Controlling cooperation and recovery in nested transactions
Recovery is a hard problem in environments where transactions perform work in a cooperative style (e.g., design environments). We propose concepts to control cooperation and recovery within nested transaction hierarchies. By allowing different nodes to run different protocols, we can build so-called recovery spheres with well-defined properties. We characterize those properties and illustrate them by examples from design environments.<br/
A Flexible Framework For Implementing Multi-Nested Software Transaction Memory
Programming with locks is very difficult in multi-threaded programmes. Concurrency control of access to shared data limits scalable locking strategies otherwise provided for in software transaction memory. This work addresses the subject of creating dependable software in the face of eminent failures. In the past, programmers who used lock-based synchronization to implement concurrent access to shared data had to grapple with problems with conventional locking techniques such as deadlocks, convoying, and priority inversion. This paper proposes another advanced feature for Dynamic Software Transactional Memory intended to extend the concepts of transaction processing to provide a nesting mechanism and efficient lock-free synchronization, recoverability and restorability. In addition, the code for implementation has also been researched, coded, tested, and implemented to achieve the desired objectives
Processing and transaction concepts for cooperation of engineering workstations and a database server
A DBMS kernel architecture is proposed for improved DB support of engineering applications running on a cluster of workstations. Using such an approach, part of the DBMS code - an application-specific layer - is allocated close to the corresponding application on a workstation while the kernel code is executed on a central server. Emperical performance results from DB-based engineering applications are reported to justify the chosen DBMS architecture. The paper focuses on design issues of the application layer including server coupling, processing model and application interface. Moreover, a transaction model for long-term database work in a coupled workstation-server environment is investigated in detail
Design and implementation of a transaction manager for a relational database
1vf ulti-user database management systems are in great demand because of the information
requirements of our modern industrial society. A clear requirement is that
database resources be shared by many users at the same time. Transaction management
aims to manage concurrent database access by multiple users while preserving
the consistency of the database.
In this thesis a single-user relational database management system, REQUIEM,
is used as a vehicle to investigate improved methods for achieving this. A module,
called the REQUIEM Transaction Manager (RTM), is built on top of the original
REQUIEM to achieve a multi-user database management system.
The design work of the present thesis is founded upon various techniques for
transaction management proposed in published literature which are critically assessed
and a mechanism which combines appealing features from existing methodologies.
The problems of transaction management considered in this thesis are:
1. concurrency control,
2. granularity control,
3. deadlock control, and
4. recovery control.
The RTM is also compared with the transaction management facilities of conventional
commercial systems such as DB2, INGRES and ORACLE
Selective transparency in distributed transaction processing
PhD ThesisObject-oriented programming languages provide a powerful interface for
programmers to access the mechanisms necessary for reliable distributed
computing. Using inheritance and polymorphism provided by the object model, it
is possible to develop a hierarchy of classes to capture the semantics and
inter-relationships of various levels of functionality required for distributed
transaction processing. Using multiple inheritance, application developers can
selectively apply transaction properties to suit the requirements of the application
objects.
In addition to the specific problems of (distributed) transaction processing in an
environment of persistent objects, there is a need for a unified framework, or
architecture in which to place this system. To be truly effective, not only the
transaction manager, but the entire transaction support environment must be
described, designed and implemented in terms of objects.
This thesis presents an architecture for reliable distributed processing in which
the management of persistence, provision of transaction properties (e.g.,
concurrency control), and organisation of support services (e.g., RPC) are all
gathered into a unified design based on the object model.UK Science and Engineering Council:
