    Resilient Wireless Sensor Networks Using Topology Control: A Review

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) may be deployed in failure-prone environments, and WSNs nodes easily fail due to unreliable wireless connections, malicious attacks and resource-constrained features. Nevertheless, if WSNs can tolerate at most losing k − 1 nodes while the rest of nodes remain connected, the network is called k − connected. k is one of the most important indicators for WSNs’ self-healing capability. Following a WSN design flow, this paper surveys resilience issues from the topology control and multi-path routing point of view. This paper provides a discussion on transmission and failure models, which have an important impact on research results. Afterwards, this paper reviews theoretical results and representative topology control approaches to guarantee WSNs to be k − connected at three different network deployment stages: pre-deployment, post-deployment and re-deployment. Multi-path routing protocols are discussed, and many NP-complete or NP-hard problems regarding topology control are identified. The challenging open issues are discussed at the end. This paper can serve as a guideline to design resilient WSNs

    A Framework to Quantify Network Resilience and Survivability

    The significance of resilient communication networks in the modern society is well established. Resilience and survivability mechanisms in current networks are limited and domain specific. Subsequently, the evaluation methods are either qualitative assessments or context-specific metrics. There is a need for rigorous quantitative evaluation of network resilience. We propose a service oriented framework to characterize resilience of networks to a number of faults and challenges at any abstraction level. This dissertation presents methods to quantify the operational state and the expected service of the network using functional metrics. We formalize resilience as transitions of the network state in a two-dimensional state space quantifying network characteristics, from which network service performance parameters can be derived. One dimension represents the network as normally operating, partially degraded, or severely degraded. The other dimension represents network service as acceptable, impaired, or unacceptable. Our goal is to initially understand how to characterize network resilience, and ultimately how to guide network design and engineering toward increased resilience. We apply the proposed framework to evaluate the resilience of the various topologies and routing protocols. Furthermore, we present several mechanisms to improve the resilience of the networks to various challenges

    Modelling and performance analysis of mobile ad hoc networks

    PhD ThesisMobile Ad hoc Networks (MANETs) are becoming very attractive and useful in many kinds of communication and networking applications. This is due to their efficiency, relatively low cost, and flexibility provided by their dynamic infrastructure. Performance evaluation of mobile ad hoc networks is needed to compare various architectures of the network for their performance, study the effect of varying certain network parameters and study the interaction between various parameters that characterise the network. It can help in the design and implementation of MANETs. It is to be noted that most of the research that studies the performance of MANETs were evaluated using discrete event simulation (DES) utilising a broad band of network simulators. The principle drawback of DES models is the time and resources needed to run such models for large realistic systems, especially when results with a high accuracy are desired. In addition, studying typical problems such as the deadlock and concurrency in MANETs using DES is hard because network simulators implement the network at a low abstraction level and cannot support specifications at higher levels. Due to the advantage of quick construction and numerical analysis, analytical modelling techniques, such as stochastic Petri nets and process algebra, have been used for performance analysis of communication systems. In addition, analytical modelling is a less costly and more efficient method. It generally provides the best insight into the effects of various parameters and their interactions. Hence, analytical modelling is the method of choice for a fast and cost effective evaluation of mobile ad hoc networks. To the best of our knowledge, there is no analytical study that analyses the performance of multi-hop ad hoc networks, where mobile nodes move according to a random mobility model, in terms of the end-to-end delay and throughput. This work ii presents a novel analytical framework developed using stochastic reward nets and mathematical modelling techniques for modelling and analysis of multi-hop ad hoc networks, based on the IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol, where mobile nodes move according to the random waypoint mobility model. The proposed framework is used to analysis the performance of multi-hop ad hoc networks as a function of network parameters such as the transmission range, carrier sensing range, interference range, number of nodes, network area size, packet size, and packet generation rate. The proposed framework is organized into several models to break up the complexity of modelling the complete network and make it easier to analyse each model as required. This is based on the idea of decomposition and fixed point iteration of stochastic reward nets. The proposed framework consists of a mathematical model and four stochastic reward nets models; the path analysis model, data link layer model, network layer model and transport layer model. These models are arranged in a way similar to the layers of the OSI protocol stack model. The mathematical model is used to compute the expected number of hops between any source-destination pair; and the average number of carrier sensing, hidden, and interfering nodes. The path analysis model analyses the dynamic of paths in the network due to the node mobility in terms of the path connection availability and rate of failure and repair. The data link layer model describes the behaviour of the IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol. The actions in the network layer are modelled by the network layer model. The transport layer model represents the behaviour of the transport layer protocols. The proposed models are validated using extensive simulations

    Optimization of Handover, Survivability, Multi-Connectivity and Secure Slicing in 5G Cellular Networks using Matrix Exponential Models and Machine Learning

University of Missouri--Kansas City, 2022This works proposes optimization of cellular handovers, cellular network survivability modeling, multi-connectivity and secure network slicing using matrix exponentials and machine learning techniques. We propose matrix exponential (ME) modeling of handover arrivals with the potential to much more accurately characterize arrivals and prioritize resource allocation for handovers, especially handovers for emergency or public safety needs. With the use of a ‘B’ matrix for representing a handover arrival, we have a rich set of dimensions to model system handover behavior. We can study multiple parameters and the interactions between system events along with the user mobility, which would trigger a handoff in any given scenario. Additionally, unlike any traditional handover improvement scheme, we develop a ‘Deep-Mobility’ model by implementing a deep learning neural network (DLNN) to manage network mobility, utilizing in-network deep learning and prediction. We use the radio and the network key performance indicators (KPIs) to train our model to analyze network traffic and handover requirements. Cellular network design must incorporate disaster response, recovery and repair scenarios. Requirements for high reliability and low latency often fail to incorporate network survivability for mission critical and emergency services. Our Matrix Exponential (ME) model shows how survivable networks can be designed based on controlling numbers of crews, times taken for individual repair stages, and the balance between fast and slow repairs. Transient and the steady state representations of system repair models, namely, fast and slow repairs for networks consisting of multiple repair crews have been analyzed. Failures are exponentially modeled as per common practice, but ME distributions describe the more complex recovery processes. In some mission critical communications, the availability requirements may exceed five or even six nines (99.9999%). To meet such a critical requirement and minimize the impact of mobility during handover, a Fade Duration Outage Probability (FDOP) based multiple radio link connectivity handover method has been proposed. By applying such a method, a high degree of availability can be achieved by utilizing two or more uncorrelated links based on minimum FDOP values. Packet duplication (PD) via multi-connectivity is a method of compensating for lost packets on a wireless channel. Utilizing two or more uncorrelated links, a high degree of availability can be attained with this strategy. However, complete packet duplication is inefficient and frequently unnecessary. We provide a novel adaptive fractional packet duplication (A-FPD) mechanism for enabling and disabling packet duplication based on a variety of parameters. We have developed a ‘DeepSlice’ model by implementing Deep Learning (DL) Neural Network to manage network load efficiency and network availability, utilizing in-network deep learning and prediction. Our Neural Network based ‘Secure5G’ Network Slicing model will proactively detect and eliminate threats based on incoming connections before they infest the 5G core network elements.     End-to-End Resilience Mechanisms for Network Transport Protocols

    The universal reliance on and hence the need for resilience in network communications has been well established. Current transport protocols are designed to provide fixed mechanisms for error remediation (if any), using techniques such as ARQ, and offer little or no adaptability to underlying network conditions, or to different sets of application requirements. The ubiquitous TCP transport protocol makes too many assumptions about underlying layers to provide resilient end-to-end service in all network scenarios, especially those which include significant heterogeneity. Additionally the properties of reliability, performability, availability, dependability, and survivability are not explicitly addressed in the design, so there is no support for resilience. This dissertation presents considerations which must be taken in designing new resilience mechanisms for future transport protocols to meet service requirements in the face of various attacks and challenges.
