiently. The goal is to arrange portions of these views in a tree-like structure, called tree projection, which determines an efficiently solvable CSP instance equivalent to the original one. Deciding whether a tree projection exists is NP-hard. Solution methods have therefore been proposed in the literature that do not require a tree projection to be given, and that either correctly decide whether the given CSP instance is satisfiable, or return that a tree projection actually does not exist. These approaches had not been generalized so far on CSP extensions for optimization problems, where the goal is to compute a solution of maximum value/minimum cost. The paper fills the gap, by exhibiting a fixed-parameter polynomial-time algorithm that either disproves the existence of tree projections or computes an optimal solution, with the parameter being the size of the expression of the objective function to be optimized over all possible solutions (and not the size of the whole constraint formula, used in related works). Tractability results are also established for the problem of returning the best K solutions. Finally, parallel algorithms for such optimization problems are proposed and analyzed. Given that the classes of acyclic hypergraphs, hypergraphs of bounded treewidth, and hypergraphs of bounded generalized hypertree width are all covered as special cases of the tree projection framework, the results in this paper directly apply to these classes. These classes are extensively considered in the CSP setting, as well as in conjunctive database query evaluation and optimization

    Component twin-width as a parameter for BINARY-CSP and its semiring generalizations

    We investigate the fine-grained and the parameterized complexity of several generalizations of binary constraint satisfaction problems (BINARY-CSPs), that subsume variants of graph colouring problems. Our starting point is the observation that several algorithmic approaches that resulted in complexity upper bounds for these problems, share a common structure. We thus explore an algebraic approach relying on semirings that unifies different generalizations of BINARY-CSPs (such as the counting, the list, and the weighted versions), and that facilitates a general algorithmic approach to efficiently solving them. The latter is inspired by the (component) twin-width parameter introduced by Bonnet et al., which we generalize via edge-labelled graphs in order to formulate it to arbitrary binary constraints. We consider input instances with bounded component twin-width, as well as constraint templates of bounded component twin-width, and obtain an FPT algorithm as well as an improved, exponential-time algorithm, for broad classes of binary constraints. We illustrate the advantages of this framework by instantiating our general algorithmic approach on several classes of problems (e.g., the H-coloring problem and its variants), and showing that it improves the best complexity upper bounds in the literature for several well-known problems
