Exploring attributes, sequences, and time in Recommender Systems: From classical to Point-of-Interest recommendation

throughout the world, the amount of data stored on the Web has been
growing exponentially. In this new digital era, a large number of companies
have emerged with the purpose of ltering the information available on the
web and provide users with interesting items. The algorithms and models
used to recommend these items are called Recommender Systems. These
systems are applied to a large number of domains, from music, books, or
movies to dating or Point-of-Interest (POI), which is an increasingly popular
domain where users receive recommendations of di erent places when
they arrive to a city.
In this thesis, we focus on exploiting the use of contextual information, especially
temporal and sequential data, and apply it in novel ways in both
traditional and Point-of-Interest recommendation. We believe that this type
of information can be used not only for creating new recommendation models
but also for developing new metrics for analyzing the quality of these
recommendations. In one of our rst contributions we propose di erent
metrics, some of them derived from previously existing frameworks, using
this contextual information. Besides, we also propose an intuitive algorithm
that is able to provide recommendations to a target user by exploiting the
last common interactions with other similar users of the system.
At the same time, we conduct a comprehensive review of the algorithms
that have been proposed in the area of POI recommendation between 2011
and 2019, identifying the common characteristics and methodologies used.
Once this classi cation of the algorithms proposed to date is completed, we
design a mechanism to recommend complete routes (not only independent
POIs) to users, making use of reranking techniques. In addition, due to the
great di culty of making recommendations in the POI domain, we propose
the use of data aggregation techniques to use information from di erent
cities to generate POI recommendations in a given target city.
In the experimental work we present our approaches on di erent datasets
belonging to both classical and POI recommendation. The results obtained
in these experiments con rm the usefulness of our recommendation proposals,
in terms of ranking accuracy and other dimensions like novelty, diversity,
and coverage, and the appropriateness of our metrics for analyzing temporal
information and biases in the recommendations producedDesde la aparici on de Internet y la difusi on de las redes de comunicaciones
en todo el mundo, la cantidad de datos almacenados en la red ha crecido
exponencialmente. En esta nueva era digital, han surgido un gran n umero
de empresas con el objetivo de ltrar la informaci on disponible en la red
y ofrecer a los usuarios art culos interesantes. Los algoritmos y modelos
utilizados para recomendar estos art culos reciben el nombre de Sistemas de
Recomendaci on. Estos sistemas se aplican a un gran n umero de dominios,
desde m usica, libros o pel culas hasta las citas o los Puntos de Inter es (POIs,
en ingl es), un dominio cada vez m as popular en el que los usuarios reciben
recomendaciones de diferentes lugares cuando llegan a una ciudad.
En esta tesis, nos centramos en explotar el uso de la informaci on contextual,
especialmente los datos temporales y secuenciales, y aplicarla de forma novedosa
tanto en la recomendaci on cl asica como en la recomendaci on de POIs.
Creemos que este tipo de informaci on puede utilizarse no s olo para crear
nuevos modelos de recomendaci on, sino tambi en para desarrollar nuevas
m etricas para analizar la calidad de estas recomendaciones. En una de
nuestras primeras contribuciones proponemos diferentes m etricas, algunas
derivadas de formulaciones previamente existentes, utilizando esta informaci
on contextual. Adem as, proponemos un algoritmo intuitivo que es
capaz de proporcionar recomendaciones a un usuario objetivo explotando
las ultimas interacciones comunes con otros usuarios similares del sistema.
Al mismo tiempo, realizamos una revisi on exhaustiva de los algoritmos que
se han propuesto en el a mbito de la recomendaci o n de POIs entre 2011 y
2019, identi cando las caracter sticas comunes y las metodolog as utilizadas.
Una vez realizada esta clasi caci on de los algoritmos propuestos hasta la
fecha, dise~namos un mecanismo para recomendar rutas completas (no s olo
POIs independientes) a los usuarios, haciendo uso de t ecnicas de reranking.
Adem as, debido a la gran di cultad de realizar recomendaciones en el
ambito de los POIs, proponemos el uso de t ecnicas de agregaci on de datos
para utilizar la informaci on de diferentes ciudades y generar recomendaciones
de POIs en una determinada ciudad objetivo.
En el trabajo experimental presentamos nuestros m etodos en diferentes
conjuntos de datos tanto de recomendaci on cl asica como de POIs. Los
resultados obtenidos en estos experimentos con rman la utilidad de nuestras
propuestas de recomendaci on en t erminos de precisi on de ranking y de
otras dimensiones como la novedad, la diversidad y la cobertura, y c omo de
apropiadas son nuestras m etricas para analizar la informaci on temporal y
los sesgos en las recomendaciones producida
Usability analysis of contending electronic health record systems
In this paper, we report measured usability of two leading EHR systems during procurement. A total of 18 users participated in paired-usability testing of three scenarios: ordering and managing medications by an outpatient physician, medicine administration by an inpatient nurse and scheduling of appointments by nursing staff. Data for audio, screen capture, satisfaction rating, task success and errors made was collected during testing. We found a clear difference between the systems for percentage of successfully completed tasks, two different satisfaction measures and perceived learnability when looking at the results over all scenarios. We conclude that usability should be evaluated during procurement and the difference in usability between systems could be revealed even with fewer measures than were used in our study. © 2019 American Psychological Association Inc. Ecosystemic Evolution Feeded by Smart Systems
Information Society is advancing along a route of ecosystemic evolution. ICT and Internet advancements, together with the progression of the systemic approach for enhancement and application of Smart Systems, are grounding such an evolution. The needed approach is therefore expected to evolve by increasingly fitting into the basic requirements of a significant general enhancement of human and social well-being, within all spheres of life (public, private, professional). This implies enhancing and exploiting the net-living virtual space, to make it a virtuous beneficial integration of the real-life space. Meanwhile, contextual evolution of smart cities is aiming at strongly empowering that ecosystemic approach by enhancing and diffusing net-living benefits over our own lived territory, while also incisively targeting a new stable socio-economic local development, according to social, ecological, and economic sustainability requirements. This territorial focus matches with a new glocal vision, which enables a more effective diffusion of benefits in terms of well-being, thus moderating the current global vision primarily fed by a global-scale market development view. Basic technological advancements have thus to be pursued at the system-level. They include system architecting for virtualization of functions, data integration and sharing, flexible basic service composition, and end-service personalization viability, for the operation and interoperation of smart systems, supporting effective net-living advancements in all application fields. Increasing and basically mandatory importance must also be increasingly reserved for human–technical and social–technical factors, as well as to the associated need of empowering the cross-disciplinary approach for related research and innovation. The prospected eco-systemic impact also implies a social pro-active participation, as well as coping with possible negative effects of net-living in terms of social exclusion and isolation, which require incisive actions for a conformal socio-cultural development. In this concern, speed, continuity, and expected long-term duration of innovation processes, pushed by basic technological advancements, make ecosystemic requirements stricter. This evolution requires also a new approach, targeting development of the needed basic and vocational education for net-living, which is to be considered as an engine for the development of the related ‘new living know-how’, as well as of the conformal ‘new making know-how’
Shortest Route at Dynamic Location with Node Combination-Dijkstra Algorithm
Abstract— Online transportation has become a basic
requirement of the general public in support of all activities to go
to work, school or vacation to the sights. Public transportation
services compete to provide the best service so that consumers
feel comfortable using the services offered, so that all activities
are noticed, one of them is the search for the shortest route in
picking the buyer or delivering to the destination. Node
Combination method can minimize memory usage and this
methode is more optimal when compared to A* and Ant Colony
in the shortest route search like Dijkstra algorithm, but can’t
store the history node that has been passed. Therefore, using
node combination algorithm is very good in searching the
shortest distance is not the shortest route. This paper is
structured to modify the node combination algorithm to solve the
problem of finding the shortest route at the dynamic location
obtained from the transport fleet by displaying the nodes that
have the shortest distance and will be implemented in the
geographic information system in the form of map to facilitate
the use of the system.

Performance of management solutions and cooperation approaches for vehicular delay-tolerant networks
A wide range of daily-life applications supported by vehicular networks attracted the interest,
not only from the research community, but also from governments and the automotive
industry. For example, they can be used to enable services that assist drivers on the roads (e.g.,
road safety, traffic monitoring), to spread commercial and entertainment contents (e.g., publicity),
or to enable communications on remote or rural regions where it is not possible to have
a common network infrastructure. Nonetheless, the unique properties of vehicular networks
raise several challenges that greatly impact the deployment of these networks.
Most of the challenges faced by vehicular networks arise from the highly dynamic network
topology, which leads to short and sporadic contact opportunities, disruption, variable
node density, and intermittent connectivity. This situation makes data dissemination an interesting
research topic within the vehicular networking area, which is addressed by this study.
The work described along this thesis is motivated by the need to propose new solutions to deal
with data dissemination problems in vehicular networking focusing on vehicular delay-tolerant
networks (VDTNs).
To guarantee the success of data dissemination in vehicular networks scenarios it is important
to ensure that network nodes cooperate with each other. However, it is not possible
to ensure a fully cooperative scenario. This situation makes vehicular networks suitable to the
presence of selfish and misbehavior nodes, which may result in a significant decrease of the
overall network performance. Thus, cooperative nodes may suffer from the overwhelming load
of services from other nodes, which comprises their performance.
Trying to solve some of these problems, this thesis presents several proposals and studies
on the impact of cooperation, monitoring, and management strategies on the network performance
of the VDTN architecture. The main goal of these proposals is to enhance the network
performance. In particular, cooperation and management approaches are exploited to improve
and optimize the use of network resources. It is demonstrated the performance gains attainable
in a VDTN through both types of approaches, not only in terms of bundle delivery probability,
but also in terms of wasted resources.
The results and achievements observed on this research work are intended to contribute
to the advance of the state-of-the-art on methods and strategies for overcome the challenges
that arise from the unique characteristics and conceptual design of vehicular networks.O vasto número de aplicações e cenários suportados pelas redes veiculares faz com que
estas atraiam o interesse não só da comunidade científica, mas também dos governos e da indústria
automóvel. A título de exemplo, estas podem ser usadas para a implementação de serviços
e aplicações que podem ajudar os condutores dos veículos a tomar decisões nas estradas, para
a disseminação de conteúdos publicitários, ou ainda, para permitir que existam comunicações
em zonas rurais ou remotas onde não é possível ter uma infraestrutura de rede convencional.
Contudo, as propriedades únicas das redes veiculares fazem com que seja necessário ultrapassar
um conjunto de desafios que têm grande impacto na sua aplicabilidade.
A maioria dos desafios que as redes veiculares enfrentam advêm da grande mobilidade dos
veículos e da topologia de rede que está em constante mutação. Esta situação faz com que este
tipo de rede seja suscetível de disrupção, que as oportunidades de contacto sejam escassas e de
curta duração, e que a ligação seja intermitente. Fruto destas adversidades, a disseminação dos
dados torna-se um tópico de investigação bastante promissor na área das redes veiculares e por
esta mesma razão é abordada neste trabalho de investigação. O trabalho descrito nesta tese é
motivado pela necessidade de propor novas abordagens para lidar com os problemas inerentes
à disseminação dos dados em ambientes veiculares.
Para garantir o sucesso da disseminação dos dados em ambientes veiculares é importante
que este tipo de redes garanta a cooperação entre os nós da rede. Contudo, neste tipo de ambientes
não é possível garantir um cenário totalmente cooperativo. Este cenário faz com que
as redes veiculares sejam suscetíveis à presença de nós não cooperativos que comprometem
seriamente o desempenho global da rede. Por outro lado, os nós cooperativos podem ver o seu
desempenho comprometido por causa da sobrecarga de serviços que poderão suportar.
Para tentar resolver alguns destes problemas, esta tese apresenta várias propostas e estudos
sobre o impacto de estratégias de cooperação, monitorização e gestão de rede no desempenho
das redes veiculares com ligações intermitentes (Vehicular Delay-Tolerant Networks
- VDTNs). O objetivo das propostas apresentadas nesta tese é melhorar o desempenho global
da rede. Em particular, as estratégias de cooperação e gestão de rede são exploradas para
melhorar e optimizar o uso dos recursos da rede. Ficou demonstrado que o uso deste tipo de
estratégias e metodologias contribui para um aumento significativo do desempenho da rede,
não só em termos de agregados de pacotes (“bundles”) entregues, mas também na diminuição
do volume de recursos desperdiçados.
Os resultados observados neste trabalho procuram contribuir para o avanço do estado
da arte em métodos e estratégias que visam ultrapassar alguns dos desafios que advêm das
propriedades e desenho conceptual das redes veiculares
Metodología de implantación de modelos de gestión de la información dentro de los sistemas de planificación de recursos empresariales. Aplicación en la pequeña y mediana empresa
La Siguiente Generación de Sistemas de Fabricación (SGSF) trata de dar respuesta a los requerimientos de los nuevos modelos de empresas, en contextos de inteligencia, agilidad y adaptabilidad en un entono global y virtual. La Planificación de Recursos Empresariales (ERP) con soportes de gestión del producto (PDM) y el ciclo de vida del producto (PLM) proporciona soluciones de gestión empresarial sobre la base de un uso coherente de tecnologías de la información para la implantación en sistemas CIM (Computer-Integrated Manufacturing), con un alto grado de adaptabilidad a la estnictura organizativa deseada. En general, esta implementación se lleva desarrollando hace tiempo en grandes empresas, siendo menor (casi nula) su extensión a PYMEs.
La presente Tesis Doctoral, define y desarrolla una nueva metodología de implementación pan la generación automática de la información en los procesos de negocio que se verifican en empresas con requerimientos adaptados a las necesidades de la SGSF, dentro de los sistemas de gestión de los recursos empresariales (ERP), atendiendo a la influencia del factor humano. La validez del modelo teórico de la metodología mencionada se ha comprobado al implementarlo en una empresa del tipo PYME, del sector de Ingeniería.
Para el establecimiento del Estado del Arte de este tema se ha diseñado y aplicado una metodología específica basada en el ciclo de mejora continua de Shewhart/Deming, aplicando las herramientas de búsqueda y análisis bibliográfico disponibles en la red con acceso a las correspondientes bases de datos
Anytime-Anywhere: Personalised Time Management in Networking for e-Learning
Personalisation in the provision of higher education (HE) has gained traction driven by socio-economic, demographic, and employment changes in the student population. Concomitant with these changes is the evolving capability and ubiquity of mobile technologies. These developments have resulted in interest in e-learning to accommodate the diverse student population and leverage the power of mobile technologies. To address the changing educational demands ‘anytime-anywhere' personalised e-learning utilising mobile technologies is becoming ubiquitous in the domain of HE, and increasingly e-learning is embracing Web 2.0 technologies to provide networking functionality at both a pedagogic and personal level. Personalisation requires the creation of an individual's profile (termed a context), a context defining and describing a user's current state. This article considers personalised e-learning in a university domain with consideration of networking (in a collaborative and social networking sense). Following consideration of the factors driving the interest in and take-up of e-Learning (in a mobile context) Web 2.0 technologies will be considered. The nature of context and context and related research is considered followed by a brief overview of the proposed approach which is designed to enable effective personalisation with constraint satisfaction and predictable decision support. The article closes with final observations and conclusions
