    Towards OpenMath Content Dictionaries as Linked Data

    "The term 'Linked Data' refers to a set of best practices for publishing and connecting structured data on the web". Linked Data make the Semantic Web work practically, which means that information can be retrieved without complicated lookup mechanisms, that a lightweight semantics enables scalable reasoning, and that the decentral nature of the Web is respected. OpenMath Content Dictionaries (CDs) have the same characteristics - in principle, but not yet in practice. The Linking Open Data movement has made a considerable practical impact: Governments, broadcasting stations, scientific publishers, and many more actors are already contributing to the "Web of Data". Queries can be answered in a distributed way, and services aggregating data from different sources are replacing hard-coded mashups. However, these services are currently entirely lacking mathematical functionality. I will discuss real-world scenarios, where today's RDF-based Linked Data do not quite get their job done, but where an integration of OpenMath would help - were it not for certain conceptual and practical restrictions. I will point out conceptual shortcomings in the OpenMath 2 specification and common bad practices in publishing CDs and then propose concrete steps to overcome them and to contribute OpenMath CDs to the Web of Data.Comment: Presented at the OpenMath Workshop 2010, http://cicm2010.cnam.fr/om

    When Things Matter: A Data-Centric View of the Internet of Things

    With the recent advances in radio-frequency identification (RFID), low-cost wireless sensor devices, and Web technologies, the Internet of Things (IoT) approach has gained momentum in connecting everyday objects to the Internet and facilitating machine-to-human and machine-to-machine communication with the physical world. While IoT offers the capability to connect and integrate both digital and physical entities, enabling a whole new class of applications and services, several significant challenges need to be addressed before these applications and services can be fully realized. A fundamental challenge centers around managing IoT data, typically produced in dynamic and volatile environments, which is not only extremely large in scale and volume, but also noisy, and continuous. This article surveys the main techniques and state-of-the-art research efforts in IoT from data-centric perspectives, including data stream processing, data storage models, complex event processing, and searching in IoT. Open research issues for IoT data management are also discussed

Sensor Observation Services (SOS) is a protocol that defines how to interchange geospatial data between a client and a SOS server by using a set of operations classified in three profiles: Core, Enhanced and Transactional.     Large-Scale Web Traffic Log Analyzer using Cloudera Impala on Hadoop Distributed File System

    AbstractResource planning and data analysis are important for network services in order to increase the service efficiency. Nowadays, Large websites or web servers have a large number of visitors, which mean a large web traffic log need to be stored in the plain text or the relational database. However plain text and relational database are not efficient to handle a large number of data. Moreover, the web traffic log analysis hardware or software that can handle such a big data is also expensive. This research paper proposes the design of a large-scale web traffic log analyzer using PHP language to show the visitors' traffic data analysis in the form of charts. The Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) is used in conjunction with other related techniques to gather and store visitors' traffic log. Cloudera Impala is used to query web traffic log stored in HDFS while Apache Thrift is an intermediary connecting Cloudera Impala to PHP web. Upon testing our large-scale web traffic log analyzer on HDFS Cluster of 8 nodes with 50 gigabytes of traffic log, our system can query and analysis web traffic log then display the result in about 4 second

    Embedded gateway services for Internet of Things applications in ubiquitous healthcare

    The continuous advancement in computer and communication technologies has made personalized healthcare monitoring a rapidly growing area of interest. New features and services are envisaged, raising users' expectations in healthcare services. The emergence of Internet of Things brings people closer to connect the physical world to the Internet. In this paper, we present embedded services that are part of a ubiquitous healthcare system that allows automated and intelligent monitoring. The system uses IP connectivity and the Internet for end-to-end communication, from each 6LoWPAN sensor nodes to the web user interface on the Internet. The proposed algorithm in the Gateway performs multithreaded processing on the gathered medical signals for conversion to real data, feature extraction and wireless display. The user interface at the server allows users to access and view the medical data from mobile and portable devices. The ubiquitous system is exploring possibilities in connecting Internet with things and people for health services

    A Transaction Model for Executions of Compositions of Internet of Things Services

    AbstractInternet of Things (IoT) is about making “things” smart in some functionality, and connecting and enabling them to perform complex tasks by themselves. The functionality can be encapsulated as services and the task executed by composing the services. Two noteworthy functionalities of IoT services are monitoring and actuation. Monitoring implies continuous executions, and actuation is by triggering. Continuous executions typically involve stream processing. Stream input data are accumulated into batches and each batch is subjected to a sequence of computations, structured as a dataflow graph. The composition may be processing several batches simultaneously. Additionally, some non-stream OLTP transactions may also be executing concurrently. Thus, several composite transactions may be executing concurrently. This is in contrast to a typical Web services composition, where just one composite transaction is executed on each invocation. Therefore, defining transactional properties for executions of IoT service compositions is much more complex than for those of conventional Web service compositions. In this paper, we propose a transaction model and a correctness criterion for executions of IoT service compositions. Our proposal defines relaxed atomicity and isolation properties for transactions in a flexible manner and can be adapted for a variety of IoT applications
