The Combination of Paradoxical, Uncertain, and Imprecise Sources of Information based on DSmT and Neutro-Fuzzy Inference
The management and combination of uncertain, imprecise, fuzzy and even
paradoxical or high conflicting sources of information has always been, and
still remains today, of primal importance for the development of reliable
modern information systems involving artificial reasoning. In this chapter, we
present a survey of our recent theory of plausible and paradoxical reasoning,
known as Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) in the literature, developed for
dealing with imprecise, uncertain and paradoxical sources of information. We
focus our presentation here rather on the foundations of DSmT, and on the two
important new rules of combination, than on browsing specific applications of
DSmT available in literature. Several simple examples are given throughout the
presentation to show the efficiency and the generality of this new approach.
The last part of this chapter concerns the presentation of the neutrosophic
logic, the neutro-fuzzy inference and its connection with DSmT. Fuzzy logic and
neutrosophic logic are useful tools in decision making after fusioning the
information using the DSm hybrid rule of combination of masses.Comment: 20 page

ON THE USE OF THE DEMPSTER SHAFER MODEL IN INFORMATION INDEXING AND RETRIEVAL APPLICATIONS
The Dempster Shafer theory of evidence concerns the elicitation and manipulation
of degrees of belief rendered by multiple sources of evidence to a common
set of propositions. Information indexing and retrieval applications use a variety
of quantitative means - both probabilistic and quasi-probabilistic - to represent
and manipulate relevance numbers and index vectors. Recently, several
proposals were made to use the Dempster Shafes model as a relevance calculus
in such applications. The paper provides a critical review of these proposals,
pointing at several theoretical caveats and suggesting ways to resolve them.
The methodology is based on expounding a canonical indexing model whose
relevance measures and combination mechanisms are shown to be isomorphic
to Shafer's belief functions and to Dempster's rule, respectively. Hence, the
paper has two objectives: (i) to describe and resolve some caveats in the way
the Dempster Shafer theory is applied to information indexing and retrieval,
and (ii) to provide an intuitive interpretation of the Dempster Shafer theory, as
it unfolds in the simple context of a canonical indexing model.Information Systems Working Papers Serie
Liberty, Efficiency, and Law
In today’s society there is an increasing demand for renewable energy sources such as sun and wind power. These sources are intermittent, and energy storage is therefore needed to ensure a constant power supply. This report compares pumped hydro energy storage (PHES), compressed air energy storage (CAES), flywheels, batteries, super magnetic energy storage (SMES) and hydrogen energy storage. The opportunities for further development are limited for PHES and CAES in comparison with the other technologies. Lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen energy storage are considered to have the most potential in the future. This is based on the high energy density and the high demand from other industries, the automotive industry in particular. The most limiting factor for both of these technologies is the high cost. Currently there is no method that alone can handle all types of energy storage that is needed, but lithium-ion batteries and hydrogen energy storage will play a key role in the future energy storage.
A Default-Logic Paradigm for Legal Reasoning and Factfinding
Unlike research in linguistics and artificial intelligence, legal research has not used advances in logical theory very effectively. This article uses default logic to develop a paradigm for analyzing all aspects of legal reasoning, including factfinding. The article provides a formal model that integrates legal rules and policies with the evaluation of both expert and non-expert evidence – whether the reasoning occurs in courts or administrative agencies, and whether in domestic, foreign, or international legal systems. This paradigm can standardize the representation of legal reasoning, guide empirical research into the dynamics of such reasoning, and put the representations and research results to immediate use through artificial intelligence software. This new model therefore has the potential to transform legal practice and legal education, as well as legal theory

Advances and Applications of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT), Vol. 1
The Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) of plausible and paradoxical reasoning is a natural extension of the classical Dempster-Shafer Theory (DST) but includes fundamental differences with the DST. DSmT allows to formally combine any types of independent sources of information represented in term of belief functions, but is mainly focused on the fusion of uncertain, highly conflicting and imprecise quantitative or qualitative sources of evidence. DSmT is able to solve complex, static or dynamic fusion problems beyond the limits of the DST framework, especially when conflicts between sources become large and when the refinement of the frame of the problem under consideration becomes inaccessible because of vague, relative and imprecise nature of elements of it. DSmT is used in cybernetics, robotics, medicine, military, and other engineering applications where the fusion of sensors\u27 information is required
Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion
This book is devoted to an emerging branch of Information Fusion based on new approach for modelling the fusion problematic when the information provided by the sources is both uncertain and (highly) conflicting. This approach, known in literature as DSmT (standing for Dezert-Smarandache Theory), proposes new useful rules of combinations
Advances and Applications of Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) for Information Fusion (Collected works), Vol. 2
This second volume dedicated to Dezert-Smarandache Theory (DSmT) in Information Fusion brings in new fusion quantitative rules (such as the PCR1-6, where PCR5 for two sources does the most mathematically exact redistribution of conflicting masses to the non-empty sets in the fusion literature), qualitative fusion rules, and the Belief Conditioning Rule (BCR) which is different from the classical conditioning rule used by the fusion community working with the Mathematical Theory of Evidence.
Other fusion rules are constructed based on T-norm and T-conorm (hence using fuzzy logic and fuzzy set in information fusion), or more general fusion rules based on N-norm and N-conorm (hence using neutrosophic logic and neutrosophic set in information fusion), and an attempt to unify the fusion rules and fusion theories.
The known fusion rules are extended from the power set to the hyper-power set and comparison between rules are made on many examples.
One defines the degree of intersection of two sets, degree of union of two sets, and degree of inclusion of two sets which all help in improving the all existing fusion rules as well as the credibility, plausibility, and communality functions.
