    Concurrent Speech Synthesis to Improve Document First Glance for the Blind

    International audienceSkimming and scanning are two well-known reading processes, which are combined to access the document content as quickly and efficiently as possible. While both are available in visual reading mode, it is rather difficult to use them in non visual environments because they mainly rely on typographical and layout properties. In this article, we introduce the concept of tag thunder as a way (1) to achieve the oral transposition of the web 2.0 concept of tag cloud and (2) to produce an innovative interactive stimulus to observe the emergence of self-adapted strategies for non-visual skimming of written texts. We first present our general and theoretical approach to the problem of both fast, global and non-visual access to web browsing; then we detail the progress of development and evaluation of the various components that make up our software architecture. We start from the hypothesis that the semantics of the visual architecture of web pages can be transposed into new sensory modalities thanks to three main steps (web page segmentation, keywords extraction and sound spatialization). We note the difficulty of simultaneously (1) evaluating a modular system as a whole at the end of the processing chain and (2) identifying at the level of each software brick the exact origin of its limits; despite this issue, the results of the first evaluation campaign seem promising

    MOOCEP: A method for Building Massive Online Courses for Elderly People: Using a MOOCEP creation

    Today, the population of elderly people has increased significantly in relation to the total world population. In recent years, this segment of population has shown a greater adherence and interest in technological advances, among them the Internet and its services; this, with the aim of develop different activities such as entertainment, obtain current information, learning different topics, among others. However, applications and websites do not take into account the specific requirements of elderly people. Hence, it is necessary to have methodologies, processes and tools that take into account appropriate forms of interaction specific to this vulnerable sector of the population. This article is an extension to the one presented at the INCISCOS 2017 conference, which proposed a methodology for the creation of massive online courses, called MOOCEP. In this work, it has been considered convenient to test the devices created with the use of MOOCEP, by presenting these resources to elderly people, in order to make a comparison of the before and after knowledge of the various topics presented in the learning platform

    Be Creative! Literature Review on People with Intellectual Disabilities’ Involvement in Media Research Studies

    Digital media have wide-ranging potential for people with and without disabilities. The increasing interest in media usage is reflected in numerous studies worldwide. People with intellectual disabilities are excluded from research due to a number of obstacles (e.g. cognitive and linguistic abilities) in this research field. Considering the lack of research about media usage and people with intellectual disabilities, this literature review analyses the following research questions: 1) Are people with intellectual disabilities involved in current research?, 2) What research methods are used to conduct research with people with intellectual disabilities?, and 3) Which topics are researched in current studies? To answer our research questions, we conducted a literature review with 38 studies included in our sample. We found that most studies use questionnaires or interviews to research the media usage of people with intellectual disabilities. In this paper, we discuss implications to involve people with disabilities in research.Digitale Medien haben ein weitreichendes Potenzial für Menschen mit und ohne Behinderungen. Das zunehmende Interesse an der Mediennutzung spiegelt sich in zahlreichen Studien weltweit wider. Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung sind aufgrund einer Reihe von Hindernissen (z. B. kognitive und sprachliche Fähigkeiten) von der Forschung in diesem Bereich ausgeschlossen. In Anbetracht des Mangels an Forschung über Mediennutzung und Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung werden in diese Literatur Review die folgenden Forschungsfragen untersucht: 1) Sind Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung in aktuelle Forschung einbezogen? 2) Welche Forschungsmethoden werden verwendet, um Forschung mit Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung durchzuführen? und 3) Welche Themen werden in aktuellen Studien erforscht? Zur Beantwortung der Forschungsfragen haben wurde eine Literatur Review durchgeführt und 38 Studien in die Stichprobe aufgenommen. Es stellte sich heraus, dass die meisten Studien Fragebögen oder Interviews verwenden, um die Mediennutzung von Menschen mit intellektueller Beeinträchtigung zu untersuchen.     A Systematic Mapping of Translation-Enabling Technologies for Sign Languages

    Sign languages (SL) are the first language for most deaf people. Consequently, bidirectional communication among deaf and non-deaf people has always been a challenging issue. Sign language usage has increased due to inclusion policies and general public agreement, which must then become evident in information technologies, in the many facets that comprise sign language understanding and its computational treatment. In this study, we conduct a thorough systematic mapping of translation-enabling technologies for sign languages. This mapping has considered the most recommended guidelines for systematic reviews, i.e., those pertaining software engineering, since there is a need to account for interdisciplinary areas of accessibility, human computer interaction, natural language processing, and education, all of them part of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery) computing classification system directly related to software engineering. An ongoing development of a software tool called SYMPLE (SYstematic Mapping and Parallel Loading Engine) facilitated the querying and construction of a base set of candidate studies. A great diversity of topics has been studied over the last 25 years or so, but this systematic mapping allows for comfortable visualization of predominant areas, venues, top authors, and different measures of concentration and dispersion. The systematic review clearly shows a large number of classifications and subclassifications interspersed over time. This is an area of study in which there is much interest, with a basically steady level of scientific publications over the last decade, concentrated mainly in the European continent.     Malay articulation system for early screening diagnostic using hidden markov model and genetic algorithm

    Speech recognition is an important technology and can be used as a great aid for individuals with sight or hearing disabilities today. There are extensive research interest and development in this area for over the past decades. However, the prospect in Malaysia regarding the usage and exposure is still immature even though there is demand from the medical and healthcare sector. The aim of this research is to assess the quality and the impact of using computerized method for early screening of speech articulation disorder among Malaysian such as the omission, substitution, addition and distortion in their speech. In this study, the statistical probabilistic approach using Hidden Markov Model (HMM) has been adopted with newly designed Malay corpus for articulation disorder case following the SAMPA and IPA guidelines. Improvement is made at the front-end processing for feature vector selection by applying the silence region calibration algorithm for start and end point detection. The classifier had also been modified significantly by incorporating Viterbi search with Genetic Algorithm (GA) to obtain high accuracy in recognition result and for lexical unit classification. The results were evaluated by following National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) benchmarking. Based on the test, it shows that the recognition accuracy has been improved by 30% to 40% using Genetic Algorithm technique compared with conventional technique. A new corpus had been built with verification and justification from the medical expert in this study. In conclusion, computerized method for early screening can ease human effort in tackling speech disorders and the proposed Genetic Algorithm technique has been proven to improve the recognition performance in terms of search and classification task

    Interactive maps for visually impaired people : design, usability and spatial cognition

    Connaître la géographie de son environnement urbain est un enjeu important pour les personnes déficientes visuelles. Des cartes tactiles en relief sont généralement utilisées mais elles présentent des limitations importantes (nombre limité d'informations, recours à une légende braille). Les nouvelles technologies permettent d'envisager des solutions innovantes. Nous avons conçu et développé une carte interactive accessible, en suivant un processus de conception participative. Cette carte est basée sur un dispositif multi-touch, une carte tactile en relief et une sortie sonore. Ce dispositif permet au sujet de recueillir des informations en double-cliquant sur certains objets de la carte. Nous avons démontré expérimentalement que ce prototype était plus efficace et plus satisfaisant pour des utilisateurs déficients visuels qu'une carte tactile simple. Nous avons également exploré et testé différents types d'interactions avancées accessibles pour explorer la carte. Cette thèse démontre l'importance des cartes tactiles interactives pour les déficients visuels et leur cognition spatiale.Knowing the geography of an urban environment is crucial for visually impaired people. Tactile relief maps are generally used, but they retain significant limitations (limited amount of information, use of braille legend, etc.). Recent technological progress allows the development of innovative solutions which overcome these limitations. In this thesis, we present the design of an accessible interactive map through a participatory design process. This map is composed by a multi-touch screen with tactile map overlay and speech output. It provides auditory information when tapping on map elements. We have demonstrated in an experiment that our prototype was more effective and satisfactory for visually impaired users than a simple raised-line map. We also explored and tested different types of advanced non-visual interaction for exploring the map. This thesis demonstrates the importance of interactive tactile maps for visually impaired people and their spatial cognition

    A Closer Look into Recent Video-based Learning Research: A Comprehensive Review of Video Characteristics, Tools, Technologies, and Learning Effectiveness

    People increasingly use videos on the Web as a source for learning. To support this way of learning, researchers and developers are continuously developing tools, proposing guidelines, analyzing data, and conducting experiments. However, it is still not clear what characteristics a video should have to be an effective learning medium. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of 257 articles on video-based learning for the period from 2016 to 2021. One of the aims of the review is to identify the video characteristics that have been explored by previous work. Based on our analysis, we suggest a taxonomy which organizes the video characteristics and contextual aspects into eight categories: (1) audio features, (2) visual features, (3) textual features, (4) instructor behavior, (5) learners activities, (6) interactive features (quizzes, etc.), (7) production style, and (8) instructional design. Also, we identify four representative research directions: (1) proposals of tools to support video-based learning, (2) studies with controlled experiments, (3) data analysis studies, and (4) proposals of design guidelines for learning videos. We find that the most explored characteristics are textual features followed by visual features, learner activities, and interactive features. Text of transcripts, video frames, and images (figures and illustrations) are most frequently used by tools that support learning through videos. The learner activity is heavily explored through log files in data analysis studies, and interactive features have been frequently scrutinized in controlled experiments. We complement our review by contrasting research findings that investigate the impact of video characteristics on the learning effectiveness, report on tasks and technologies used to develop tools that support learning, and summarize trends of design guidelines to produce learning video

    DOKY: A Multi-Modal User Interface for Non-Visual Presentation, Navigation and Manipulation of Structured Documents on Mobile and Wearable Devices

    There are a large number of highly structured documents available on the Internet. The logical document structure is very important for the reader in order to efficiently handling the document content. In graphical user interfaces, each logical structure element is presented by a specific visualisation, a graphical icon. This representation allows visual readers to recognise the structure at a glance. Another advantage is that it enables direct navigation and manipulation. Blind and visually impaired persons are unable to use graphical user interfaces and for the emerging category of mobile and wearable devices, where there are only small visual displays available or no visual display at all, a non-visual alternative is required too. A multi-modal user interface for non-visual presentation, navigation and manipulation of structured documents on mobile and wearable devices like smart phones, smart watches or smart tablets has been developed as a result of inductive research among 205 blind and visually impaired participants. It enables the user to get a fast overview over the document structure and to efficiently skim and scan over the document content by identifying the type, level, position, length, relationship and content text of each element as well as to focus, select, activate, move, remove and insert structure elements or text. These interactions are presented in a non-visual way using Earcons, Tactons and synthetic speech utterances, serving the auditory and tactile human sense. Navigation and manipulation is provided by using the multitouch, motion (linear acceleration and rotation) or speech recognition input modality. It is a complete solution for reading, creating and editing structured documents in a non-visual way. There is no special hardware required. The name DOKY is derived from a short form of the terms document, and accessibility. A flexible platform-independent and event-driven software architecture implementing the DOKY user interface as well as the automated structured observation research method employed for the investigation into the effectiveness of the proposed user interface has been presented. Because it is platform- and language-neutral, it can be used in a wide variety of platforms, environments and applications for mobile and wearable devices. Each component is defined by interfaces and abstract classes only, so that it can be easily changed or extended, and grouped in a semantically self-containing package. An investigation into the effectiveness of the proposed DOKY user interface has been carried out to see whether the proposed user interface design concepts and user interaction design concepts are effective means for non-visual presentation, navigation and manipulation of structured documents on mobile and wearable devices, by automated structured observations of 876 blind and visually impaired research subjects performing 19 exercises among a highly structured example document using the DOKY Structured Observation App on their own mobile or wearable device remotely over the Internet. The results showed that the proposed user interface design concepts for presentation and navigation and the user interaction design concepts for manipulation are effective and that their effectiveness depends on the input modality and hardware device employed as well as on the use of screen readers
