    Electromagnetic characterization of conformal antennas

The ultimate objective of this project is to develop a new technique which permits an accurate simulation of microstrip patch antennas or arrays with various feed, superstrate and/or substrate configurations residing in a recessed cavity whose aperture is planar, cylindrical or otherwise conformed to the substructure. The technique combines the finite element and boundary integral methods to formulate a system suitable for solution via the conjugate gradient method in conjunction with the fast Fourier transform. The final code is intended to compute both scattering and radiation patterns of the structure with an affordable memory demand. With upgraded capabilities, the four included papers examined the radar cross section (RCS), input impedance, gain, and resonant frequency of several rectangular configurations using different loading and substrate/superstrate configurations

Static and dynamic deformations can have a severe impact on the performance of conformal antennas on aircrafts and other vehicles. Therefore it is essential to study the different deformation and vibration mechanisms and their influence on the antenna's radiation pattern. This presentation gives an overview of different approaches concerning electromagnetic modelling of array antennas and investigations on antenna deformations presented in the scope of TG20

Conformal Antenna Array for Millimeter-Wave Communications: Performance Evaluation

In this paper, we study the influence of the radius of a cylindrical supporting structure on radiation properties of a conformal millimeter-wave antenna array. Bent antenna array structures on cylindrical surfaces may have important applications in future mobile devices. Small radii may be needed if the antenna is printed on the edges of mobile devices and in items which human beings are wearing, such as wrist watches, bracelets and rings. The antenna under study consists of four linear series-fed arrays of four patch elements and is operating at 58.8 GHz with linear polarization. The antenna array is fabricated on polytetrafluoroethylene substrate with thickness of 0.127 mm due to its good plasticity properties and low losses. Results for both planar and conformal antenna arrays show rather good agreement between simulation and measurements. The results show that conformal antenna structures allow achieving large angular coverage and may allow beam-steering implementations if switches are used to select between different arrays around a cylindrical supporting structure.Comment: Keywords: conformal antenna, millimeter-wave communications, patch antenna array. 11 pages, 10 figures, 1 tabl

An efficient asymptotic extraction approach for the green's functions of conformal antennas in multilayered cylindrical media

    Get PDF
Asymptotic expressions are derived for the dyadic Green's functions of antennas radiating in the presence of a multilayered cylinder, where analytic representation of the asymptotic expansion coefficients eliminates the computational cost of numerical evaluation. As a result, the asymptotic extraction technique has been applied only once for a large summation order nn. In addition, the Hankel function singularity encountered for source and evaluation points at the same radius has been eliminated using analytical integration

3D conformal antennas for radar applications

Embedded below the radome of a missile, existing RF-seekers use a mechanical rotating antenna to steer the radiating beam in the direction of a target. Latest research is looking at replacing the mechanical antenna components of the RF seeker with a novel 3D conformal antenna array that can steer the beam electronically. 3D antennas may oer signicant advantages, such as faster beamsteering and better coverage but, at the same time, introduce new challenges resulting from a much more complex radiation pattern than that of 2D antennas. Thanks to the mechanical system removal, the new RF-seeker has a wider available space for the design of a new 3D conformal antenna. To take best benets of this space, dierent array shapes are studied, hence the impact of the position, orientation and conformation of the elements is assessed on the antenna performance in terms of directivity, ellipticity and polarisation. To facilitate this study of 3D conformal arrays, a Matlab program has been developed to compute the polarisation pattern of a given array in all directions. One of the task of the RF-seeker consists in estimating the position of a given target to correct the missile trajectory accordingly. Thus, the impact of the array shape on the error between the measured direction of arrival of the target echo and its true value is addressed. The Cramer-Rao lower bound is used to evaluate the theoretical minimum error. The model assumes that each element receives independently and allows therefore to analyse the potential of active 3D conformal arrays. Finally, the phase monopulse estimator is studied for 3D conformal arrays whose quadrants do not have the same characteristics. A new estimator more adapted to non-identical quadrants is also proposed

A comprehensive study of the conformal microstrip printed antenna is presented. The main advantages and drawbacks of a microstrip conformal antenna are discussed. The paper discusses both conformal microstrip arrays. The effect of curvature on the conformal microstrip antenna patch on conical and spherical surfaces is studied. New flexible antenna designs are given for different frequencies . Finally, simulation studies are carried out to study the effect of the curvature on the input impedance, return loss, voltage standing wave ratio, and resonance frequency

A Universal Framework for Holographic MIMO Sensing

This paper addresses the sensing space identification of arbitrarily shaped continuous antennas. In the context of holographic multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO), a.k.a. large intelligent surfaces, these antennas offer benefits such as super-directivity and near-field operability. The sensing space reveals two key aspects: (a) its dimension specifies the maximally achievable spatial degrees of freedom (DoFs), and (b) the finite basis spanning this space accurately describes the sampled field. Earlier studies focus on specific geometries, bringing forth the need for extendable analysis to real-world conformal antennas. Thus, we introduce a universal framework to determine the antenna sensing space, regardless of its shape. The findings underscore both spatial and spectral concentration of sampled fields to define a generic eigenvalue problem of Slepian concentration. Results show that this approach precisely estimates the DoFs of well-known geometries, and verify its flexible extension to conformal antennas
