    Path planning algorithms for autonomous navigation of a non-holonomic robot in unstructured environments

    openPath planning is a crucial aspect of autonomous robot navigation, enabling robots to efficiently and safely navigate through complex environments. This thesis focuses on autonomous navigation for robots in dynamic and uncertain environments. In particular, the project aims to analyze the localization and path planning problems. A fundamental review of the existing literature on path planning algorithms has been carried on. Various factors affecting path planning, such as sensor data fusion, map representation, and motion constraints, are also analyzed. Thanks to the collaboration with E80 Group S.p.A., the project has been developed using ROS (Robot Operating System) on a Clearpath Dingo-O, an indoor mobile robot. To address the challenges posed by unstructured and dynamic environments, ROS follows a combined approach of using a global planner and a local planner. The global planner generates a high-level path, considering the overall environment, while the local planner handles real-time adjustments to avoid moving obstacles and optimize the trajectory. This thesis describes the role of the global planner in a ROS-framework. Performance benchmarking of traditional algorithms like Dijkstra and A*, as well as other techniques, is fundamental in order to understand the limits of these methods. In the end, the Hybrid A* algorithm is introduced as a promising approach for addressing the issues of unstructured environments for autonomous navigation of a non-holonomic robot. The core concepts and implementation details of the algorithm are discussed, emphasizing its ability to efficiently explore continuous state spaces and generate drivable paths.The effectiveness of the proposed path planning algorithms is evaluated through extensive simulations and real-world experiments using the mobile platform.     As competições de robótica móvel desempenham papel preponderante na difusão da ciência e da engenharia ao público em geral. E também um espaço dedicado ao ensaio e comparação de diferentes estratégias e abordagens aos diversos desafios da robótica móvel. Uma das vertentes que tem reunido maior interesse nos promotores deste género de iniciativas e entre o público em geral são as competições de condução autónoma. Tipicamente as Competi¸c˜oes de Condução Autónoma (CCA) tentam reproduzir um ambiente semelhante a uma estrutura rodoviária tradicional, no qual sistemas autónomos deverão dar resposta a um conjunto variado de desafios que vão desde a deteção da faixa de rodagem `a interação com distintos elementos que compõem uma estrutura rodoviária típica, do planeamento trajetórias à localização. O objectivo desta dissertação de mestrado visa documentar o processo de desenho e concepção de uma plataforma robótica móvel do tipo 4-wheel skid-steer para realização de tarefas de condução autónoma em ambiente estruturado numa pista que pretende replicar uma via de circulação automóvel dotada de sinalética básica e alguns obstáculos. It is also a space dedicated to test and compare different strategies and approaches to several challenges of mobile robotics. One of the aspects that has attracted more the interest of promoters for this kind of initiatives and general public is the autonomous driving competitions. Typically, Autonomous Driving Competitions (CCAs) attempt to replicate an environment similar to a traditional road structure, in which autonomous systems should respond to a wide variety of challenges ranging from lane detection to interaction with distinct elements that exist in a typical road structure, from planning trajectories to location. The aim of this master’s thesis is to document the process of designing and endow a 4-wheel skid-steer mobile robotic platform to carry out autonomous driving tasks in a structured environment on a track that intends to replicate a motorized roadway including signs and obstacles. In parallel, the dissertation also intends to make a qualitative analysis between the simulation process and the transposition of the developed algorithm to a physical robotic platform, analysing the differences in performance and behavior

    Mestrado em Engenharia MecânicaEste trabalho enquadra-se no contexto da condução autónoma, e o objetivo principal consiste na deteção e realização de uma manobra de estacionamento paralelo por parte de um veículo não-holonómico à escala de 1:5, utilizando um ambiente de programação ROS. Numa primeira fase são detetados os possíveis lugares vagos com recurso a uma nuvem de pontos proveniente de uma câmara 3D (Kinect), analizando volumes ao lado do carro. Assim que é encontrado um lugar vazio, inicia-se o estudo de possíveis trajetórias de aproximação. Estas trajetórias são compostas e são geradas em modo offline. É escolhido o melhor caminho a seguir e, no final, envia-se uma mensagem de comando para o veículo executar a manobra. Os objetivos traçados foram alcançados com sucesso, uma vez que as manobras de estacionamento foram realizadas corretamente nas condições esperadas. Para trabalhos futuros, seria interessante migrar este algoritmo de procura para outros veículos e tipos de manobra.This work fits into the context of autonomous driving, and the main goal consists of the detection and execution of a parallel parking manoeuvre by a 1:5 scaled non-holonomic vehicle, using the ROS programming environment. In a first stage, the possible parking locations are detected by analysing a point cloud provided by a 3D camera (Kinect) and specifically by analysing volumes on the side of the car. Whenever an empty place is found, the study of possible paths of approach begins. These are composed trajectories, being generated offline. The path to follow is evaluated, and then the commands needed to the vehicle perform the selected path are sent. The outlined objectives were successfully achieved, since parking manoeuvres were performed correctly in the expected conditions. For future work, it would be interesting to migrate the search algorithm to other types of vehicles and manoeuvring

    A unified motion planning method for parking an autonomous vehicle in the presence of irregularly placed obstacles

    AbstractThis paper proposes a motion planner for autonomous parking. Compared to the prevailing and emerging studies that handle specific or regular parking scenarios only, our method describes various kinds of parking cases in a unified way regardless they are regular parking scenarios (e.g., parallel, perpendicular or echelon parking cases) or not. First, we formulate a time-optimal dynamic optimization problem with vehicle kinematics, collision-avoidance conditions and mechanical constraints strictly described. Thereafter, an interior-point simultaneous approach is introduced to solve that formulated dynamic optimization problem. Simulation results validate that our proposed motion planning method can tackle general parking scenarios. The tested parking scenarios in this paper can be regarded as benchmark cases to evaluate the efficiency of methods that may emerge in the future. Our established dynamic optimization problem is an open and unified framework, where other complicated user-specific constraints/optimization criteria can be handled without additional difficulty, provided that they are expressed through inequalities/polynomial explicitly. This proposed motion planner may be suitable for the next-generation intelligent parking-garage system

    An Efficient Spatial-Temporal Trajectory Planner for Autonomous Vehicles in Unstructured Environments

    As a core part of autonomous driving systems, motion planning has received extensive attention from academia and industry. However, real-time trajectory planning capable of spatial-temporal joint optimization is challenged by nonholonomic dynamics, particularly in the presence of unstructured environments and dynamic obstacles. To bridge the gap, we propose a real-time trajectory optimization method that can generate a high-quality whole-body trajectory under arbitrary environmental constraints. By leveraging the differential flatness property of car-like robots, we simplify the trajectory representation and analytically formulate the planning problem while maintaining the feasibility of the nonholonomic dynamics. Moreover, we achieve efficient obstacle avoidance with a safe driving corridor for unmodelled obstacles and signed distance approximations for dynamic moving objects. We present comprehensive benchmarks with State-of-the-Art methods, demonstrating the significance of the proposed method in terms of efficiency and trajectory quality. Real-world experiments verify the practicality of our algorithm. We will release our codes for the research communit

    Real-time trajectory generation for dynamic systems with nonholonomic constraints using Player/Stage and NTG.

    This thesis will present various methods of trajectory generation for various types of mobile robots. Then it will progress to evaluating Robot Operating Systems (ROS’s) that can be used to control and simulate mobile robots, and it will explain why Player/Stage was chosen as the ROS for this thesis. It will then discuss Nonlinear Trajectory Generation as the main method for producing a path for mobile robots with dynamic and kinematic constraints. Finally, it will combine Player, Stage, and NTG into a system that produces a trajectory in real-time for a mobile robot and simulates a differential drive robot being driven from the initial state to the goal state in the presence of obstacles. Experiments will include the following: Blobfinding for physical and simulated camera systems, position control of physical and simulated differential drive robots, wall following using simulated range sensors, trajectory generation for omnidirectional and differential drive robots, and a combination of blobfinding, position control, and trajectory generation. Each experiment was a success, to varying degrees. The culmination of the thesis will present a real-time trajectory generation and position control method for a differential drive robot in the presence of obstacles

    Clothoid-based Planning and Control in Intelligent Vehicles (Autonomous and Manual-Assisted Driving)

    [EN] Nowadays, there are many electronic products that incorporate elements and features coming from the research in the field of mobile robotics. For instance, the well-known vacuum cleaning robot Roomba by iRobot, which belongs to the field of service robotics, one of the most active within the sector. There are also numerous autonomous robotic systems in industrial warehouses and plants. It is the case of Autonomous Guided Vehicles (AGVs), which are able to drive completely autonomously in very structured environments. Apart from industry and consumer electronics, within the automotive field there are some devices that give intelligence to the vehicle, derived in most cases from advances in mobile robotics. In fact, more and more often vehicles incorporate Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), such as navigation control with automatic speed regulation, lane change and overtaking assistant, automatic parking or collision warning, among other features. However, despite all the advances there are some problems that remain unresolved and can be improved. Collisions and rollovers stand out among the most common accidents of vehicles with manual or autonomous driving. In fact, it is almost impossible to guarantee driving without accidents in unstructured environments where vehicles share the space with other moving agents, such as other vehicles and pedestrians. That is why searching for techniques to improve safety in intelligent vehicles, either autonomous or manual-assisted driving, is still a trending topic within the robotics community. This thesis focuses on the design of tools and techniques for planning and control of intelligent vehicles in order to improve safety and comfort. The dissertation is divided into two parts, the first one on autonomous driving and the second one on manual-assisted driving. The main link between them is the use of clothoids as mathematical formulation for both trajectory generation and collision detection. Among the problems solved the following stand out: obstacle avoidance, rollover avoidance and advanced driver assistance to avoid collisions with pedestrians.[ES] En la actualidad se comercializan infinidad de productos de electrónica de consumo que incorporan elementos y características procedentes de avances en el sector de la robótica móvil. Por ejemplo, el conocido robot aspirador Roomba de la empresa iRobot, el cual pertenece al campo de la robótica de servicio, uno de los más activos en el sector. También hay numerosos sistemas robóticos autónomos en almacenes y plantas industriales. Es el caso de los vehículos autoguiados (AGVs), capaces de conducir de forma totalmente autónoma en entornos muy estructurados. Además de en la industria y en electrónica de consumo, dentro del campo de la automoción también existen dispositivos que dotan de cierta inteligencia al vehículo, derivados la mayoría de las veces de avances en robótica móvil. De hecho, cada vez con mayor frecuencia los vehículos incorporan sistemas avanzados de asistencia al conductor (ADAS por sus siglas en inglés), tales como control de navegación con regulación automática de velocidad, asistente de cambio de carril y adelantamiento, aparcamiento automático o aviso de colisión, entre otras prestaciones. No obstante, pese a todos los avances siguen existiendo problemas sin resolver y que pueden mejorarse. La colisión y el vuelco destacan entre los accidentes más comunes en vehículos con conducción tanto manual como autónoma. De hecho, la dificultad de conducir en entornos desestructurados compartiendo el espacio con otros agentes móviles, tales como coches o personas, hace casi imposible garantizar la conducción sin accidentes. Es por ello que la búsqueda de técnicas para mejorar la seguridad en vehículos inteligentes, ya sean de conducción autónoma o manual asistida, es un tema que siempre está en auge en la comunidad robótica. La presente tesis se centra en el diseño de herramientas y técnicas de planificación y control de vehículos inteligentes, para la mejora de la seguridad y el confort. La disertación se ha dividido en dos partes, la primera sobre conducción autónoma y la segunda sobre conducción manual asistida. El principal nexo de unión es el uso de clotoides como elemento de generación de trayectorias y detección de colisiones. Entre los problemas que se resuelven destacan la evitación de obstáculos, la evitación de vuelcos y la asistencia avanzada al conductor para evitar colisiones con peatones.[CA] En l'actualitat es comercialitzen infinitat de productes d'electrònica de consum que incorporen elements i característiques procedents d'avanços en el sector de la robòtica mòbil. Per exemple, el conegut robot aspirador Roomba de l'empresa iRobot, el qual pertany al camp de la robòtica de servici, un dels més actius en el sector. També hi ha nombrosos sistemes robòtics autònoms en magatzems i plantes industrials. És el cas dels vehicles autoguiats (AGVs), els quals són capaços de conduir de forma totalment autònoma en entorns molt estructurats. A més de en la indústria i en l'electrònica de consum, dins el camp de l'automoció també existeixen dispositius que doten al vehicle de certa intel·ligència, la majoria de les vegades derivats d'avanços en robòtica mòbil. De fet, cada vegada amb més freqüència els vehicles incorporen sistemes avançats d'assistència al conductor (ADAS per les sigles en anglés), com ara control de navegació amb regulació automàtica de velocitat, assistent de canvi de carril i avançament, aparcament automàtic o avís de col·lisió, entre altres prestacions. No obstant això, malgrat tots els avanços segueixen existint problemes sense resoldre i que poden millorar-se. La col·lisió i la bolcada destaquen entre els accidents més comuns en vehicles amb conducció tant manual com autònoma. De fet, la dificultat de conduir en entorns desestructurats compartint l'espai amb altres agents mòbils, tals com cotxes o persones, fa quasi impossible garantitzar la conducció sense accidents. És per això que la recerca de tècniques per millorar la seguretat en vehicles intel·ligents, ja siguen de conducció autònoma o manual assistida, és un tema que sempre està en auge a la comunitat robòtica. La present tesi es centra en el disseny d'eines i tècniques de planificació i control de vehicles intel·ligents, per a la millora de la seguretat i el confort.     Designing Omni-Directional Mobile Robot Platform for Research

    Machines, as a key workforce in manufacturing, mining, construction, are essential for industry, and socially. However, existing mobile robots’ designs do not provide enough mobility and maneuverability. This is one of the major factors that requires an improved design of mobile robot platform. This thesis is focused on designing an improved Omni-directional robot platform that has good mobility and maneuverability. To realize these conditions, a lot of criteria and constraints need to be considered in the design process. The conceptual design flows of this mobile robot are to satisfy the need of a mobile robot platform, establish Omni-directional mobile robot specifications followed by concept generation and concept selection. A full decomposition of Omni-directional mobile robot was done. This was followed by building a morphology chart to gather several ideas for those sub-functions of mobile robot. Combination of different types of sub-functions will generate several new Omni-directional mobile robot concepts. The concepts were drafted by using Three-dimensional (3-D) Computer Aided Designing SOLIDWORKS software. After concept generation, the concepts were evaluated by using weighted decision matrix method. The best concept was generated from 3-D design to get 2-D technical drawing and kinematics analysis.
